A return is not guaranteed: the answer depends on where you live, how and from whom you bought it, when it arrived, the watch’s condition, and whether you simply changed your mind or found a fault.
Can you return a watch just because you changed your mind?
Sometimes—but there is no universal cooling-off period for watch purchases. Separate three possible routes: a legal right to cancel, the seller’s voluntary return policy, and legal remedies for a faulty or misdescribed watch. The rules differ by jurisdiction and sales channel, and a private sale may be treated differently from a purchase from a business.

Before relying on a deadline, establish your country or state, the seller’s location and type, the purchase channel, the delivery date, and the terms that applied when you bought the watch. The following are representative rules, not a determination of rights for an unidentified transaction.

What to do first
1. Preserve the watch and its paperwork
Stop wearing it while you check the terms. Keep the box, tags, bracelet links, papers, manuals, warranty card, invoice, and shipping materials together, and photograph the watch and packaging. Avoid polishing, resizing, modifying, or arranging paid service until you know whether those steps affect eligibility. Ask the seller specifically whether trying it on, removing tags, or adjusting the bracelet changes its policy; condition requirements are seller-specific.

2. Gather the transaction details
Write down the purchase and delivery dates, your location, the seller’s name and address, whether you bought online, by phone, or in a shop, and whether the seller was a business or a private individual. Note whether the watch was new or pre-owned, how you paid or financed it, and whether there is a fault or mismatch. Save the listing, receipt, order confirmation, applicable terms, and all messages.
3. Contact the seller in writing now
Ask for the applicable deadline, required condition, return authorization, shipping instructions, refund method and timing, and any deduction or restocking charge. Request the answer in writing. If the watch is faulty or not as described, identify the specific problem and attach clear photos or other evidence; do not describe a defect claim as mere buyer’s remorse.
4. Choose the right route
Keep the legal cancellation question, the retailer’s policy, and fault-related remedies distinct. A retailer may offer more than the law requires, while statutory rights may apply even if the seller’s policy is narrower. If the seller refuses a potentially covered claim, consult the consumer-protection or dispute-resolution body in your jurisdiction.
How the rules differ by location
United States: the FTC Cooling-Off Rule
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule applies to certain sales made at a buyer’s home or another qualifying temporary, off-premises location. For a covered sale, cancellation is generally due by midnight of the third business day after the sale. The seller must provide cancellation information and forms; use the stated method and keep proof that you sent notice. The FTC says a covered seller generally has 10 days after cancellation to refund money and handle specified obligations. See the FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule guidance.

The rule does not cover purchases made entirely online, by mail, or by telephone. It also excludes sales completed after negotiation at a seller’s permanent place of business and other listed categories. State law may provide additional rights, so check the rules that apply where you live.
European Union
For an eligible distance purchase from a trader, consumers generally have 14 days after receiving the goods to withdraw without giving a reason. This is not an EU-wide right to return an in-store purchase simply because you changed your mind. A shop can offer its own change-of-mind returns, and purchases from private individuals are generally outside EU consumer rules. Check the exceptions and conditions in Your Europe’s guidance on returns and cancellations.
Faulty or misdescribed goods follow a separate path: the seller must provide an appropriate remedy, commonly repair or replacement first, with a price reduction or refund possible in specified circumstances. A minimum legal guarantee generally applies to goods bought from traders, including second-hand goods, subject to national rules and exceptions.

United Kingdom
For an eligible online, mail, or phone purchase, GOV.UK says you can notify the seller of cancellation within 14 days of receiving the item, then have another 14 days to return it. The seller generally refunds within 14 days after receiving the watch back. You may handle it as you could in a shop, but a deduction may be possible if it has been used or damaged. For an in-person purchase, a seller generally does not have to refund a watch simply because you no longer want it. Faults and misdescription are separate. New Zealand
A change of mind does not automatically entitle a buyer to a refund or exchange. A retailer may allow a return under its own terms. Ask the retailer and keep proof of purchase, such as the receipt, bank statement, or packaging. See New Zealand Consumer Protection’s change-of-mind guidance.

Do not let a return-policy discussion obscure a possible legal claim about the watch itself. Describe the fault or discrepancy precisely, when you noticed it, and how it differs from the listing or sales description. Preserve the listing and communications, take photos or video where useful, and contact the seller promptly in writing. The remedy and order of remedies depend on local law and the transaction; EU and UK guidance, for example, treats faults separately from a buyer changing their mind.
If a return is unavailable, compare your exit options
Ask the original seller about an exchange or store credit before committing to a resale route. If you consider a trade-in, dealer buyout, or private sale, obtain written offers for the exact reference and condition where practical. There is no defensible resale percentage that applies across watch brands, models, conditions, and sale channels; do not assume the retail price predicts what you will receive.

For every route, compare the net amount after fees, insurance, shipping, inspection, and any service costs; the certainty and speed of completion; condition and authentication requirements; payment protections; and any effects on warranty, financing, or other contractual obligations. A trade-in program can be narrow: TAG Heuer’s UK Connected trade-in terms concern an eligible current Connected watch traded toward a new Connected watch. They do not establish a general cash buyback for luxury watches.
Return conditions depend on the seller
Do not treat one brand’s policy as a general rule. As a specific example, Casio’s US online-store FAQ describes a 30-day money-back guarantee for purchases from its listed official online stores and requires the watch to be new, unworn, undamaged, unmodified, and returned with original packaging and materials; it recommends insured shipping. Check the current terms for the exact store and order in Casio’s US returns FAQ. Those are Casio policy terms, not universal legal requirements or conditions imposed by every watch seller.
