Before bidding on a vintage Patek Philippe, verify the exact watch and its records, arrange an independent assessment of originality and condition, and calculate your maximum total cost under that sale’s terms. No single serial-number check, archive document, provenance story or catalogue description can settle all of those questions.
1. Confirm the exact watch and reference
Start with the catalogue entry, but do not rely on the model name alone. Match the stated reference and configuration to the watch being offered, and ask the auction specialist for clear photographs and any available details of the movement, case, dial and documents. Compare the lot’s description and images closely; a reference can be offered in configurations that differ in details important to a collector.

Patek Philippe says the movement number is engraved in the movement and the case number is inside the case back. Do not open the watch yourself: the company says a wristwatch or pocket-watch case back should be removed only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center. Ask an authorized professional to open it and check the numbers if they are material to your decision. Patek Philippe’s watch-authenticity FAQ explains where the numbers are found and who should access them.
2. Understand what the paperwork does—and does not—establish
Extract from the Archives
Patek Philippe describes an Extract from the Archives as a partial transcript of its records, maintained since 1839, that records manufacturing information and the date of sale. It is not a complete account of the watch’s subsequent history. Patek Philippe also says photographs are needed to check whether a watch visually complies with its archive description. An Extract therefore does not, by itself, prove that every component now fitted is original or establish the watch’s current condition. See Patek Philippe’s Extract from the Archives FAQ.

Certificate of Origin
The Certificate of Origin is different: it was delivered with a new watch and identifies its movement, case and reference numbers. Patek Philippe says it cannot be re-issued. If the catalogue mentions a Certificate, ask whether it is present and request photographs of the actual document; do not treat an Extract as a replacement for a missing Certificate.
Issued, pending or planned?
Ask the auction house to state plainly whether an Extract has been issued, is pending, or is only planned. A listing for a Calatrava at Christie’s, for example, described a watch with a Certificate of Origin while noting that its Extract had not yet been issued and might not be available by the sale. That is a lot-specific example, not a general rule. If a document is pending, ask what happens if it does not arrive or cannot be issued before bidding. See the Christie’s lot description and terms.

Ordering an Extract
As stated on Patek Philippe’s official ordering page accessed 12 October 2026, the fee is CHF 500 and the Extract is sent within ten weeks after the order is confirmed. The current eligibility rule allows a request for a watch first sold at least ten years earlier, with one request per 12-month period for the same timepiece; the FAQ says the fee is refundable if the watch is ineligible. These service terms can change, so check the official Extract ordering page and FAQ before relying on them. A ten-week estimate may also make a new request impractical for a near-term auction.
3. Get an independent condition and originality assessment
Request the complete condition report, detailed images and available service records. Use them to ask specific questions, not to assume a defect: has the dial been refinished; are the hands or crown replacements; have movement parts been replaced; has the case been polished or lost sharp edges; and what repairs or restoration have been carried out? Ask the specialist to answer in writing where possible.

Catalogue condition language is not a substitute for inspection. Phillips’ Geneva buyer guide says its reports are not exhaustive, its staff are not professional restorers, and an absent report or damage note does not establish good condition, working order or absence of restoration. Christie’s terms for the cited lot similarly say it is sold as-is and that the house does not warrant the authenticity of each component or future operation. Those statements illustrate why the terms and report for the specific sale matter; they are not a universal statement of every auction house’s conditions.
View the watch at a preview when possible. For a significant purchase, Phillips recommends retaining your own restorer or professional adviser to report on condition before bidding. Its Geneva Guide for Prospective Buyers: Watches is effective 12 April 2026. Inspection access, the amount of detail in a report and the availability of a qualified independent assessor should all factor into your decision.

4. Treat provenance as context, not a condition report
Ownership history, exhibition records and published references can add useful context, but they do not establish current condition or originality. Phillips cautions that catalogue provenance, exhibition and literature references may be incomplete and may omit previous owners. Ask for supporting documentation for a persuasive history, and assess it alongside the physical watch and its records—not in place of them. A Sotheby’s bibliography citing Patek Philippe, Wristwatches, Vol. II, 1st Edition (1988), is one example of specialist literature appearing in a catalogue; that citation alone does not establish that the book covers another lot or is currently available. See the Sotheby’s bibliography example.

5. Work out the all-in cost before bidding
Read the current conditions for the specific sale and venue. Account for the buyer’s premium, applicable taxes, payment deadline, shipping, export and import requirements, plus any likely inspection or service costs. A hammer-price estimate is not your total cost.

For scale, the Phillips Geneva buyer guide effective 12 April 2026 lists this tiered buyer’s premium:
| Portion of hammer price | Buyer’s premium rate in the Phillips Geneva guide |
|---|---|
| Through CHF 1,600,000 | 27% |
| Above CHF 1,600,000 through CHF 7,000,000 | 21% on the portion in this band |
| Above CHF 7,000,000 | 14.5% on the portion above this threshold |
The same guide lists Swiss VAT of 8.1% on the hammer price plus premium, subject to its stated export-document conditions. These are terms for Phillips Geneva in that dated guide, not universal auction rates. Use the terms for your own sale to calculate the likely payable amount, then set a maximum hammer bid that leaves room for the taxes, transport and work you may need. The Phillips Geneva guide sets out its conditions.
6. Compare candidate lots against the same checks
When choosing between watches, compare like with like rather than letting one attractive detail dominate. The relevant factors are:

- Originality and condition, including known service or restoration needs.
- Documentation, including whether an Extract is issued or pending.
- Provenance and the records supporting it.
- Access to the watch, detail in the condition report and availability of independent inspection.
- The sale’s terms and your estimated all-in cost.
Weight those factors according to your collecting priorities and intended use. The available primary materials do not establish a suitable market statistic for vintage Patek Philippe values or auction performance, so past results should not be treated here as a forecast of what a future sale will bring.
