How do you measure a watch strap for your watch?
Check the width at both ends of the strap. The Jean Rousseau product page distinguishes the width at the case, between the lugs, from the width at the buckle. Its two-millimeter difference is an example, not a standard that applies to every watch.
- Measure the lug width. Measure the space between the watch’s lugs where the strap attaches.
- Measure the buckle width. If you intend to keep your watch’s original buckle, measure the strap width where it meets the buckle and provide both widths in your bespoke request.
- Choose the buckle approach. The company says that if you select a Jean Rousseau buckle, the lug-width measurement is the one needed for that choice.
- Record both strap lengths. The strap consists of a short part and a long part. Give the atelier your preferred or existing short- and long-side lengths, and ask for guidance if you are unsure what will fit.
The product page gives standard size examples, but they should be treated as context rather than a promise of fit for your wrist or watch. Bring the watch or accurate measurements to a consultation where possible, particularly if you are retaining its original buckle.

How long does a bespoke watch strap take?
Maison Jean Rousseau said in an article published November 7, 2024, that making a custom strap involves about twenty production steps over one to two days of work. The company describes stages including material selection and preparation, cutting, hole-punching, assembly, hand-stitching and quality control. It also says skins are inspected and tested in a laboratory certified by CTC Lyon. These are the maker’s statements; no independent audit report is cited in that account.
