A stopped solar watch often needs more light, not an immediate repair. Put it in the light as its manufacturer directs, then check whether it resumes. Charge times and restart steps vary by model; if it still will not run after adequate charging, contact the manufacturer’s service center.
First, give it light and time to recharge
Solar watches use a cell beneath the dial to convert light into energy stored in a rechargeable battery. If the watch has spent a long time under a sleeve or in a dark drawer, its stored energy may have run low. Seiko notes that both light intensity and exposure time affect charging: its published examples are about 100,000 lx in direct summer sunlight, 10,000 lx on a cloudy day, and 700 lx under general office lighting. Room light is therefore much weaker than sunlight and may take longer to recharge a watch. Seiko’s explanation of solar charging.

For a completely stopped Seiko, the general FAQ recommends placing the watch by a window in sunlight for 5–6 hours before using it again. That duration is Seiko’s guidance for this FAQ, not a universal charging time for all solar watches. Citizen likewise recommends direct sunlight for a stopped Eco-Drive, but says the time needed depends on the model. Check the manual for the exact charging instructions for your watch. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep the watch away from places that can become extremely hot while it charges. Seiko warns that high temperatures can damage components or cause malfunctions; prolonged sunlight can also damage or discolor leather and urethane bands. Avoid leaving the watch on a car dashboard or another hot surface. Seiko’s energy-prevention guidance.

Check whether it is in power-save mode
On some models, stationary hands do not mean the watch has stopped keeping time. A power-save function can halt the hands after inadequate light while the movement continues to track time and calendar internally. Citizen says that exposing the dial to light may automatically end power save and move the hands to the current time. Not every model has this feature, so consult its manual. Citizen’s explanation of power save.
Some Seiko models use specific second-hand positions to indicate power-save states: 15 seconds for Power Save 1, which Seiko says begins after 72 hours without sufficient light, and 45 seconds for Power Save 2 after an extended insufficient-charge state. On supported models, sufficient light for at least five seconds can trigger a rapid hand advance to the current time in the first state. For the second, Seiko advises recharging sufficiently and resetting the time if necessary. These positions and behaviors are model-specific, not universal indicators for solar watches. Seiko’s explanation of second-hand indications.

Read the hand movement as a low-charge clue
On relevant Seiko calibers, a second hand moving in two-second intervals indicates that stored energy is extremely low. Follow the charging guidance in the watch’s manual rather than assuming the movement has failed. This signal is specific to the calibers Seiko describes; other brands and models may indicate low charge differently. Seiko’s troubleshooting guidance.
If charging does not restart the watch
Use the watch’s own manual to confirm its charging duration and restart or time-setting steps. If the watch remains stopped after the recommended exposure, Citizen advises taking it to a service center. Avoid guessing at a replacement rechargeable battery or repair procedure: the appropriate part and process depend on the model. Citizen’s service guidance.

Reduce the chance it will stop again
Regular light exposure helps prevent stored energy from running low. As a general guideline for its watches, Seiko recommends a monthly 5–6-hour exposure by a window. A sleeve that covers the watch and long periods of storage away from light can contribute to depletion; Seiko also notes that energy may run low more easily in autumn and winter. Use the instructions for your own model if they differ. Seiko’s prevention advice and Seiko’s charging explanation.
