Before buying, verify the exact reference and configuration, inspect the case and bracelet, review service records, and get the seller’s authentication, return, and warranty terms in writing. If you mean an alternative to the Datejust rather than a Datejust itself, compare fit, features, condition, and dated sold-price evidence—not appearance alone.
First decide what “alternative” means to you
You may be weighing a pre-owned Datejust against another Datejust listing, or looking for a different watch with a similar role: polished, versatile daily wear with a date display. Those are different decisions. Another brand’s watch is not automatically equivalent in status, construction, authentication, or resale behavior.

For either route, start with the individual watch’s condition and documentation. If your priority is brand-backed assurance for a secondhand Rolex, Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) is a separate purchase route with specific eligibility and terms.
Checks to make on any pre-owned Datejust
Confirm the exact reference and configuration
Match the reference in the listing to the watch, then confirm the size, bezel, bracelet, dial, and movement generation. Do not rely on a model name or photographs alone. Bob’s Watches cautions that Datejust II and Datejust 41 listings can be confused: its guide identifies the former with the 116300 series and the latter with the 126300 series. Compare the papers with the watch
Ask to see the warranty card and compare its reference and serial details with the watch and listing. Resolve any mismatch before paying. Matching papers can corroborate a listing, but do not treat a card by itself as proof of authenticity; ask what other authentication evidence the seller provides.
Inspect the case, bracelet, and clasp
Request clear photographs, including close-ups of the case edges, bezel, bracelet, and clasp. Look for softened case edges that may indicate polishing, bracelet stretch, and a clasp that does not operate properly. Separate cosmetic wear from a possible mechanical fault. If condition materially affects your decision, arrange an independent inspection rather than relying on photos.

Ask for service history and an assessment of operation
Request dated service records and ask who performed the work, what was replaced, and what warranty applies now. A brief visual check cannot establish movement condition. If the answers are incomplete or the watch is costly, have a qualified watchmaker assess its timekeeping and functions.

Put the seller’s commitments in writing
Before purchase, confirm the authenticity guarantee, return window, warranty duration and exclusions, and what the seller will do if the watch materially differs from the listing. These protections vary by seller; do not assume one dealer’s policy applies to other dealers or marketplaces. What Rolex Certified Pre-Owned does—and what it does not
Rolex says CPO covers secondhand Rolex watches that are at least two years old and sold through participating Official Retailers. Rolex describes the process as workshop authentication, service, and testing; eligible watches carry the brand’s seal and a guarantee card, and the program provides a two-year international guarantee. Participation is limited to certain authorized points of sale. Check the specific retailer and watch rather than assuming every secondhand Rolex qualifies. Rolex notes an exception for the waterproofness and original precision of some of its oldest models. For an older CPO watch, ask the retailer what performance is guaranteed for that specific piece. The program’s guarantee applies to qualifying CPO purchases, not to secondhand Rolex watches bought elsewhere.

How to compare Datejust alternatives
Compare watches on the wrist and in the condition offered, not just by resemblance. Consider case size and proportions, comfort, style and bracelet, the movement and features you actually need, service history, seller protections, and total price against comparable sold examples. - Define the target: decide whether you want a Datejust specifically, a different Rolex, or another brand’s versatile date watch.
