Before bidding on a Rolex, verify the specific watch, inspect its condition as far as possible, read the sale terms and set a limit based on the full cost—not just the hammer price. A catalogue listing, box, papers or seller’s reputation does not by itself prove authenticity, and an auction purchase should not be assumed to include a Rolex guarantee.
Can you confirm a Rolex is authentic from an auction listing?
No. Rolex says, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” Treat a catalogue entry and accompanying documents as information to check, not as Rolex certification. A serial number, box, papers, seller reputation or close visual inspection alone does not establish that a watch is genuine.

Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programme is distinct from an ordinary auction listing. Rolex says CPO watches are at least two years old, checked and serviced in Rolex workshops, and sold through participating Official Rolex Retailers. The programme checks each watch’s original configuration and tests it; qualifying CPO watches come with a two-year international guarantee. Rolex notes that waterproofness and original precision are exceptions for some of the oldest watches. A catalogue description should not be represented as CPO certification.
Rolex states that new, genuine watches are sold exclusively by Official Rolex Jewelers. Its published new-watch guarantee has eligibility and documentation conditions, including a fully completed guarantee card. Those terms do not establish that an auction watch is covered. Check the sale terms for any warranty actually offered. Rolex’s certification explanation, CPO programme details, Rolex purchasing guidance and Rolex guarantee terms describe the distinctions.

What should you inspect before bidding?
Start with the complete lot description and condition report, then ask questions about the particular watch. A report is useful, but it cannot guarantee that every issue has been disclosed.
- Ask about the case and bracelet condition, including polishing or refinishing.
- Clarify whether the dial, hands or other components have been replaced, and whether the watch remains in its original configuration.
- Ask whether the movement runs and whether service records are available. A running watch is not, by itself, proof of authenticity or a clean bill of health.
- Confirm exactly what is included: papers, box, bracelet links and other accessories or documentation.
- Request details of any known faults, restoration, service work or limitations noted by the auction house.
Whenever feasible, see the actual watch at a preview and arrange for a qualified watchmaker to inspect it. Phillips’ April 2025 Geneva buyer guide encourages pre-sale inspection and recommends professional advice for significant lots; Sotheby’s also advises inspection by a qualified watchmaker. A loupe may help you look at visible details, but it cannot authenticate a watch or reveal its internal condition. Phillips’ Geneva buyer guide and Sotheby’s watch buyer notices explain their inspection guidance.

How much should you budget beyond the hammer price?
The hammer price is not necessarily the amount you pay. Calculate a ceiling that includes the buyer’s premium and any other applicable auction charges, taxes, shipping, insurance and import costs. Add any inspection or service expense a qualified professional identifies. Charges depend on the sale, lot, buyer’s location and delivery destination, so check the current terms before bidding.
For context—not as a universal rate—Christie’s financial information states that its collecting-category premium schedule effective 1 September 2026 is 28% on the hammer-price portion up to US$2,000,000, 22% on the portion above that through US$8,000,000, and 15% on the portion above US$8,000,000, before applicable local sales taxes. Christie’s lists exceptions and adjusted thresholds for other currencies. This is a published schedule example; use the applicable sale’s current terms to calculate your own total. Christie’s financial information and Sotheby’s explanation of buyer’s premiums describe how charges can vary.

Those historical Geneva rates are not a current default for other sales. See the guide’s buyer information, and check the terms for the auction you are considering.

Read the current Conditions of Sale and any notices specific to the lot before bidding. Confirm the payment deadline, buyer’s premium and other charges, collection or shipping arrangements, and what remedies—if any—apply if a material issue arises. Do not assume you have a return right or that catalogue photographs show every condition issue.

Likewise, do not assume Rolex’s published five-year international guarantee transfers with an auction lot. Rolex’s guarantee has stated eligibility and documentation conditions, and the CPO programme’s two-year international guarantee applies to CPO watches bought through participating Official Rolex Retailers. For a normal auction lot, rely only on a warranty explicitly stated in the sale terms or provided by the seller, and check its scope and conditions.
