A flying tourbillon is a rotating cage that holds the escapement and balance wheel, supported from below rather than held top and bottom. Removing the upper bridge makes the cage look suspended and gives an unobstructed view of the regulating parts. The original tourbillon was designed to reduce gravity-related rate variation in a vertically held pocket watch. It does not guarantee better accuracy in every wrist position, and the design’s appeal is mainly visual and constructional.
What a tourbillon is actually rotating
A mechanical watch regulates its timekeeping through the balance wheel and the escapement, the part that releases energy from the mainspring in measured steps. Breguet describes the tourbillon principle as “placing the escapement and the balance wheel in a mobile cage” (Breguet, “The Tourbillon”). The whole cage turns around an axis, so the regulating parts pass through every orientation over the course of each rotation.
Breguet dates the invention of the tourbillon to 1801 (Breguet). That date refers to the conventional design. The flying variant came later and is a separate construction question, covered below.
Why the tourbillon was invented
The tourbillon was devised to reduce the effect of gravity on rate variation when a watch is held in a vertical position, particularly in pocket watches (Audemars Piguet, “Ever Greater Precision”). Pocket watches spent long periods in a fixed orientation, so a rate error that depended on position mattered in daily use. A rotating cage averages out part of that error.

- This tourbillon designed by Swiss designer Etienne Ruffieux with modern architectural aesthetics, features a lightweight, comfortable, free-sprung balance flying tourbillon. It houses an independently developed architectural tourbillon movement adorned with oversized ruby bearings. The design aesthetic is expressed through the interplay of light and shadow created by its extreme skeletonization. The watch has been honored with the IAI Global Design Award for its outstanding original design.
- Independently developed CAL9001 free-sprung balance flying tourbillon movement, manual winding, 28,880 vibrations per hour, 25 ruby bearings. Features high-end finishing including satin brushing and beveled edges, engraved brand logo with gold-stamped. Dual mainspring series technology delivers 80-hour power reserve (twice that of standard tourbillon movements). This technology ensures more uniform and gradual mainspring release, resulting in enhanced timekeeping precision and stability.
- The CAL9001 tourbillon movement features the exclusive free-sprung micro-adjustment technology typically reserved for luxury timepieces. This free-sprung system eliminates the need for a balance spring regulator, thereby overcoming the timing inaccuracies caused by regulator displacement in conventional mechanical movements. This ensures the watch delivers enhanced precision and stability in timekeeping.
- This tourbillon measures 40mm in diameter and just 9.7mm in thickness, weighing a mere 67 grams. Its meticulously engineered structure and radically skeletonized tourbillon movement eliminate all superfluous metal components, allowing the mechanical artistry of the free-sprung flying tourbillon to shine in its purest form. It is an exquisite, high-end tourbillon watch that is both ultra-thin and supremely comfortable.
- The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters, featuring a double-sided sapphire crystal and an Italian leather strap with hand-stitched detailing for comfortable and durable wear. We offer a three-year worldwide warranty.
That origin defines the limit of the claim. A single-axis tourbillon does not cancel gravity in every position, and it does not make every wristwatch more accurate. Gravity does not disappear; the cage changes how the error is distributed over time. Accuracy depends on the whole movement, including its regulation and finishing, not on the tourbillon alone.
How the flying version differs
In a conventional tourbillon, the cage’s arbor is held between the mainplate and a bridge, or sometimes between two bridges. In a flying tourbillon, the cage is supported from one side, usually below, with no top bridge. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the contrast directly: the classic tourbillon is fixed at a top and bottom point, while the flying tourbillon “is only supported by an attachment point, usually at the base, lending it the impression of floating in space” (Jaeger-LeCoultre, “Flying tourbillon watches”). That statement is a manufacturer description, not a quotation from a named person.

The term “flying” therefore describes what the viewer sees. The rotating assembly is visible from above, and the support appears to stop short of the cage. The mechanical function of the cage is the same as in a conventional tourbillon.
Side-by-side comparison

Why the open cage needs more precision
A bridge gives a rotating cage two anchor points. Remove the top anchor and the cage must hold its geometry from the base alone. Any play, deflection or imbalance in the cantilevered arrangement is harder to control. That is why manufacturers describe the flying construction as demanding additional precision in production, not as a shortcut.

The open view has a cost in this sense: the assembly that gives the design its look is also the assembly that must be finished and balanced with the most care. The sources collected here describe this trade-off qualitatively. They do not give a figure for the added manufacturing time or tolerance, so none should be assumed.

The attribution is easy to blur, so it helps to separate the milestones. Alfred Helwig is associated with the earlier flying construction. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie credits Vincent Calabrese with building the first flying tourbillon wristwatch in 1985 (Fondation Haute Horlogerie, “Flying Tourbillon: An Ingenious Timepiece Design”). IWC Schaffhausen’s account of the flying tourbillon covers the same lineage (IWC Schaffhausen, “The ‘Flying’ Tourbillon — where time flies”).

Audemars Piguet dates the release of its self-winding tourbillon wristwatch to 1986. That is the brand’s own stated milestone in the development of wristwatch tourbillons. It is not a claim that the company made the first flying tourbillon wristwatch (Audemars Piguet).
What the design does not guarantee
- It does not eliminate gravity. The cage averages position-dependent error; it does not remove it.
- It does not make a wristwatch categorically more accurate. The sources do not establish a universal accuracy advantage for flying examples.
- It does not establish a durability advantage. Structural differences exist, but the cited sources do not state that one construction lasts longer.
- It is not a measure of quality on its own. The finishing, regulation and balancing of the movement carry as much weight.
How to evaluate a flying tourbillon watch
When you compare examples, check these points in the manufacturer’s own documentation rather than relying on the visual impression:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Whether the cage is described as supported from below with no top bridge, or as bridged at both ends.
- Which movement features and construction details the manufacturer states for the specific caliber.
- Whether any performance claim names a certification, test method or measured result. A claim without these is an impression, not evidence.
- Whether the description addresses the orientation for which the tourbillon was designed, and whether it discusses wrist use separately.
Used this way, the flying tourbillon is best understood as a demonstration of mechanical construction and finishing. Its visual openness is real and distinctive. Its accuracy and durability claims need the same proof as any other mechanical watch.
