If a hand remains away from its zero mark after a normal reset, its reference position may need correction—but the cause and fix depend on the exact movement. Some Citizen quartz calibers provide owner adjustment procedures; their button sequences are not universal and should not be applied to other watches by appearance alone.
What it means when a chronograph hand misses zero
The zero mark is the chronograph hand’s reference position when a measurement is reset. If the stopwatch hand consistently stops elsewhere, the hand may be misaligned relative to that position. Citizen’s instructions document reference-position correction for certain quartz movements. They also describe battery replacement and strong impact as circumstances in which hands may shift on specific calibers. Those examples do not establish a cause for every watch or every off-zero hand.

Start by distinguishing a hand that fails to return to zero from a chronograph that has not been reset using the normal button procedure. On Citizen H50, for example, the regular reset and the adjustments for the chronograph minute and second hands are separate operations.

Find the exact model or caliber in the watch’s documentation, on the manufacturer’s support site, or in its manual. The procedures below apply only to the named Citizen movements. Similar-looking pushers do not mean two watches share the same adjustment sequence. The cited instructions cover these quartz examples; they do not establish a correction procedure for mechanical chronographs or unspecified non-Citizen watches.

Try the normal reset first
Citizen H50
With the crown pushed in, press the lower-right button A to reset the chronograph. The second and minute chronograph hands should point to zero. If the minute hand misses zero, Citizen’s instructions say to press A repeatedly to adjust it. The chronograph second hand has a separate correction procedure, described below. Use only the correction procedure for your caliber
Citizen B620
- Pull the crown out two positions.
- Hold the upper-right button for two seconds.
- Press that button to move the chronograph second hand to zero. Hold it to move the hand continuously.
- Push the crown back in, then press the lower-right button to complete the process.
Citizen describes this correction for a 1/5-second chronograph second hand that does not return to zero after a reset. Citizen B620 instruction manual.

Citizen H50: chronograph second hand
- Pull the crown out to position 2.
- Hold upper-right button B for at least three seconds to make the chronograph second hand adjustable.
- Press B repeatedly to move the hand in one-second increments, or hold B to move it continuously.
- Push the crown in to finish, then adjust the time.
This operation temporarily stops the watch, so Citizen instructs owners to set the time afterward. The chronograph minute hand is adjusted separately: press lower-right button A repeatedly until it points to zero. Citizen H50 instruction manual.
Citizen 0580
- Pull the crown out to position 2.
- Use button B to set the chronograph second hand to zero and button A to set the 1/20-second hand.
- Reset the time, return the crown to position 0, and press A to verify the zero position.
The manual notes that the hands may miss zero after battery replacement and may move slightly after a strong shock. Citizen 0580 instruction manual.
Citizen 0520
- Pull the crown out to the time-correction position.
- Use button B to position the chronograph second hand at zero. Holding B advances it rapidly.
- Reset the time and return the crown to its normal position.
- Press A to check the chronograph hands.

- After correction, use the normal reset again and check that the hand returns to its reference mark.
- If the procedure stopped the watch, check and reset the time as directed by that caliber’s manual.
- If the hand does not respond as described, the problem returns, or the watch shows physical damage, stop trying sequences and contact the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker. Do not open the case or repeat an unverified procedure.
- If moisture has entered the watch, or crystal fogging does not clear within a day, Citizen’s 0580 manual directs owners to a dealer or Citizen Service Center. Citizen 0580 instruction manual.
Choose between owner adjustment and service

A watch’s visual resemblance to one of these examples is not enough to select a correction sequence. The cited manuals do not establish universal repair costs or success rates, so those should be assessed for the specific watch and fault.
