A chronograph hand that stops a little short of its zero mark, or past it, is often a hand-position offset that can be corrected at home. The procedure is not universal, though. Crown positions, button holds and which hands can be moved differ from one movement (caliber) to another, so the first step is identifying your exact model and following its own manufacturer instructions.
What an off-zero hand does and does not tell you
“Off zero” describes where a chronograph hand rests after a reset. It does not, by itself, identify a dead battery or a damaged movement. Manufacturer support material treats misalignment as a calibration matter that can require correction, and describes adjustment procedures for it.
Some owners first notice the problem after changing the battery, and DETOMASO’s support article on the question, updated March 4, 2025, notes that the issue may arise after a reset or battery replacement. That is a timing observation, not a diagnosis. Do not assume a new battery is needed because a hand sits off its mark. Published guides from the manufacturers reviewed here do not establish a general root cause, a failure rate, or a link to shock, magnetism or battery condition.
Confirm your movement before touching the crown
Every procedure below is tied to one movement. Before you pull the crown or press a pusher:

- Find the model number on the caseback or the paperwork, and the caliber if the manufacturer lists one.
- Download or locate the manual for that exact model. Use the manufacturer’s own guide, not a forum summary or a guide for a sibling model.
- Note which chronograph hand is off zero. The second hand, a subdial hand or an hour or minute counter may each need a different step.
- Check whether your guide asks you to wait for a sweep to finish before pushing the crown back in.
Movement-specific procedures
The examples below come from manufacturer guides for the named models. They illustrate how much the sequences differ. They are not instructions for other watches.
| Model (guide source) | Crown position | Button action | Hand adjusted | Completion step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citizen B612 | Pulled out two steps | Hold upper-right button 3 seconds, then use it to position the hand | Chronograph second hand to 0; hand moves continuously while the button is held | Push crown in, then press and release lower-right button |
| Citizen B620 | Pulled out two steps | Hold upper-right button 2 seconds, then press and release it | Chronograph second hand to 0 | Push crown in, then press and release lower-right button |
| Citizen 0510 | Pulled out two steps | Upper-right button adjusts the chronograph second hand; lower-right button adjusts the chronograph hour and second hand | Chronograph second hand and chronograph hour hand, with separate corrections | Push crown in; hold time not stated in the guide |
| Timex W273 linear chronograph | Pulled to its outer position | Hold Button B 5 seconds to start full calibration of the linear indicator | 4th center hand aligned if needed; linear indicator calibrated | Calibration can take up to 32 seconds; wait for it to finish |
| BMW OS20/FS00 | Pulled to position 3 | Use the specified pusher to zero the chronograph second hand | Chronograph second hand | Return crown only after hands stop moving |
Citizen B612
- Pull the crown out two steps.
- Hold the upper-right button for 3 seconds.
- Use the upper-right button to bring the chronograph second hand to 0. The hand moves continuously while the button is held.
- Push the crown in.
- Press and release the lower-right button to finish.
Citizen B620
- Pull the crown out two steps.
- Hold the upper-right button for 2 seconds.
- Press and release the upper-right button to set the chronograph second hand to 0.
- Push the crown in.
- Press and release the lower-right button to complete the adjustment.
The B620 sequence uses a shorter hold and discrete presses. Do not carry over the B612’s continuous-movement behavior to it.
Citizen 0510
With the crown pulled out two steps, the upper-right button adjusts the chronograph second hand and the lower-right button adjusts the chronograph hour and second hand. Push the crown in to complete. Because two hands are involved, confirm in the guide which hand each button moves before you press anything.

Timex W273 linear chronograph
Timex’s W273 guide separates two tasks. First, pull the crown to its outer position and align the 4th center hand if needed. Second, hold Button B for 5 seconds to start full calibration of the linear indicator. The guide says that calibration can take up to 32 seconds. That figure is the length of the calibration sweep, not a measure of how common the problem is. The guide is an undated Timex document that is generally understood to date from around 2016, so check that it matches your watch’s printed model number.

- Pull the crown to position 3.
- Use the pusher specified in the guide to zero the chronograph second hand.
- Wait until the hands have stopped moving before you return the crown.
This guide warns that returning the crown while the hands are still moving can register their current position as the new zero. Treat that warning as specific to this guide, and check your own manual for the equivalent instruction.
Working through the sequence safely
- Follow the timing in your guide. Let any sweep finish before pushing the crown in.
- Count crown steps exactly. Pulling one step too far or not far enough can put the watch in a different mode.
- Do not force a button or the crown. If nothing moves, stop and recheck the model and caliber.
- Do not open the case. Do not borrow the sequence from a different caliber, even one from the same brand.
When the hand still won’t reach zero
If the model-specific sequence is missing from your manual, fails to move the hand, or the hand will not return to zero reliably, stop and contact the manufacturer’s service channel or a qualified watchmaker. Those are the only routes that can confirm whether the fault is calibration or something mechanical. Published sources reviewed for this article give no universal repair procedure and no typical service price, so ask for a quote for your specific model.

Do not buy a replacement battery, repair kit or part until the watch’s exact model is confirmed and the part is shown to be compatible with it.
What the evidence covers and what it does not
The manufacturer guides cited here establish that chronograph hands can need realignment and describe how to do it for specific movements. They do not establish how often the problem occurs, what causes it in general, or whether shock, magnetism or battery condition contributes. Treat any single explanation you read elsewhere with caution unless it cites a manual for your own watch.
The support wording owners use for this problem is consistent across sources: the chronograph second hand does not return to the zero position, or the hands are not in the starting position. The usual next question is whether a battery change caused it. The guides above support checking the procedure first.
