You do not need to disable Automatic Activity Detection: Oura says it cannot currently be switched off. Instead, you can silence notices for selected activities or turn off Activity Heart Rate if conserving battery matters more than having heart-rate information during detected activities.
1. Choose how much activity detail you want
Automatic Activity Detection (AAD) identifies activities and lets you confirm, edit, or dismiss individual entries. Oura says there is currently no way to disable AAD, but you can silence notifications for specific activities in the app settings. Oura’s Automatic Activity Detection guide describes these controls.

Keep Activity Heart Rate on for activity heart-rate information
Activity Heart Rate is a separate control from AAD. You can switch it off while AAD continues to detect activities, but those entries will not include activity heart-rate information. Oura identifies turning it off as one way to conserve ring battery. This is the clearest trade-off to consider first: keep it on if that detail is useful, or turn it off if battery conservation takes priority.
2. Set only the notifications you want
Oura’s notification controls cover low battery, inactivity, activity progress, and bedtime. Low-battery and inactivity notices are enabled by default, according to Oura’s notifications guidance. Review the available options and keep the alerts that help you act; silence the ones that interrupt without adding value.

In-app settings are only part of delivery. For phone notifications, the ring must be worn, the app must be allowed to run in the background, Bluetooth must be on, and the phone may also need to allow notifications for the app. If an alert you enabled does not arrive, check those conditions as well as the in-app choice.
3. Leave Airplane Mode off for normal syncing
Airplane Mode disables the ring’s radio transmission, including Bluetooth, but does not stop it from collecting data. Syncing resumes when you turn Airplane Mode off. Oura says Ring 4 can store up to seven days of data without syncing and recommends syncing daily to avoid data loss. The seven-day figure is a maximum storage interval, not a reason to wait that long between syncs.

Oura’s Airplane Mode instructions also give a maximum Airplane Mode interval of seven days. For ordinary use, leave the mode off so the ring can communicate with the app and sync regularly; use it when you specifically want to stop radio transmission, then disable it to resume syncing.
4. Keep automatic firmware updates enabled
Automatic firmware updates are enabled by default. Oura says Ring 4 needs firmware version 2.0.0 or later for this feature. An automatic update requires the ring battery to be at least 30%, Airplane Mode to be off, Bluetooth to be on, and the app to be opened after a firmware release. Leaving the setting enabled avoids having to manage updates manually, but it does not mean an update installs immediately under any conditions. If one does not proceed, check the battery level, Airplane Mode, Bluetooth, and whether you have opened the app since the release.
5. Check compatibility and country-specific features during setup
Some Oura features vary by country. Oura lists iOS 16 or later, or Android 11 or later with Google Play services, and Bluetooth 5.0 support among its compatibility requirements. Review Oura’s setup and compatibility guidance for current details. If a feature or control is unavailable, country availability, app version, operating system, or membership may matter.

Units, notifications, data sharing, and other preferences can be changed later in Settings, so setup is not your only opportunity to adjust them.

Where to find the controls
In the Oura app, the menu in the upper-left opens Settings and other app sections. The battery icon in the upper-right opens device information and Airplane Mode. Labels and screen layouts can change between app versions, so use the current app interface rather than relying on an exact sequence of taps.
