Thierry Stern said he owned all of Patek Philippe’s shares in remarks reported by Business of Fashion on October 1, 2026, following his father Philippe Stern’s death in June 2026. A report published the same day by Exame also relayed the ownership statement.

This is the clearest current account of the post-June 2026 ownership position, but it reports Thierry Stern’s statement rather than publishing the company’s share register. Patek Philippe’s official family-history page confirms the family’s long-standing ownership and Thierry’s presidency; it predates the reported change in shares and does not describe today’s shareholding.

Patek Philippe’s official history of the Stern family traces the family’s ownership to 1932. Brothers Charles and Jean Stern owned Cadrans Stern Frères, a dial maker that already supplied the watchmaker. They acquired Patek Philippe, appointed watchmaker Jean Pfister to lead it, and brought movement production in-house.

Who runs Patek Philippe?
Thierry Stern is the company’s president as well as its owner, according to his reported October 2026 statement. Patek Philippe’s official history records that he joined in 1990, became vice president in 2003, and has served as president since 2009. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry’s 2009 announcement specifies that his appointment was as President of the Board of Directors.
The company’s public history also describes parts of his hands-on role. He inaugurated the PP6 manufacture in 2020 and personally performs the final validation of the chimes of the company’s minute repeaters.

A historical leadership snapshot should not be mistaken for a current roster. The Federation’s 2009 notice listed a Management Committee comprising Thierry Stern, Philippe Stern as honorary president, and Claude Peny as CEO. That dated notice does not establish who currently sits on the committee or who holds today’s CEO role; the available sources do not verify a current committee roster.

Patek Philippe presents family ownership as a way to preserve independence and allow long development timelines. On its company philosophy page, it says developing a watch, movement, or collection can take years and sometimes decades, and that family ownership gives it the freedom to give an idea the time it needs. That is the company’s explanation of its model, not independent proof that family control produces better results.

Thierry Stern has also described family involvement in creative decisions. In a June 3, 2025 interview with CNA Luxury, he said family participation helps carry the brand’s identity forward and set boundaries for change. He put the balance this way: “The ability to adapt while maintaining our identity is what distinguishes us.”
In the October 2026 Business of Fashion interview, he framed independence as control over the company’s direction: “Being independent allows me to choose my own destiny and my own strategy. I have nobody to tell me what to do.” His statement describes his perspective as owner and president; it is not comparative evidence about performance versus other ownership structures.

What is known about succession?
Thierry Stern has said that he intends to hand Patek Philippe to his sons, Adrien and Tristan. In the October 1, 2026 Business of Fashion report, he said, “We do not have a timetable.” The plan is therefore a stated intention, not a completed transfer or a scheduled succession. The public accounts cited here do not establish how shares, voting rights, or management responsibilities would be transferred.
