Pequignet says the Calibre Royal made it a French watch manufacture when it launched in 2011 after four years of development. The company’s “first” claim is specific: it calls the Royal its first high-precision movement made in France and the first French-made mechanism to integrate its watchmaking complications on a single mainplate—not the first French watch movement ever.
What was Pequignet’s first in-house watch movement?
It was the Calibre Royal, an automatic movement that Pequignet says it designed, prototyped, assembled and controlled in-house. According to the company’s official history, the movement launched in 2011 after four years of development. Pequignet dates the company’s founding to 1973 in Morteau, its acquisition by Didier Leibundgut to 2004, and the establishment of its Fine Watchmaking Laboratory to 2008.

The Royal’s significance is architectural as well as geographic. Pequignet describes it as the first French-made mechanism to integrate its watchmaking complications on one mainplate. That is the useful boundary for the “first” claim: it is the company’s formulation about a particular movement and design feature, not evidence that no French watch movement existed before it.
How the Calibre Royal is built and works
Pequignet’s technical page gives the automatic Calibre Royal a diameter of 31 mm and a thickness of 5.8 mm. The company lists 318 components, 279 industrial plans and 150 tools used in its development, and eight international patent filings for this calibre. Pequignet does not date those individual counts on the page.

- Regulation: The balance is described as high-inertia and runs at 3 Hz.
- Calendar: The large date and day displays jump instantaneously on the same axis. Pequignet says they can be set at any time because the movement has no “red zone.”
These are Pequignet’s published specifications, not the results of independent testing. The collection page gives an adjustment tolerance of −4 to +6 seconds per day and an average of −2 to +2 seconds per day; the reviewed sources do not establish independent verification or an external chronometer certification.
What “made in France” means for this movement
Pequignet places design and assembly work in Morteau, and says the Royal’s movement parts are assembled by hand there. The company states that components are sourced within 80 km of its manufacture. Franceclat’s 2026 French Initiatives press release likewise describes the Calibre Royal as designed, developed and produced in Morteau, with components sourced less than 80 km away.

Those statements support a locally rooted design, production and assembly story. They do not establish that every material or every manufacturing process is exclusively French. Pequignet also says it received the French Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label in 2014, with renewals in 2019 and 2025.
Which watches use the Calibre Royal?
The Royal is used across several families in Pequignet’s Royale collection, including Royale Paris, Royale Origine, Royale GMT/Manuelle, Royale Titane and Grand Sport. The automatic Royal and manual-winding Royal are distinct variants, so check the movement named for a specific watch rather than assuming every Royal-family model has the same configuration.

For a current, named example, Pequignet’s Watches and Wonders 2026 page identifies Royale Paris Gold models in 39.5 mm with the Calibre Royal. It also features watches powered by other movements. The available source information does not establish current prices or stock for individual references; confirm those details with the current listing or an authorized retailer.
When comparing Royal-equipped models, the useful distinctions are case diameter and material, automatic or manual movement, complications, reserve, and dial and case design. The collection pages establish families and movement associations, but not a verified price comparison or service-support comparison.

Because the company’s pages may count variants differently, those labels should not be combined into a single definitive movement tally. Franceclat’s 2026 profile also refers to four calibres and ten patents across Pequignet’s movement program; that brand-wide count is separate from Pequignet’s claim of eight patent filings for the Calibre Royal.
