Roger Dubuis was a Swiss master watchmaker who co-founded the Geneva watch maison that bears his name with designer Carlos Dias in 1995. Trained in watchmaking from age 15, Dubuis worked in the industry for decades and became known for complicated mechanical watches. He died on 13 October 2017, aged 79.
How Roger Dubuis became a watchmaker
Dubuis’s interest began in childhood. In the maison’s official history, he recalled seeing the mechanism in a church bell tower: “I used to pass the clock in the belltower of the church. And then, badaboom, I fell in love with that mechanism. That’s how my passion for watchmaking was born.” The page does not say when he originally made the remark.
He began formal watchmaking education at 15 and studied at the Geneva watchmaking school, according to the maison and the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. After graduating, he worked with several established brands and restored antique watches in his spare time. The maison describes this broader stretch of his career as 23 years.
His work before founding the maison
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry says Dubuis spent 14 years at a major Geneva manufacture, contributing to complications including perpetual calendars, chronographs, split-seconds chronographs and minute repeaters. That specific period is part of, rather than a replacement for, the maison’s broader account of 23 years working with several brands.

Why he founded Roger Dubuis
On 19 May 1995, aged 57, Dubuis co-founded Manufacture Roger Dubuis with designer Carlos Dias. The maison’s official history records the year and names Dias; the exact day comes from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.
The company’s early work centered on demanding mechanical complications. The maison says that in its first 11 years it developed tourbillons, minute repeaters, biretrograde perpetual calendars and split-seconds chronographs. It dates its first in-house movements to 1999 and says they were certified by the Poinçon de Genève, a Geneva seal associated with standards for watchmaking.

What happened to the company after its founding
Richemont announced in 2008 that it had acquired a controlling 60 percent interest in Manufacture Roger Dubuis SA. In its announcement, Richemont said the company would continue making and distributing watches under the Roger Dubuis name and operate as an autonomous maison within the group.
The maison remains based in Geneva. Richemont’s current profile describes its manufacture as producing in-house calibres certified by the Poinçon de Genève. That is a current description of the maison, not a claim that every historical Roger Dubuis model has that certification.

When Roger Dubuis died
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reports that Dubuis died on 13 October 2017, aged 79. The maison’s official timeline also records his death in 2017.

Dubuis’s legacy is both personal and institutional: he trained as a watchmaker, worked on complicated mechanisms, and helped establish an independent Geneva maison devoted to complex mechanical watchmaking. The company that carries his name continued after Richemont became its controlling shareholder, preserving the brand while placing it within a larger luxury group.
