How to choose a Garmin for hiking
Decide whether you need maps on the watch
If you want built-in maps and on-watch navigation, Garmin lists those capabilities for the Forerunner 970 and fēnix 8. Garmin’s comparison page does not list built-in mapping for the compared Instinct 3 Solar Tactical Edition. That distinction applies to the compared model, so check the feature list for the specific Instinct 3 variant you are considering.

Garmin says fēnix 8 includes preloaded road and trail maps and point-to-point navigation. It also describes Outdoor Maps+ as adding layers such as satellite imagery, public land maps, campgrounds, and national parks. Check current subscription terms and availability for your region before relying on those additional layers.
Match outdoor features to the route
For hikes where rugged construction and orientation sensors matter more than built-in maps, the Instinct 3 is the outdoor-focused option in this group. Garmin describes the series as including an altimeter, barometer, and 3-axis electronic compass, alongside access to multiple global navigation satellite systems. For mapped hikes, the Forerunner 970 and fēnix 8 are the clearer choices in Garmin’s listed specifications.

How to choose a Garmin for running
Start with the Forerunner range if running is your main activity. Garmin organizes its running watches into entry, advanced, and premium tiers, with comparisons spanning training status and readiness, GPS accuracy or multi-band GPS, mapping, case size, battery, display, and controls.
The Forerunner 970 sits at the premium end of the choices described here: Garmin lists multi-band GPS, full-color maps, enhanced navigation, and premium running and triathlon features. If you run without needing maps or those higher-tier training features, compare Garmin’s entry and advanced options rather than assuming the premium model is necessary.

If you also need dedicated outdoor navigation or advanced running features, weigh those needs against the Venu’s everyday-focused feature mix.
