Audemars Piguet watches are expensive because their prices reflect specialist mechanical watchmaking and finishing, design and brand history, and, depending on the reference, costly materials or complex complications. The Royal Oak’s influential design and sustained demand also add to its market position. Those factors explain the price; they do not mean every AP costs the same to make, is equally scarce, or will rise in value.
What the price pays for
There is no public, model-by-model breakdown showing how much of an Audemars Piguet watch’s retail price comes from labor, materials, research, or brand value. It is more accurate to think of the price as a combination of specialist craft, engineering, design, materials, and desirability than as a simple sum of metal and labor.

Specialist watchmaking and finishing
Audemars Piguet’s history is rooted in complicated mechanical watchmaking. Its founders established the company in Le Brassus in 1875 and coordinated work among specialists in the Vallée de Joux. The company’s history and watchmaking pages describe skills used to create and finish mechanical movements, including hand-fitting components and work on chiming mechanisms, chronographs, and astronomical complications. Audemars Piguet’s account of its origins and its watchmaking savoir-faire explain the tradition behind that work.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese are skilled, detailed processes, but they do not establish the labor cost or production time of every watch. As one specific example, AP says development of the oscillating weight for the Royal Oak 50th-anniversary collection took six months, followed by a ten-stage production process. That is an example tied to a particular component and collection, not a standard timetable for the entire catalog. AP’s account of the craft process describes the example.

Design and the Royal Oak’s history
The Royal Oak is central to the brand’s recognition. Introduced in 1972 as a high-end steel sports watch, it made a striking design statement and helped define that category. Its distinctive design, long history, and continuing place in the collection contribute to its desirability—and to the wider brand’s market position. Those qualities matter to buyers, but public information does not assign them a separate, measurable share of the price.
AP’s Royal Oak collection history traces the model’s origins and design context. The question of price is not new: an AP archive entry preserves a 1974 retailer brochure that asked, “Why is Audemars Piguet the costliest watch in the world?” The archive gives historical context, not evidence about how today’s prices are calculated. AP’s archive records the brochure.

Materials and complications differ by reference
Not every AP uses the same case material, movement, or complication. The collection includes precious metals and specialized materials such as forged carbon; AP records the launch of a colored forged-carbon material in 2024. More involved complications also require different engineering and expertise. For example, AP describes its Grande Complication watches as demanding a high level of skill and precision.

A meaningful comparison should look at the exact collection and reference, movement and complications, case and bracelet materials, and construction and finishing—not simply the brand name. AP’s materials library and Grande Complication collection page describe those categories.

Does scarcity make AP watches expensive?
Scarcity and demand can support desirability, but claims about production need careful context. AP’s historical account says the original Royal Oak was produced in quantities of up to 1,000 units. That figure concerns the original model in its historical context; it is not a current annual production total and does not show how many units of a present-day reference are made. AP’s Royal Oak numbering history discusses the early quantities and the challenge of preserving a sense of rarity at that scale.
The sources cited here do not establish AP’s current annual output, allocations by reference, or boutique waiting times. A watch’s reputation for being difficult to obtain should not be treated as proof of a particular production limit or a guaranteed premium.

Are Audemars Piguet watches worth the price on the resale market?
Retail price and resale price are different questions. A 2025 WatchCharts/Morgan Stanley analysis, reproduced by Quill & Pad, found that in-production AP models averaged 1.3% below retail. The same analysis said many Royal Oak models traded above retail and that 61% of the broader AP catalog models in its analysis were above retail. These are dated, report-specific findings—not figures for every AP watch or a forecast of future prices. The 2Q 2025 report summary explains the analysis.

Resale results depend on the exact reference and the date of sale, and a premium on some models does not establish that buying an AP is a reliable investment. Audemars Piguet CEO Ilaria Resta, describing an icon, told Wallpaper* that it “can survive the test of time; the test of materials and taste, and can live forever.” That is her characterization of the design’s longevity, not evidence of financial return. Wallpaper*’s interview gives the context for her comment.

How to judge the price of a specific AP
For an actual buying decision, compare the exact reference rather than relying on a general claim about the brand. Check the watch’s movement and complications, case and bracelet materials, finishing and construction, and the date and location of any quoted retail or resale price. Current reference-level prices and availability should be confirmed with a current official listing or authorized seller; they are not established by the historical and market sources cited here.
