Porsche Design’s official fact sheet dates licensed production of Porsche Design Timepieces under Eterna from 1996 to 2014. The end of that period marked a change in manufacturing arrangements: Porsche Design’s history describes the 2014 creation of a Swiss watchmaking organization as a move toward its own production capability. The official sources do not disclose why the relationship ended or establish that it followed a dispute.
When did Eterna make Porsche Design watches?
Porsche Design’s March 2026 fact sheet gives the Eterna-licensed production period as 1996–2014. The brand’s Timepieces Collaboration Story describes Eterna as a major phase in the history of Porsche Design watches, but uses the broader description “late 1990s” for the period’s start. For the precise dates, the fact sheet provides the more specific timeline.
What changed after the Eterna period?
Porsche Design’s official history says Porsche Design Timepieces AG was founded in Switzerland in 2014 as the brand moved toward an independent watchmaking structure. That supports describing the change as a transition in manufacturing arrangements—not as evidence of a falling-out. Porsche Design has not publicly established in these sources the agreement’s commercial terms, the reason it ended, or whether either company initiated the change.
The next stage involved Porsche Design’s own Swiss manufactory. The company said it began searching for a new site in 2020 because the Solothurn location could not be expanded and its capacity would not be sufficient over the long term. In May 2024, Porsche Design announced the purchase of a building in Grenchen for a new manufactory, intended to support production as well as product development, quality management, after-sales service and logistics. Its June 2024 announcement quoted Porsche Lifestyle Group CEO Stefan Buescher: “A good ten years ago, we made the groundbreaking, strategic decision to open our own manufactory in the Swiss town of Solothurn to manufacture our watches ourselves.”

How the Grenchen manufactory fits into the timeline
| Period | What Porsche Design says happened |
|---|---|
| 1995 | F. A. P. Beteiligungen GmbH acquired the building later used for the Grenchen manufactory. |
| 1996–2014 | Porsche Design Timepieces were produced under license from Eterna. |
| 2014 | Porsche Design describes the founding of Porsche Design Timepieces AG in Switzerland as a step toward an independent structure. |
| 2020 | Porsche Design began searching for a new manufactory location because Solothurn could not be expanded and would not meet long-term capacity needs. |
| May 2024 | Porsche Design announced the purchase of the Grenchen building for its new manufactory. |
| Fall 2025 | The company says it relocated from Solothurn and began production in Grenchen. |
| March 19, 2026 | Porsche Design officially opened the Grenchen manufactory. |
The Grenchen building has a connection to the company that made the earlier watches: Porsche Design says it was built in 1955 and formerly served as Eterna’s headquarters. The site covers 3,600 m², including 1,700 m² for production and logistics and 450 m² for customer experience and exhibitions, according to the company’s March 2026 fact sheet. Porsche Design states that the manufactory has capacity for up to 10,000 watches a year; that is a capacity figure, not a report of actual annual output. The fact sheet also lists 10 watchmaker workstations, 211 solar panels with peak output of 134 kW, and a stated energy self-sufficiency rate of 62.3%. These are company-reported facility figures.

An Eterna-era Porsche Design watch is a historical production category, not a guarantee about an individual watch’s authenticity, condition or value. The official history establishes the manufacturing eras but does not verify the status or market price of a particular used watch. If you are identifying or comparing one, check the model reference and movement, production era, materials and complications, provenance, service records, and whether parts and qualified servicing are available for that specific reference.

- Challenge Watch Prize Winner of the 2021 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève - The GPHG has long been acclaimed as the watchmaking industry's highest honor. It's an annual competition involving several hundreds of watches marketed during the year.
- The World on Your Wrist - Inspired by "Blue Marble" the first photograph of Earth as a whole taken from space in 1972. Micro-engraved the earth's terrain on the dial, showing natural elements such as land, mountains and oceans. Unique single pointer design, indicating the time in a way that simulates the rotation of the earth. Means to awaken people's awareness of protecting the earth's environment.
- Innovative Time Telling - When the hour hand rotates 30°, the minute hand rotates 390°. This innovative change in the gear ratio of the traditional movement means the watch can indicate both the hour and minute with a single pointer. This ingenious solution transforms the conventional way of time-telling.
