The Jasper KM Lite is a telling first example: KEEN and outdoor publication Field Mag frame it as an everyday shoe with outdoor design cues, suited to both mountain-town and urban wardrobes. That is a strategic choice, not proof that most KEEN shoes are now made in America.
Why begin with a lifestyle shoe?
Field Mag reported in May 2026 that the Jasper KM Lite Sneaker and KM Lite Mary Jane were among the lifestyle styles being made in the United States. Its explanation for the Jasper’s role is practical: the familiar, versatile shape can reach people who want outdoor-influenced everyday style, rather than only shoppers looking for a technical hiking shoe or work boot. That makes it a lower-risk way to introduce domestic production to lifestyle customers, according to Field Mag. No sales or profitability figures were reported to establish how well the strategy is performing.

The Jasper story sits alongside, rather than replaces, KEEN’s American Built work and hiking range. In September 2025, KEEN listed about 20 American Built styles; that was a dated snapshot, not a guaranteed current count. Field Mag said four Made models were being produced in Kentucky at the time of its May 2026 report, while noting that most of KEEN’s catalogue, including many popular styles, was still made overseas. The two counts describe different moments and scopes.

KEEN says it opened its footwear factory in Portland, Oregon, in 2009. In 2025, it moved U.S. footwear production to a larger facility in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The company says the new site is intended to grow U.S. production, with its September 2025 announcement describing a goal of doubling it. KEEN has also cited faster shipping as a reason for the move.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
KEEN’s account of the original decision emphasizes control over production. Don Wicks, the company’s senior director of North American manufacturing, said: “It’s important for KEEN to have its own factory, so we can control the quality of our product. We can control when we build it. How we build it. Who we get it to.” The company describes the Kentucky operation as combining skilled workers, robotics, prototyping, inspection and testing.
Proximity also matters to the shipping rationale. KEEN said 85% of mailing addresses were reachable within two days from the Kentucky operation, as part of its 2025 explanation of the move. That is the company’s description of reach and shipping speed, not a delivery guarantee for every order or destination.

What “made in America” means for KEEN Made
KEEN describes KEEN Made footwear as built in Kentucky using responsibly sourced materials from around the world. The manufacturing location is domestic; the description does not mean that every material or component is American-sourced. KEEN’s American Built information also discusses features such as leather sourcing, KEEN.DRY and toe-room design, but those product attributes should not be confused with a claim that all inputs originate in the United States.

In a 2025 Retail TouchPoints interview, KEEN COO Nick Perumal estimated that U.S. footwear labor costs were 10 to 12 times those in Asian countries. He also described retailer interest in American-built footwear, saying: “The (Keen) head of sales always said ‘Made in America’ is important. I’ve gone on several retail tours with our sales folks and the resounding answer is yes, retailers want American built, even if (the boots) cost something like $300.” These are management’s account and estimate, not an independent labor-cost study or proof of consumer demand for the Jasper.

How large is domestic production today?
KEEN’s 2025 impact report says its three owned factories—in the United States, the Dominican Republic and Thailand—made 27% of everything the company produced. It also reports a contract-manufacturing network of 20 manufacturers in eight countries. The 27% figure covers all three owned factories globally; it is not the U.S. factory’s share, and it does not establish what percentage of KEEN footwear is made in Kentucky.
That context matters when reading the lifestyle launch as a sign of change. KEEN is building U.S. capacity and adding lifestyle products to domestic production, but its own figures show a global manufacturing system in which contract factories remain part of the picture.

What the move could—and could not—mean for emissions
KEEN estimated that relocating production could reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 2,800 tons through shipping alone. The company also said more than 97% of its greenhouse-gas footprint in 2025 came from supply-chain activity. The shipping estimate is therefore one piece of the footprint question, not a verified lifecycle reduction for the Jasper KM Lite or for every shoe made in Kentucky. It does not account, by itself, for all material, manufacturing and end-of-life impacts.
KEEN’s impact report states a target to reduce emissions per thousand pairs by 45% by 2033. That company-wide target is distinct from the relocation estimate and should not be read as a measured result of the Kentucky factory move.

What KEEN.FUSION changes in the shoe
KEEN describes KEEN.FUSION as a process that joins the sole to the upper using heat and pressure instead of glue. The company presents it as a manufacturing method used at its facilities, not as a feature found throughout its range: its impact report says just over 10% of KEEN shoes used KEEN.FUSION in 2025.
The distinction is useful because a shoe’s U.S. assembly and its bonding process are separate facts. A KEEN Made label identifies the production story; it does not imply that every KEEN shoe uses KEEN.FUSION. KEEN’s American Built page separately states that every KEEN shoe is made without PFAS, while its impact report estimates that nearly 106,000 kilograms of intentionally added PFAS had been eliminated since the transition began in 2014. That quantity is the company’s estimate over the period, not a per-shoe measurement.
What the Jasper launch signals
Starting with a lifestyle silhouette broadens the audience for KEEN’s U.S. manufacturing effort beyond shoppers seeking work or hiking gear. It also lets the company attach a visible, everyday product to its Kentucky operation. But the available figures support a measured conclusion: this is an expansion of domestic production into lifestyle footwear, not a wholesale shift of KEEN’s catalogue to the United States. The Jasper’s significance is the category it brings into the factory, while the scale of that change will depend on how much production KEEN ultimately places there.
