A dive watch can be one of the most useful and distinctive watches in a collection: its clear display and elapsed-time indicator grew from practical underwater needs, while its bold, functional design works well beyond the water. It is not a universal requirement, but it offers a compelling contrast to dress, field and minimalist watches.
What makes a watch a dive watch?
A dive watch is more than a watch with a water-resistance figure printed on its dial or case. The relevant international standard is ISO 6425:2018, which specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches and saturation-diving watches. Its scope covers watches designed for at least 100 metres and equipped with a secured diving-time indicator that can be seen in darkness. ISO says the 2018 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024, and remains current.
That distinction matters when judging a watch for actual diving. ISO’s consumer guidance separates ISO 22810, which covers water-resistant watches for everyday use and swimming, from ISO 6425, which applies to watches intended for scuba diving. A water-resistance label by itself does not establish ISO 6425 conformity.
Citizen’s explanation similarly describes diver’s watches as meeting criteria beyond water resistance, including readability, magnetic and shock resistance, and strap strength. That is the manufacturer’s account of the standard; for a specific watch, check the maker’s exact conformity claim and instructions.

Why a dive watch works in a collection
It has a clear design purpose
Large, legible markers and a straightforward elapsed-time display are not merely stylistic conventions: they reflect the need to read time clearly and track it in an underwater setting. The design has a functional origin even when the watch is worn on dry land.
It adds visual contrast
A dive watch’s more assertive, tool-oriented appearance gives a collection a different character from a slim dress watch, a field watch or a minimalist everyday piece. That contrast can make a small collection feel more varied without requiring every watch to serve the same occasion.

- The waterproof level of this watch has reached 10 ATM waterproof, which can work normally at a depth of 100 meters (330ft) underwater. It is not only suitable for wearing in water activities such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, surfing, rowing, water skiing, but also suitable for wearing in daily life and outdoor sports, such as jogging, hiking, climbing, cycling, etc.
- The built-in stopwatch and timer function of the watch can meet the precise timing needs of exercise and sports competitions.
- The dual time zone display function will make your trips more convenient; 12/24 hour format display can meet the time reading habits of different people.
- Support multiple useful functions, such as: alarm clock, hourly chime, calendar and back light.
- The watch battery is replaceable. If you find that the watch is not working or the text on the display is not clear, please replace the watch battery in time.
Its history is function-led
The category has continued to develop around practical uses. In its official history of the Scuba Master, Seiko describes a watch with water and depth sensors that displayed diving time and depth. It is a useful example of how underwater functions have shaped the category, rather than a claim that all dive watches have those capabilities.
Does 100 metres of water resistance mean it is suitable for diving?
Not necessarily. ISO 6425’s scope includes a minimum design depth of 100 metres, but that threshold does not mean every watch labelled “100 m” has been shown to conform to the standard. The rating and a statement of ISO conformity are different claims.

PADI’s consumer gear guidance says a good sports dive watch has a depth rating of at least 100 metres. Treat that as PADI’s general guidance, not as proof that a particular 100-metre-rated watch is ISO-certified. If you plan to use a watch underwater, verify the maker’s specific diving-use guidance and any stated ISO 6425 conformity.
What a dive watch can—and cannot—do underwater
A dive watch’s elapsed-time indication offers a legible way to track time, but a watch alone should not be treated as a replacement for dive training or a modern dive computer. The sources cited here do not establish that a wristwatch supplies the information or safety functions needed to plan and conduct a dive. For underwater use, follow qualified training and the equipment maker’s instructions.

- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106B is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106B features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
Is it a must-have for every collection?
No watch category is essential for every collector. A dive watch makes a strong case when you value an easy-to-read, function-led design and want a recognizable counterpoint to other styles. Its appeal rests on the combination of practical origins, a distinctive visual language and everyday versatility—not on a rule that every collection must include one.
