Whoop Unveils Next-Gen 5.0 And Medical-Grade MG Devices: What’s the Difference?

WHOOP 5.0 is the standard next-generation recovery and fitness wearable, while WHOOP MG adds regulated ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm features. Here is what “medical-grade” means, why Blood Pressure Insights is not a replacement for a cuff, and how battery life, accessories, and launch membership prices compare.

Whoop Unveils Next-Gen 5.0 And Medical-Grade MG Devices: WHOOP 5.0 is the standard wearable for sleep, recovery, strain, and fitness, while WHOOP MG adds FDA-cleared ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm features. Blood Pressure Insights is available as a calibrated wellness estimate, not as a medical blood-pressure measurement or cuff replacement.

WHOOP announced both devices on May 8, 2025, but the two models are not interchangeable in purpose. The important buying decision is whether regulated heart features matter to you—not whether the MG name makes every WHOOP metric medical-grade.

Key takeaways

  • WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG were announced on May 8, 2025 as separate next-generation wearables.
  • WHOOP MG is the model associated with on-demand ECG readings and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, while WHOOP 5.0 is the standard wellness and performance option.
  • WHOOP Blood Pressure Insights estimates overnight blood-pressure ranges after three cuff readings; WHOOP says the feature is not a medical device and cannot replace a validated upper-arm cuff.
  • WHOOP listed launch-year U.S. membership prices of $199 for One, $239 for Peak, and $359 for Life.
  • WHOOP claims more than 14 days of battery life for both devices, with a wearable Wireless PowerPack available for extended charging.

What did WHOOP unveil on May 8, 2025?

WHOOP unveiled WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG on May 8, 2025. Both devices introduced the company’s next hardware generation, a redesigned app experience, Healthspan with WHOOP Age, updated sleep scoring, women’s hormonal insights, expanded fitness tracking, and new heart-health features. WHOOP positioned WHOOP 5.0 as the mainstream model and WHOOP MG as the premium model for regulated heart-monitoring capabilities.

WHOOP Founder and CEO Will Ahmed described the launch this way: “This isn’t just a product launch. It’s a new chapter for WHOOP and for our members.” The statement appears in WHOOP’s May 8, 2025 launch announcement.

WHOOP said both devices have enhanced sensors, a redesigned processor, improved power efficiency, a form factor 7% smaller than the previous generation, and more than 14 days of battery life. Those are WHOOP’s manufacturer claims, not independent test results. WHOOP also said the devices were available through WHOOP.com, Amazon, Best Buy, Flipkart, and other retailers, although current stock, bundles, and prices can change.

For readers comparing the hardware, the WHOOP 5.0 fitness tracker is the more appropriate starting point for sleep, recovery, strain, fitness, and general wellness tracking. WHOOP MG is the relevant choice for readers who specifically want ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm features and who meet the applicable restrictions.

What is the difference between WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG?

The main difference between WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG is heart functionality: WHOOP 5.0 is the standard next-generation wearable, while WHOOP MG adds the medical-regulated ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm capabilities associated with WHOOP Life.

Decision factor WHOOP 5.0 WHOOP MG
Primary audience People focused on sleep, recovery, strain, fitness, performance, and wellness insights People who want those capabilities plus on-demand ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm features
ECG Not the MG ECG hardware path On-demand ECG reading associated with WHOOP Life
Irregular-heart-rhythm notifications Not the MG regulated-heart-feature path Available where supported, subject to regional and user restrictions
Blood Pressure Insights Wellness estimate after cuff calibration, where available Wellness estimate after cuff calibration, where available
Battery claim More than 14 days, according to WHOOP More than 14 days, according to WHOOP
Best fit Most members who want WHOOP’s core tracking experience Members specifically seeking regulated heart-monitoring features

The distinction matters because “medical-grade” should not be applied to every feature on WHOOP MG. The strongest supported description is that WHOOP MG includes an FDA-cleared ECG feature and other regulated heart-monitoring functionality. Blood Pressure Insights is a separate wellness feature with different regulatory status and limitations.

Is the WHOOP MG ECG FDA cleared?

Yes. The FDA cleared the WHOOP ECG Feature through a 510(k) decision dated February 7, 2025. The clearance applies to the ECG feature, not automatically to every measurement or insight generated by WHOOP MG. The FDA 510(k) clearance letter for the WHOOP ECG Feature is the relevant regulatory document.

WHOOP’s support documentation says the ECG feature is intended for users aged 22 and older. The documentation also says the feature is not intended for people with known arrhythmias other than atrial fibrillation and is not recommended for people with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, or other implanted electronic devices. ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications are medically regulated features and are not available in every region. Check the feature’s availability for the country where the device will be used before buying.

  • ACCURACY: Verity Sense is able to accurately track heart rate when placed against the skin on your upper arm, forearm, or can be clipped to goggles.

An ECG can record electrical activity associated with the heart, but a wearable ECG is not a substitute for emergency care, a clinician’s assessment, or every form of cardiac testing. A concerning result or symptom requires appropriate medical attention rather than repeated consumer-device checks.

Does WHOOP 5.0 measure blood pressure?

WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG can provide Blood Pressure Insights where the feature is available, but the feature estimates overnight systolic and diastolic blood-pressure ranges rather than directly measuring blood pressure like a validated cuff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WHOOP says users must log three readings from a traditional blood-pressure cuff for calibration. The feature then uses overnight biometric information, including heart rate, heart-rate variability, and pulse-wave patterns, to produce estimated ranges. A validated upper-arm blood-pressure monitor is therefore a necessary reference and calibration companion, not an optional replacement.

“Blood Pressure Insights is not a medical device and should not be used for diagnosis, treatment, or management of any medical condition, including hypertension.”

That wording comes from WHOOP’s Blood Pressure Insights technical explainer. Users should not use WHOOP’s estimate to diagnose hypertension, change medication, or decide that a clinical reading is unnecessary. Anyone monitoring blood pressure for a medical reason should follow a clinician’s instructions and use an appropriate validated monitor.

How accurate are WHOOP Blood Pressure Insights?

According to WHOOP’s 2026 technical explainer, the company analyzed 10,746 paired measurements. WHOOP reported that systolic estimates were within 10 mmHg of a reference cuff 88.68% of the time and diastolic estimates were within 10 mmHg 96.57% of the time. WHOOP also reported average mean absolute errors of 5.03 mmHg for systolic estimates and 3.64 mmHg for diastolic estimates.

Systolic estimates within 10 mmHg 88.68% Comparison with a reference cuff in WHOOP’s analysis
Diastolic estimates within 10 mmHg 96.57% Comparison with a reference cuff in WHOOP’s analysis
Average systolic mean absolute error 5.03 mmHg Average difference reported by WHOOP for systolic estimates
Average diastolic mean absolute error 3.64 mmHg Average difference reported by WHOOP for diastolic estimates

These are figures from WHOOP’s own 2026 validation discussion, not an independent test conducted by this article. WHOOP’s published materials state that Blood Pressure Insights had not been independently validated or cleared by the FDA and was intended for wellness purposes. WHOOP has also publicly described a disagreement with the FDA about whether Blood Pressure Insights should be reviewed as a medical device; that dispute does not turn the feature into an FDA-cleared blood-pressure monitor.

Which WHOOP membership includes ECG and Blood Pressure Insights?

At launch, WHOOP positioned the advanced MG heart features under WHOOP Life. WHOOP’s launch-year U.S. annual prices were $199 for WHOOP One, $239 for WHOOP Peak, and $359 for WHOOP Life. These prices are dated May 8, 2025; membership pricing, trial terms, plan names, and included features may have changed.

Membership Launch annual U.S. price Relevant positioning
WHOOP One $199 per year Core WHOOP tracking and wellness experience
WHOOP Peak $239 per year Expanded health, fitness, and performance features
WHOOP Life $359 per year Premium tier associated with WHOOP MG, ECG, and advanced heart-monitoring features

Before purchasing WHOOP MG, verify the current plan page and confirm that ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications are included in the target country. WHOOP’s membership features documentation is the appropriate place to check the current feature-to-plan relationship.

How long does WHOOP 5.0 battery last?

WHOOP claims more than 14 days of battery life for WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG. Actual endurance can vary with usage, software, sensor operation, temperature, and charging behavior, so the claim should be treated as a manufacturer specification rather than a guaranteed independent test result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The charging system is designed around continuous wear. WHOOP says its Wireless PowerPack can slide onto the device while the device is being worn, automatically stop charging at 100%, and store enough energy for up to a month when fully charged. WHOOP’s official product page listed the Wireless PowerPack at $49 during research; the current price and availability should be checked before publication or purchase.

For users who prioritize uninterrupted sleep and recovery data, the WHOOP Wireless PowerPack is the most relevant accessory. The official WHOOP accessories guide explains the charging and band ecosystem, while the official Wireless PowerPack page carries current product information.

Is WHOOP MG worth it over WHOOP 5.0?

WHOOP MG is worth considering over WHOOP 5.0 only when ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications are important enough to justify the premium membership and the applicable regional and health restrictions. WHOOP 5.0 is the more sensible choice for users primarily seeking sleep, recovery, strain, fitness, and performance insights.

  • Choose WHOOP 5.0 if the main goal is recovery and performance tracking and there is no specific need for ECG.
  • Choose WHOOP MG if on-demand ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications are available in the user’s region and are relevant to the user’s needs.
  • Buy a validated cuff as well if blood-pressure tracking matters; neither model turns Blood Pressure Insights into a clinical blood-pressure monitor.
  • Check the membership total cost rather than comparing hardware alone, because WHOOP Life was the launch tier associated with MG’s advanced heart features.

The practical upgrade question is therefore not “Does MG track fitness better?” The more useful question is “Do I need the regulated heart features?” If the answer is no, the standard WHOOP 5.0 experience covers the central sleep, recovery, strain, and fitness use case without paying specifically for MG’s distinguishing features.

What should buyers verify before purchasing?

  1. Confirm the region. ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications are not available in every market.
  2. Confirm eligibility. The ECG documentation specifies an age threshold of 22 or older and restrictions involving certain arrhythmias and implanted electronic devices.
  3. Check the membership. Verify the current price and feature list instead of relying on the May 8, 2025 launch prices.
  4. Plan for blood-pressure calibration. Blood Pressure Insights requires three cuff readings and remains a wellness estimate.
  5. Check accessory generation. Confirm that replacement bands, chargers, apparel pods, and the PowerPack fit WHOOP 5.0 or MG.
  6. Check the purchase channel. WHOOP announced availability through WHOOP.com, Amazon, Best Buy, Flipkart, and other retailers, but current stock and bundle contents vary.

What is the final WHOOP 5.0 versus WHOOP MG verdict?

WHOOP 5.0 is the standard next-generation wearable for readers who want continuous sleep, recovery, strain, fitness, and wellness tracking. WHOOP MG is the premium alternative for users who specifically want its ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm capabilities and who live in a supported region and meet the feature restrictions.

Neither WHOOP 5.0 nor WHOOP MG should be purchased as a replacement for a validated blood-pressure cuff. Blood Pressure Insights can help users observe overnight trends after calibration, but WHOOP explicitly describes the feature as non-medical and unsuitable for diagnosing, treating, or managing hypertension.
