A minute repeater that stays silent usually has a cause the manufacturer has already documented, and the first step is the owner’s manual for that exact reference. The checks below are drawn from two official manuals, Credor’s BG7R11S and Patek Philippe’s 5078R. They show how much the controls differ between calibers, so treat them as examples of what to look for, not as a universal list. Only carry out a check that your own manual permits. If it does not solve the problem, stop and send the watch to an authorized service channel.
How a minute repeater should sound
A minute repeater is an on-demand complication. When activated, it reports the time with tones instead of showing it only on the dial. IWC describes the conventional sequence in its minute repeater explanation, and Patek Philippe covers its own strike system in its sound overview. In the conventional pattern:
- Hours: one low-pitched gong for each elapsed hour.
- Quarters: paired strikes for each elapsed quarter hour.
- Minutes: high-pitched strikes for the minutes since the last quarter.
Some watches use special strike systems or safety mechanisms, so an unfamiliar pattern is not automatically a fault. Patek Philippe’s overview gives a useful worked example, which is a count and not a failure statistic. Its year of publication is not stated on the current overview.
| Time shown | Hour strikes | Quarter strikes | Minute strikes | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12:59 | 12 | 6 (three quarters, two strikes each) | 14 | 32 |
If the sound you hear does not follow this logic at all, or simply stops partway through, the problem is more likely mechanical than a matter of timing.

Start with the manual for your exact reference
Repeater controls, winding requirements and activation steps differ by caliber and by brand. The two manuals below illustrate this. The table compares only what each manual states, and “not stated” means the cited excerpt does not give that point.
| Point | Credor BG7R11S (English instruction manual) | Patek Philippe 5078R (instructions) |
|---|---|---|
| Winding guidance | Lists an unwound or nearly unwound mainspring as a reason the repeater may not chime; recommends activating it when fully wound. | Not stated in the cited excerpt. |
| Crown position | A crown at the first click activates a safety device that prevents chiming; the crown should be returned to the normal position. | Warns against turning or pulling the crown while the repeater works and for 30 seconds afterward. |
| Activation | Activate using the button at 8 o’clock, after the crown is returned to normal. | Push the slide to its end stop, release it fully, and let the full strike sequence finish. |
| Timing mismatch | The chime may differ from the hands by about one minute; for an error of a few minutes, consult the retailer. | After a long unwound period, oil may thicken and the repeater may temporarily give the wrong time; after rewinding, it should work correctly within one or two hours. |
| Service route | Retailer or Seiko Customer Service Center for faults beyond the listed remedies. | Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer for minute repeater service. |
Neither layout applies to every repeater. A button at another position, a different slide or a different winding rule would mean a different manual governs your watch.

Owner-safe checks
Only carry out these checks when the manual for your exact reference allows them. The examples below come from the Credor and Patek manuals.
Winding state (Credor BG7R11S)
Credor’s troubleshooting table lists an unwound or nearly unwound mainspring as a reason the repeater may not chime. Its remedy is to wind the mainsprings and to activate the repeater when it is fully wound. The same table associates long intervals between strikes with low mainspring power. These are Credor’s instructions for the BG7R11S. Other calibers may behave differently, so check the winding guidance in your own manual before applying this step. The Credor manual is available as an English PDF.

Crown position (Credor BG7R11S)
According to the same manual, a crown left at its first click engages a safety device that prevents the repeater from chiming. The table’s remedy is to push the crown to its normal position and then activate the repeater with the button at 8 o’clock. Its table reads: “The minute repeater does not chime.” Many repeaters have no equivalent crown position, so do not look for this in a watch whose manual does not describe it.
Operating sequence (Patek Philippe 5078R)
The Patek 5078R instructions describe a sequence you should follow exactly:

- Push the slide all the way to its end stop.
- Release the slide completely.
- Let the full strike sequence finish without interruption.
- Do not turn or pull the crown while the repeater is working, or during the 30 seconds that follow. The manual warns that disregarding this may damage the mechanism.
The same manual notes that the slide slot leaves the watch unprotected against moisture ingress. Keep that in mind if the watch has been exposed to water or humidity.
A small mismatch between hands and chimes
Credor states that the chime may differ from the hands by about one minute. Patek’s 5078R manual says that after an extended unwound period, oil may thicken and the repeater may temporarily announce the wrong time, and that after rewinding it should function correctly within one or two hours. These notes explain a limited, temporary variance. They do not establish that a persistent, unusual or incomplete sequence is harmless. If the mismatch grows or continues after the period described in your manual, move on to service.

When to stop and arrange service
Stop troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or an authorized retailer when any of the following applies:
- The permitted winding and control-position checks do not restore chiming.
- The chime is incomplete, abnormal, or differs from the hands by more than a few minutes.
- The watch has suffered an impact or moisture exposure.
- The cause is not described in your model’s manual.
Do not open the case or attempt any internal adjustment. For Credor watches, the manual directs owners to the retailer where the watch was purchased or to the Seiko Customer Service Center. For Patek Philippe minute repeaters, the 5078R manual directs owners to an Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer. Manufacturers’ service schedules and procedures differ by model, so ask the authorized service channel what it requires for your reference.
Manufacturer manuals do not publish how often minute repeaters stop chiming, so this guide cannot estimate how likely a fault is. Its purpose is to help you separate a documented, owner-correctable condition from a fault that needs an authorized inspection.
Before sending the watch out, write down what you observed: the time shown, the number of strikes, whether the sequence stopped early, and the steps you already tried. That record helps the service technician start from the right point.
