If you’ve accidentally won a watch auction, first check whether bidding has ended and which platform hosted it. If the auction is still open, look for the platform’s bid-retraction process immediately. If you have already won, save the listing and transaction details, then promptly ask the seller through the platform to agree to a cancellation. A request is not a guarantee: rules depend on the platform, seller, location and circumstances.
First, confirm what happened
Before taking action, establish whether the auction has actually closed and whether you are the winning bidder. Check the final bid, any buyer fees, shipping charges and the terms presented for the transaction. Note whether the seller is a business or a private individual, since that distinction can affect available options.

Save the listing, bid or win confirmation, checkout terms and relevant messages. Keep communications on the platform so there is a clear record of what you requested and how the seller responded.
If bidding has not ended, check for bid retraction
Some platforms allow bids to be retracted before an auction closes, but only in specified circumstances and within limited time windows. Check the rules for the exact platform and region right away; do not assume that a pre-close retraction route remains available after the auction ends.

For example, eBay UK permits retraction in specified circumstances, including entering the wrong amount, subject to timing limits. Its guidance is specific to that marketplace and is not a universal auction rule: eBay UK’s bid-retraction guidance.
If you have already won, ask the seller to cancel
Send the seller a brief, polite message through the platform as soon as possible. Explain that the win was accidental and ask whether they are willing to cancel the transaction. Be factual; do not invent a reason or claim a right you have not confirmed.
The seller may agree, but the request itself does not require them to do so. eBay describes auction bids as binding commitments and says buyers cannot cancel an order through its standard cancellation route after winning: eBay’s order-cancellation guidance and how bidding works. When to contact platform support
Contact the platform’s help or dispute team if there is a genuine problem with the bid, listing or transaction interface, or if the seller does not respond and the platform offers a relevant route. Provide the saved records and describe what happened accurately. Support may explain the applicable policy, but do not assume it can or will force a cancellation.
Separate buyer’s remorse from a problem with the watch or delivery
Accidentally bidding or changing your mind is different from a watch that never arrives or materially differs from its listing. If there is a delivery, authenticity, damage or description concern, preserve the listing, photographs, tracking details and seller communications, then use the platform’s buyer-protection or dispute process within its deadlines.

Before deciding not to pay, read the rules for the platform and transaction. The consequences can include account or bidding restrictions, and the platform’s terms may treat a winning bid as a commitment. Catawiki says unpaid winners are blocked from bidding again. eBay says auction bids are binding. These are platform-policy examples, not a conclusion about legal liability in every country or auction.

Whether a seller or platform can pursue further remedies depends on the applicable agreement and local law. If the amount is significant or you have received a formal demand, seek advice relevant to your jurisdiction rather than relying on another platform’s policy page.
Check whether a consumer cancellation right applies
Some transactions may qualify for consumer withdrawal rights, but this is not a general right to cancel every auction win. Catawiki describes a conditional route for eligible consumers in the EEA or UK buying from professional sellers: a request must be made within 14 calendar days after delivery, and exclusions and other conditions apply. That example does not establish the rules for private sellers, buyers outside the EEA or UK, or other platforms. The actual answer depends on your location, the seller’s status, the auction’s terms and the reason you want to cancel.
