Raymond Weil was a Swiss watch-industry entrepreneur who founded the Geneva-based watch company bearing his name in 1976. The brand’s history says he had spent more than 20 years in the watch trade and was 50 when he started the business. A later interview with his grandson and the company’s CEO, Elie Bernheim, also identifies Simone Bédat as a co-founder.

Was Raymond Weil a real person?

Yes. Raymond Weil was a watchmaking entrepreneur, not simply a name created for a watch brand. He built a company in Geneva after working in the industry for more than two decades, according to the company’s retrospective history.

How did he start the watch company?

RAYMOND WEIL’s official history says Weil and his wife, Éliane, presented their first creations at the Basel fair in 1976. Their initial company was called Dinita, a name formed from the names of their daughters, Diane and Anita. The company account says Weil was 50 at the time and had more than 20 years of experience in watchmaking.

In a 2026 interview, CEO Elie Bernheim described Raymond Weil and Simone Bédat as co-founders. Bernheim said Bédat left in 1996 to form Bedat & Co. This adds a detail to the company’s shorter official overview, which emphasizes Weil’s role in founding the business.

Bernheim situated the launch in the middle of the Quartz Crisis, when quartz watches were disrupting the traditional Swiss watch industry. Those characterizations, as well as accounts of his travels to build business relationships in the United States, United Kingdom and Middle East, come from the brand’s retrospective account.

How did the Weil family continue the business?

The company history says Weil invited his son-in-law Olivier Bernheim to join in 1982. The two led the business together for 14 years. Elie Bernheim, Raymond Weil’s grandson, joined in 2006 and took the reins in 2014, according to his 2026 interview. The brand identifies Elie as its current leader.
