If a chronograph hand stops short of zero after you reset the stopwatch, its reference position may need realignment; it does not automatically mean the watch is broken. The correction is specific to the watch’s movement or caliber: Seiko and Citizen, for example, give different button and crown sequences. Identify the exact model and follow its official manual rather than trying a generic reset.
What “reset to zero” means
The chronograph or stopwatch hand is the hand used to measure elapsed time. When you reset the chronograph, it should return to its reference position—usually zero. A visible offset can indicate that this preliminary position is misaligned. Seiko says correcting the position is necessary for accurate stopwatch measurements (Seiko V172/V174/V175 manual).

Do not confuse the chronograph hand with the ordinary seconds hand that keeps time. Some watches have a large central chronograph hand and a separate small seconds subdial. Check the exact caliber’s parts diagram before following any adjustment instructions (Seiko V172/V174/V175 manual; Seiko 8R46/8R48 manual).

Preliminary-position misalignment
Seiko identifies strong impact—such as dropping or hitting the watch—and magnetic influence from magnet-generating objects as possible causes of a hand moving out of its preliminary position. Its troubleshooting guidance also refers to external influence or a system reset. These are possible explanations, not a diagnosis: the available manufacturer guidance does not establish that every off-zero hand is caused by impact or magnetism (Seiko V172/V174/V175 manual; Seiko troubleshooting).

Low charge on some solar watches
On the cited Seiko solar models, low power can make stopwatch operation or adjustment unavailable. If the ordinary seconds hand advances in two-second intervals or has stopped, the manual says to charge the watch before attempting preliminary-position adjustment. This is a model-specific power warning; it does not establish low charge as the cause of every misaligned hand (Seiko V172/V174/V175 manual; Seiko troubleshooting).
How to troubleshoot it safely
- Stop and reset normally. Use the chronograph’s ordinary reset control once. Confirm you are watching the stopwatch hand, not the running seconds hand. The Seiko mechanical chronograph instructions describe normal stopwatch resetting and caution against pulling out the crown to set the time or date while the stopwatch is operating (Seiko 8R46/8R48 manual).
- Find the exact model and caliber. Look at the case, paperwork, or manufacturer’s model information, then find the official manual for that watch. Button labels and adjustment sequences are not universal, even within one brand.
- Check power if the manual calls for it. For a solar model with a low-power indication, charge it according to its manual before attempting an adjustment.
- Follow only the matching preliminary-position procedure. Observe the specified crown position, button sequence, and any screw-lock instructions. Do not pull the crown or press buttons based on another watch’s procedure.
- Reset settings if instructed. Some procedures can affect the displayed time or require time and calendar correction afterward.
- Stop if the prescribed procedure fails. If the hand still misses zero, controls do not respond after the required power check, or the watch has other symptoms, contact the retailer or an authorized service channel.
Why there is no universal button sequence
These official procedures illustrate why the caliber matters. They are examples for the named movements, not instructions to try on other watches.

| Movement or caliber | What its official instructions say | After adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Seiko V172/V174/V175 solar/quartz | Check that the watch is operating; charge it first if the ordinary seconds hand advances every two seconds or has stopped. Pull the crown to the second click, hold button A for three seconds to select the stopwatch minute hand, and use button B to align it to zero. Hold A again to select the 1/5-second hand, then use B to align that hand. | Return the crown to its normal position. The manual warns that the main time, and on some models the alarm time, may gain or lose time during adjustment; reset them as needed (official manual). |
| Citizen B620 Eco-Drive | For the 1/5 chronograph second hand that fails to return to zero, pull the crown to position 2, hold button B for two seconds, press B repeatedly to advance the hand to zero, then return the crown to position 0. | Adjust the time and calendar afterward. The instructions apply to the specific B620 models listed on Citizen’s support page, not all Citizen watches (Citizen support). |
| Seiko 8B92 | Uses its own crown and button sequence to align the stopwatch second and minute hands. | Return the crown after adjustment; the time may need to be set again (Seiko 8B92 manual). |
| Seiko 8R46/8R48 mechanical chronographs | The cited instructions cover normal use: check that the center stopwatch hand is at zero and press button B to reset it. They are not a general hand-recalibration procedure. | Do not pull out the crown to set the time or date while the stopwatch is running (Seiko 8R46/8R48 manual). |
When to seek watch service
Use the manufacturer’s model-specific correction once if your manual provides one and the watch meets its stated operating or charge requirements. If the hand remains out of position, the adjustment controls do not work as described, or another fault is present, ask the retailer or manufacturer’s service channel for help. Seiko advises consulting a retailer when troubleshooting does not resolve a problem (Seiko troubleshooting). The available instructions do not support a universal do-it-yourself internal repair or replacement-hand recommendation.
