If your Citizen Eco-Drive has stopped, its power reserve may be too low. Put the dial in direct sunlight, then follow the charging instructions for your exact watch model. Citizen says the time needed to restart varies by model, so there is no reliable universal charging duration. If it still will not run after the prescribed charge, contact a Citizen service center.
First, check whether the watch has actually stopped
On a chronograph, the long central hand may be the stopwatch hand. It can remain still when the chronograph is not timing even while the watch keeps time. Check the dial layout and your model’s manual before treating a stationary hand as a failure. Citizen’s FAQ explains this distinction.

If the whole watch is stopped, or the timekeeping seconds hand is behaving abnormally, insufficient charge is the first thing to address. Citizen’s stopped-watch guidance says to expose the dial to direct sunlight and consult the manual because the charge time from stopped to normal operation varies by model.
Charge it safely using the instructions for your model
- Identify the watch. Find its model or caliber information and locate the matching Citizen instruction manual. Charging time and any recovery steps can differ between movements.
- Expose the dial to direct sunlight. Keep the watch where it can receive light, and use the manual’s charging guidance to determine how long to charge it. Do not assume that a duration recommended for another Eco-Drive model applies to yours.
- Keep it away from excessive heat. Do not leave the watch in a hot car or place it close to a heat-emitting lamp. Citizen’s F990 charging instructions warn against charging that caliber at about 60°C/140°F or higher. That threshold is specific to the F990 instructions, not a universal limit for every Eco-Drive.
- Check its movement after charging. If it resumes normal operation, set the time if needed. If it remains stopped, shows an error, or does not respond as the manual describes, use the troubleshooting and service guidance for that caliber.
What a two-second jump means
Some Eco-Drive models signal low charge by moving the seconds hand in two-second intervals instead of one-second intervals. On models with this feature, it is a low-charge warning—not proof by itself that the rechargeable cell has failed. Citizen says normal movement should return after sufficient charging. See its FAQ on low-charge hand movement and check your own manual to confirm the feature applies to your watch.

If the watch stopped and later restarted, its displayed time may need correcting. Follow the manual’s setting instructions rather than assuming the watch will automatically show the right time after charging.
Why it may stop, even though it is solar-powered
Not enough stored charge
Eco-Drive watches use light as their power source and store energy in a rechargeable cell. Long periods in darkness or too little light can leave the reserve too low for normal operation. Direct sunlight and the model’s charging instructions are the appropriate first steps.

A reset or reference-position correction may be required
Some calibers call for a reset or hand-position correction as part of recovery. The steps are movement-specific. For example, the B8120 manual specifies a charge-level condition before reset and reference-position correction, and directs the owner to a store or Citizen service center if “ERR” appears again. This is an example for that movement, not a procedure to apply to other Eco-Drive watches.
It may need service after charging
If the watch remains stopped after the charge prescribed in its manual, Citizen advises contacting a service center. There is no single component-level explanation that can be established for every caliber from the symptom alone. Citizen also notes that, with prolonged use, dirt in the gears or depleted lubrication can increase current consumption and shorten run time; this is a maintenance concern for service, not a reason to install an ordinary disposable battery. See Citizen’s cell and battery guidance.

Why an ordinary battery replacement is not the first fix
Eco-Drive watches use rechargeable cells, not the ordinary non-rechargeable batteries used in many conventional watches. Citizen says these cells do not require routine replacement. A stopped watch should therefore be charged according to its manual first; do not ask for or attempt an ordinary battery substitution as a generic Eco-Drive fix. If charging does not restore operation, have the watch assessed by Citizen service.

- The watch still does not move after the model-prescribed charging procedure.
- A model-specific error remains or returns after following the manual.
- The manual’s reset or reference-position instructions do not restore normal operation.
Use Citizen’s service information for your region to find an authorized service destination. Avoid opening the case as a first-line repair: Citizen warns that dust or debris can get inside and water resistance may be impaired. Its maintenance guidance explains this risk.
