A Citizen Eco-Drive watch that stops in darkness may be conserving power, or its stored charge may have run down. Put the dial in bright light and let it recharge; if the watch was fully depleted and does not resume normal operation, follow the reset procedure for its exact caliber. Darkness alone does not mean the watch is broken.
Why an Eco-Drive watch can stop in darkness
Eco-Drive watches convert natural or artificial light into energy and store it in a power reserve. A fully charged watch can continue running in darkness for months, but reserve duration varies by model. Some movements also have a power-save feature that stops the hands after the watch has been left in darkness; when light returns, the hands may move forward to catch up. Feature availability and reserve duration are model-specific. Citizen’s Eco-Drive technology information describes more than six months in darkness for a fully powered watch and up to seven years for selected power-save models, not a guarantee for every watch.

A separate clue is the second hand moving in two-second intervals. On models with this indicator, it signals insufficient charge. If the watch is not recharged, it may eventually stop. The timing depends on the movement: for example, the B620 manual says that movement can become depleted and stop if it is not charged for eight days or longer after the warning begins. That interval applies to the B620, not to all Eco-Drive calibers. Citizen Watch US Support explains the low-charge warning and charging.

Identify what the watch is doing
| What you see | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The hands stopped after the watch was left in darkness | A power-save feature may have stopped the hands, if the movement has that feature; the watch may also have run out of stored charge. | Expose the dial to bright light and allow time to recharge. Check the caliber’s manual for its power-save behavior. |
| The second hand advances in two-second intervals | Insufficient charge warning on models with this indicator. | Charge the watch according to the movement’s manual. |
| The watch remains stopped or behaves abnormally after charging | A reset may be needed after depletion, or there may be another model-specific issue. | Use the exact caliber’s reset instructions. If the problem remains, contact Citizen service. |
Recharge it with bright light
Place the watch so the dial receives bright light. Citizen says direct sunlight is the fastest and most efficient source in its general guidance for basic analog Eco-Drive watches. The published times below are Citizen estimates, not independent test results or universal instructions: charging needs vary with movement and light intensity. Use the watch’s manual for its specific requirements. Citizen’s charging guidance gives these examples:

- 3 Hand, Date
- Silver-Tone Stainless Steel
- Sapphire Crystal, Blue Dial
- 100 Meters Water Resistant and 5 Year Limited Warranty
| Light conditions in Citizen’s estimate | Charge for one day of use | Time to full charge |
|---|---|---|
| Sunny outdoors, 100,000 lux | 2 minutes | 11 hours |
| Cloudy outdoors, 10,000 lux | 12 minutes | 40 hours |
| 30W fluorescent light, 8 inches away, 3,000 lux | 40 minutes | 130 hours |
These figures are for basic analog models; do not assume they are sufficient for a different movement or for a watch that has been fully depleted. As a model-specific example, Citizen’s B620 manual recommends placing the dial where it receives bright light, such as near a window, and advises five to six hours of direct sunlight at least once a month for optimal performance. It also cautions against charging at about 60°C (140°F) or higher. That schedule and temperature caution are B620 manual guidance, not a universal schedule for every Eco-Drive watch. Find the caliber before resetting
The caliber number is engraved on the case back. Use it to find the matching Citizen manual and setting instructions; they specify the correct charging requirements, reset steps, and any hand-alignment or time-and-date settings needed afterward. Citizen’s Manuals & Setting Instructions lets owners look up guidance by model or caliber.

If a fully recharged watch still does not operate normally, Citizen says a reset may be needed after a low- or no-charge condition. The procedure depends on the movement. Citizen’s support guidance gives these examples for basic models:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Basic two- or three-hand model without a date or special functions: pull the crown out one click and leave it out for 30 seconds, then push it fully back in. Reset the time if needed.
- Day/date model: pull the crown out two clicks and leave it out for 30 seconds, then push it fully back in. Reset the time and date as needed.
These examples are not for every Eco-Drive. Multifunction movements—including perpetual-calendar, dive, chronograph, Skyhawk, world-time, and satellite models—require their own procedures. Do not use the basic crown steps on those watches; follow the manual for the caliber. Citizen’s reset guidance explains the model distinctions.

If it still will not restart
- Check the case-back caliber and open the matching Citizen manual.
- Charge the watch using the manual’s instructions and allow the stated time for the movement and light conditions.
- If it was fully depleted, perform only the reset procedure specified for that caliber, then set the time and date as directed.
- If it remains stopped or behaves abnormally, use Citizen’s official support and repair route.
A stopped watch alone does not establish that its internal cell or circuit has failed. Identify the movement and complete its prescribed charging and reset steps before seeking service.
