Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA minute repeater is a mechanical complication that sounds the time on demand: the hours, the quarters and the minutes elapsed since the last quarter, each announced by a distinct tone. Before buying one, judge three things about the specific watch rather than the category: how it sounds when you hear it, whether its exact reference is rated for moisture, and whether the maker’s documented service route will reach it. Specifications alone do not settle any of these.
How a minute repeater tells the time
A minute repeater does not chime automatically. It strikes only when the wearer activates it, usually with a slide or pusher on the case. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes small hammers striking gongs, with different sounds marking hours, quarters and exact minutes (Jaeger-LeCoultre, “Minute Repeater Caliber”). Patek Philippe describes the same logic in its own terms: a low tone for each hour, a double high-low tone for each quarter, and high tones for the minutes elapsed since the last quarter (Patek Philippe, “The Patek Philippe Sound”).
Patek Philippe’s worked example at 12:59 shows how the sequence adds up. The count is a useful way to follow what you hear, but it describes the sequence, not how well a watch sounds.
| Strike group | Tone pattern | Strikes at 12:59 |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | Low tone per hour | 12 |
| Quarters | Double high-low tone per quarter (three quarters past the hour) | 6 |
| Minutes since last quarter | High tone per minute (59 minus 45) | 14 |
| Total | Sequence as described in Patek Philippe’s example | 32 |
Because the count is set by the time shown, you can test any watch you handle: pick a time, activate the repeater and check that the number of groups you hear matches what the maker describes.

Listen to the individual watch
Sound is the part of a minute repeater that no catalogue can convey, and it varies between examples. Patek Philippe states that its minute repeaters are tested before delivery: “Every single minute repeater timepiece produced goes through a final sound test by Thierry Stern himself.” That is the manufacturer’s account of its own practice, and it describes each watch as having its own sound. It is not an independent measure of sound quality.
When you can, listen to the exact watch in person and assess it on a short checklist:
Rank #2
- COSC Certified Chronometer
- Case Size: 39.00 mm, Band Width: 20 mm, Case Thickness: 10.98 mm
- Automatic movement, 316L solid stainless steel bracelet, Roman dial type, Date
- Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft): suitable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but no diving or snorkeling.
- Clarity: each tone is distinct and does not blur into the next.
- Separation: the hour, quarter and minute groups are easy to tell apart.
- Completeness: the full sequence plays through at different times, including at a quarter and at a time with many minute strikes.
- Consistency: repeated activations sound the same, without stuttering or a missing strike.
No single pitch, loudness or tempo is established as the best. Sound preference is personal, and no standardized cross-brand score for minute repeaters is published, so do not rank watches on a sound claim you cannot test yourself.
Operating and handling the repeater
Follow the manual for the exact reference. The Patek Philippe 5078R owner instructions give this sequence, which is a useful model for other repeaters but applies only to that reference (Patek Philippe, 5078R instructions):

- Case Type: Angular stainless steel case with octagonal bezel - See-through case back|screw-down crown
- Case Size: 40mm - Band Width: Stainless steel bracelet tapers from 24mm to 20mm - Case Thickness: 9.9mm
- The Octagonal bezel is emphasised by a horizontal relief stamped dial while white Super-LumiNova enhances the visibility of the indexes.Covered by a Sapphire crystal with double sided anti-reflection treatment for clear visibility.
- Activate the repeater and let the strike sequence finish completely before you do anything else with the watch.
- Do not operate the winding crown while the repeater is working.
- Wait 30 seconds after the sequence ends before you touch the winding crown. The manual warns that winding during or immediately after a strike could damage the mechanism.
- Do not reactivate the repeater until the previous sequence has finished.
Ask the seller to demonstrate these steps. A watch that is handled roughly during a demonstration, or that is wound while still striking, is a warning sign about how it has been used.
Water resistance: check the reference, not the category
A water-resistant crown or a water rating on another repeater model does not tell you whether the watch you are considering resists moisture. The two examples below show how much the answer can differ between makers and references. Neither should be read as a rule for the whole complication.

| Reference | Stated water protection | Source and what it says |
|---|---|---|
| Patek Philippe 5078R | Manual warns against moisture; no depth rating stated in the cited passage | The owner instructions say that although the watch has a water-resistant crown, it is “not protected at all against the ingress of moisture because of the slot for the minute repeater slide” (Patek Philippe 5078R instructions). |
| A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange Minute Repeater | Water resistant to 2 bar (20 metres) | Stated on the maker’s product page (A. Lange & Söhne, Richard Lange Minute Repeater). The page does not give a publication date. |
Before buying, obtain the official specification and the manual for the exact reference. Keep in mind that a rating describes a new watch in its original condition; seals and gaskets age, and a watch that has been opened or serviced may no longer match its original rating. Ask for proof of the most recent service and whether it included seal replacement.

Service access is a purchase question, not an afterthought. For the Patek Philippe 5078R, the manufacturer recommends servicing at least every three to five years and directs owners to an authorized retailer, which routes the watch to its manufacture in Geneva (Patek Philippe 5078R instructions). That interval is the maker’s recommendation for that reference, not a schedule that applies to every minute repeater.

Before you commit, confirm:
- Which authorized service route applies to this specific watch and whether it is still active.
- Whether the seller has the manual, original papers and any service records.
- When the watch was last serviced and what work was done, including the repeater mechanism and seals.
- Whether the maker still supports the reference, since production status affects how easily parts and service are available.
Comparable service costs and intervals across brands are not established here, and nothing in the official material compares them. Ask each maker for its own figures rather than assuming they match.
Comparing references
Use real references to compare, and treat any two examples as illustrations rather than a ranking. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s minute repeater watches page shows the maker’s current offering, and IWC Schaffhausen also publishes its own minute repeater complication page. A. Lange & Söhne describes the Richard Lange Minute Repeater as a 50-piece limited edition in 950 platinum, with the 2 bar rating noted above and a feature the maker describes as eliminating pauses in the strike.
For any pair of watches, compare:
- The sound of the particular watch and how its sequence is arranged.
- Case material and dimensions, movement architecture and any additional complications.
- The water rating and the maker’s operating instructions for that reference.
- Production status and availability, verified directly with the maker or an authorized dealer, because listings change.
- Service interval, authorized route, documentation and the watch’s own service history.
Current prices, pre-owned authentication procedures and repair costs are not covered by the official material cited here. Verify these with the seller, the maker or an independent specialist before relying on any figure.
For the complication itself, the most reliable starting points are the manufacturers’ own pages cited above, and the most reliable test of any particular watch is hearing it run and reading its paperwork.
