He chose it for a mix of personal preferences—especially legibility, movement visibility and bracelet finishing—not because sapphire is the right Moonwatch for everyone. Hesalite remained appealing to him for its domed look and space-program associations.
Which Speedmaster did Hodges buy?
The watch was the 42 mm stainless-steel Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, reference 310.30.42.50.01.002. Omega’s Hong Kong regional product sheet lists a sapphire front crystal, a transparent caseback and the manual-winding calibre 3861. The movement is described as Master Chronometer certified, approved by METAS and resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. Omega also lists a 20 mm lug width, 50-hour power reserve and water resistance of 5 bar (50 metres / 165 feet). Omega product sheet for reference 310.30.42.50.01.002.
Those specifications identify the model; the reasons for buying it belong to Hodges’s own account, published in 2021. He had owned an FOiS and saw the new Moonwatch as a way to retain features he liked while gaining changes that mattered to him. Hodges’s 2021 account.
What made the sapphire version the choice for him?
A dial he found easier to read
Hodges valued the applied Omega logo, stepped dial and white baton hands, which he felt improved legibility. That is a personal assessment of the watch’s appearance and readability, rather than a claim that every owner will find it easier to read.

A view of the calibre 3861
The transparent caseback was a major part of the appeal: it lets the wearer see the movement. Hodges also wanted hacking seconds, a feature he valued in the updated calibre 3861. The sapphire model thus gave him both a visible movement and a function he had wanted.
More detail in the bracelet
In his description, the five-link bracelet tapers from 20 mm at the lugs to a 15 mm clasp, has female end links, and includes polished decorative inlays on the sapphire version. He liked the visual depth those polished details added. He contrasted it with the fully brushed bracelet option on the Hesalite model. These are observations from his 2021 account, not a universal verdict on which finish is better.

Why not choose Hesalite?
Hodges still preferred Hesalite’s domed appearance and felt it carried a stronger connection to the Moonwatch’s space-program history. His practical reasoning was that, in his view, replacing a sapphire front with Hesalite later would be easier than adding a sapphire display back to the Hesalite model. That was his way of resolving a trade-off, not a general recommendation about modifying either watch.
Another Fratello writer in 2021 chose Hesalite for its historical feel and the way it magnified the dial, while acknowledging the sapphire model’s advantage of a transparent caseback. For a buyer deciding today, the useful questions are whether a scratch-resistant front crystal matters more than Hesalite’s appearance, whether seeing the movement is valuable, and which dial and bracelet details look right on the wrist. Compare current local pricing rather than relying on figures from 2021. Omega’s linked product sheet is regional, so confirm the exact configuration offered in your market.
How the purchase happened
The buying experience was part of the story. After selling his FOiS, Hodges waited for UK non-essential shops to reopen so he could buy in person, have the bracelet sized and enjoy the retail experience. That context helps explain why this was more than a specification-led upgrade: he was choosing a watch and the experience of acquiring it.

Who might prefer each version?
- The sapphire version may suit you if you want a visible calibre 3861, value the applied-logo dial and prefer sapphire’s scratch resistance and polished bracelet details.
- The Hesalite version may suit you if its domed look, dial-magnifying effect or historical associations matter more than a display caseback and sapphire front.
Hodges’s purchase makes sense on his terms: he sold the FOiS for a Moonwatch that, to him, combined preferred styling with a visible movement and useful changes. A buyer who values Hesalite’s look more highly can reach the opposite conclusion without either choice being wrong.
