The exact watch Christian Bédat named as his first “grail watch” is not established by the available published material. What can be documented is the historical context around Bédat, Bedat & Co. and RED8: Bédat later launched RED8 as a distinct venture, initially focused on watches, with a design and production approach that differed from traditional Swiss luxury positioning.
What was Christian Bédat’s first grail watch?
There is not enough evidence to identify it. The exact interview suggested by the title—and therefore the watch Bédat called his first grail, why it mattered to him, and when he said it—has not been located in the cited material. A specific model or personal memory should not be attributed to him without that interview.
How RED8 fits into Bédat’s watchmaking story
A 2009 WatchProSite feature recounts Bédat’s earlier work and his association with Bedat & Co. It says he left Bedat & Co. in 2006 and that RED8WORLD launched in 2009. The feature presents RED8 as a separate venture, not as a Bedat & Co. collection. Read the 2009 WatchProSite account.
Worldtempus described RED8 in 2009 as a lifestyle brand whose first product category was watches. Its launch-era report listed 11 references and a price of US$880. Those figures capture that publication’s 2009 snapshot; they do not establish current pricing, stock or availability. See the 2009 Worldtempus report.

What made RED8 watches distinctive?
RED8’s launch-era identity paired a message about design and manufacturing with recognizable details. The 2009 WatchProSite feature describes the idea as “Designed on Earth, Made in Asia” and notes red crowns and message-bearing bezels. Worldtempus likewise characterized RED8 as a lifestyle concept rather than simply a conventional luxury-watch label. These are descriptions of the brand’s historical positioning, not claims about its present-day business.
Manufacturing and movements varied across the historical references. A 2011 interview page quotes Bédat saying, “My Red8 watches are produced in the Far East.” A Fratello post from October 1, 2009 describes a RED8 movement as “eco-quartz,” with a rotor charging a capacitor. Neither source establishes one movement type for every model. Read the 2011 interview page; see Fratello’s 2009 post.

The dated sources document RED8’s launch-era positioning and several historical watch references, including the i-matic and Dive 42. They do not establish RED8’s current operations, current inventory, or a consistent technical specification across the range. A 2013 Financial Times-hosted article quotes Bédat saying, “Upscale movement manufacturing is still exclusive to the Swiss watch industry.” That is his stated view in that article, not an independently established industry rule.
