On eBay.com, a watch that arrived faulty and was not clearly described as faulty may qualify for a return even if the seller says they do not accept returns. Keep the watch unopened and unaltered while you decide whether to use that remedy.
Document the watch and compare it with the listing
Before winding, setting, opening, or repairing the watch, create a clear record of what arrived and what it does. Photograph the watch from several angles, its packaging, and any visible shipping damage. Save a copy of the listing’s description and condition, along with relevant seller messages; keep communication in eBay.

Describe the behavior without guessing at its cause. For example, note whether the watch does not move at all, runs intermittently, or has a function that does not work. Then compare that behavior with the seller’s wording. A watch described as working is different from one explicitly listed as not working, for parts, or with the same fault disclosed.

Check the return route and deadline in your order
For purchases on eBay.com, eBay’s Money Back Guarantee policy says sellers must deliver an item as described. A broken, damaged, or faulty item that was not clearly described that way may be returned for a refund even when the seller does not offer returns. The policy gives a latest request window of 30 calendar days after estimated or actual delivery, or the seller’s stated return window, whichever is longer; it says the seller must respond within three business days. See eBay’s Money Back Guarantee policy and follow the deadline and instructions shown for your transaction.

These terms are for eBay.com, not a guarantee that the same rules apply on every eBay site. The site used at checkout determines the applicable buyer-protection policy, and eligibility depends on the transaction. Start or review the return through the order rather than relying on a seller’s general “no returns” statement.
If the watch went through Authenticity Guarantee
Vintage watches may qualify for eBay Authenticity Guarantee if they meet the program criteria, but authentication alone does not promise a refund. eBay describes return restrictions for authenticated items: returns depend on the seller’s return window, and its coverage explanation identifies damaged-on-arrival and seller-failure situations. Check the listing and the order’s return process for the specific purchase. See eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee information for watches.
Keep the watch unchanged while a return is unresolved
Do not open the case, replace parts, or arrange repair while you are pursuing a return. Altering the watch can change the evidence and complicate the dispute. Follow the shipping instructions in the order if eBay or the seller requests a return; eBay’s policy says the seller is responsible for return shipping when an item is being returned.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Only try a basic check that fits the movement
“Not working” does not identify whether the watch is mechanical or quartz, what movement it contains, or what has failed. Avoid a universal fix. Do not force a stiff crown or open the case based on generic advice.
For a mechanical watch
A stopped mechanical watch may have an unwound mainspring, but winding instructions depend on the movement. Seiko’s guidance for its 4R35/4R36 family says to wind a stopped watch and set the time, then consult the retailer if it still does not operate. A separate Seiko instruction for a particular mechanical family says to turn the crown 20 times by hand when starting from stopped. These are model-specific examples, not instructions for an unidentified vintage watch. See the Seiko 4R35/4R36 troubleshooting instructions and Seiko’s mechanical-watch characteristics guidance.
For a quartz watch or a suspected magnetic influence
Quartz watches have different possible causes of failure, and the available manufacturer guidance does not diagnose this particular watch. Seiko notes that magnetism can affect operation: an analog quartz watch may stop or keep incorrect time, while a mechanical watch may gain or lose time. That makes magnetism one possibility, not a diagnosis based on a stopped watch. If you suspect it, Seiko advises contacting an authorized service center for demagnetization. See Seiko’s guidance on magnetism and watches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose between returning the watch and keeping it for diagnosis
If the listing disclosed the fault, or you decide to keep the watch after resolving the marketplace issue, a qualified watchmaker or the brand’s service center can assess it. Compare the return eligibility and deadline with the diagnosis and repair cost a professional quotes, the refund amount, and how much you want this particular watch. No repair price can be assumed without examining the watch, and no cause can be established from the symptom alone.
