Why Many Watch Dials Use IIII Instead of IV

IIII is a long-standing dial convention, but no cited source establishes who first chose it or a single reason it endured.

Many watch and clock dials use IIII for four instead of the more familiar IV. IIII is a valid additive form with a long history, and dial design offers plausible reasons for its persistence. The available sources do not establish who first chose it for a clock or watch—or prove one definitive reason why.

What does the watchmaker’s four mean?

It is the use of IIII, an additive form of the Roman numeral four, where a dial could instead use IV, the subtractive form. On a dial that uses Roman numerals, IIII is a convention, not a mistake.

Why was IIII available as a form of four?

The Foundation of Haute Horlogerie (FHH) explains that Roman numerals in antiquity were generally written additively: IIII for four and VIIII for nine, for example. The subtractive principle, which gives forms such as IV, appeared during the Imperial period. FHH says subtractive forms were rarely used on official inscriptions, monuments or sundials, although there were exceptions. FHH’s horology encyclopedia traces how both numeral forms could be part of the broader tradition.

FHH places the arrival of striking clocks at the end of the thirteenth century and says watchmakers began giving clocks dials in the fifteenth century. Roman numerals were already familiar, including from sundials. This history helps explain why IIII was an available choice, but it does not identify the first dialmaker to use it.

Why might a dial retain IIII?

FHH gives several design explanations. They make IIII plausible as a continuing convention, but do not establish a single original motive.

  • Visual balance: IIII can balance visually against VIII on the opposite side of a dial.
  • Grouping the hours: The numerals can be read as three runs of four: I–IIII, V–VIII and IX–XII.
  • Legibility on radiant dials: On some designs, numerals angle inward toward the centre. FHH suggests IV may be harder to read in that arrangement.

These are design considerations, not rules that every dial must follow. Choosing IV instead is also a valid design decision.

Are the stories about Jupiter and French kings true?

Stories connect IIII to a belief that IV would offend Jupiter, or to royal preferences attributed to Charles V and Louis XIV. Daan de Groot’s 2022 account in Fratello treats these explanations skeptically: they are not confirmed by the sources cited, and IIII appears to predate the monarchs invoked in the stories.

The same article considers whether IIII was chosen for accessibility, but notes a problem with applying that idea consistently: additive notation would also suggest VIIII for nine, which is not the usual form on these dials. These theories may be repeated as legends or proposals, not as established origins.

Is there one correct form?

Dial choice Numeral principle Design consideration
IIII Additive: four ones Can balance VIII, support groups of four hours, and suit some inward-facing radiant layouts.
IV Subtractive: one before five A familiar alternative; its appearance and legibility depend on the dial design.

The trade-offs do not establish that either form is universally correct. A conventional 12-hour dial using IIII also has 14 Roman-numeral characters on each vertical half when the characters are counted; this is an illustrative design observation, not a published statistical finding.

What can be said about the origin?

The strongest conclusion is a modest one: IIII had historical precedent, and visual balance or legibility may help explain why it persisted on dials. Neither point proves who made the first choice or what decisive motive lay behind it. As de Groot concludes in his April 22, 2022 article, there is no definitive answer for why many dials show IIII rather than IV.
