The change is more than cosmetic: the announced system also updates the coaches’ challenge signal, operator interface, monitoring and maintenance design. It does not change basketball’s shot-clock rules.
What changed in the Tissot shot clock?
Tissot and the NBA announced the redesigned clock on January 23, 2025, as part of a multiyear extension of Tissot’s partnerships with the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League. Their partnership began in 2015. The reveal came ahead of the NBA Paris Games 2025. The announcement describes a refresh to arena timing equipment, not a change to how the game is timed or officiated. NBA Communications’ announcement provides the specifications and planned rollout.
| Feature | Previous system | Redesigned system |
|---|---|---|
| Housing and display | Rectangular housing; digits with the same size and colors as the redesigned version, according to the announcement. | Round profile inspired by Tissot’s watchmaking heritage; digits retain their size and colors for visual continuity. |
| Lighting and signal | Standard red and amber lighting capability. | Full RGB LED strips can illuminate in any color; a green coaches’ challenge signal is integrated into the system. |
| Operator controls and distribution | Prior operator interface and signaling distribution system. | Improved user interface and modernized signaling distribution, intended to streamline operation and support additional functionality and monitoring. |
| Frame and servicing | Prior frame and service design; comparative weight and maintenance details are not stated in the announcement. | Aluminum frame described by the announcement as 20% lighter; modular construction is intended to simplify on-site maintenance, hardware replacement and future upgrades. |
The 20% figure is the specification published by Tissot and the NBA in January 2025, not an independently verified measurement. The announcement does not provide a complete engineering specification or measured performance results.
What the circular design means for fans
The round silhouette is the most noticeable visual departure. Yet the digits themselves are not presented as a new design: the announcement says they keep the same size and colors as on the preceding clock. That choice preserves continuity for viewers while changing the outline and adding more flexible perimeter lighting.

RGB strips give the system the ability to display colors beyond the previous standard red and amber. The green coaches’ challenge signal is another integrated use of the lighting system. The announcement does not set out a complete color-to-event guide, so it would be premature to assign every color a particular game situation.
What changes behind the scenes?
The redesign also addresses the people who operate and maintain timing equipment. Tissot and the NBA describe an improved interface intended to make operation more streamlined and improve staff speed and accuracy. A modernized signaling distribution system is intended to support additional functions and monitoring.

The aluminum frame and modular construction are presented as practical service changes: the lighter frame is specified as 20% lighter, while the modular design is intended to make on-site maintenance, hardware swaps and future upgrades easier. These are claims in the January 2025 announcement; it does not publish independent tests or quantify time saved during operation or repair.
When will arenas get the new clocks?
The announced schedule called for rollout to begin in NBA arenas with the 2025–26 season, followed by WNBA arenas in the 2026 season. Those dates describe the start of the planned rollout, not confirmation that every arena has completed installation. The official announcement does not provide an arena-by-arena installation list or confirm completion.

Is the Tissot NBA watch part of the shot-clock system?
No. The Tissot Supersport NBA Special Edition 2025 is a separate consumer watch unveiled alongside the shot-clock redesign. The NBA Communications release describes uniform-number-inspired numerals, an NBA-logo seconds hand, a basketball-textured dial and a case back featuring the NBA logo with team locations arranged by conference. It said the watch would be available through Tissot boutiques in France and the United States and Tissot’s online store from January 23, 2025, with worldwide rollout from March 2025. Those were the announced availability plans; they do not establish current stock. The watch is fan merchandise, not a shot-clock component.
