The moment, recounted by Kenyon, captures the watch’s appeal: a distinctive Soviet-era design that another collector recognized without prompting—not proof that the model is rare or valuable.
What made the Copernic a collector’s conversation starter?
In his first-person account published by Time+Tide on 21 May 2020, Kenyon describes meeting Hodge at Dubai Watch Week the previous year. Hodge recognized the watch on Kenyon’s wrist; Kenyon replied that it was an old Raketa Copernic he had picked up the year before, and Hodge said he had one too. It is a small, personal encounter, but a satisfying kind of collector recognition: the object is unusual enough to invite a question, and familiar enough to another enthusiast to be identified.
Kenyon’s story is about that exchange and the watch’s design, not a documented scarcity claim. He explicitly wrote that vintage Copernics “aren’t rare by any means.” His description of finding one for a “great price” was his opinion in 2020, not current buying or valuation guidance. Read Kenyon’s account at Time+Tide.
What is a Raketa Copernic watch?
The Copernic is a Raketa watch whose design is linked to Nicolaus Copernicus, the Polish astronomer and mathematician. Time+Tide describes the original as a Soviet-era release commemorating Copernicus. That origin story is the publication’s account; the cited coverage does not provide a primary historical document establishing the release context.

Why the hands look different
The signature feature is a pair of unusually shaped hands. In Kenyon’s explanation, the minute hand represents the moon and the hour hand represents the sun; as they move, the hour hand eclipses the minute hand once an hour. The motif turns the passage of time into a small, readable celestial scene, rather than relying on ordinary straight hands.
That interpretation is Kenyon’s description of the design, not a quotation from Raketa or a historical source. It is also the key to why the watch stands out: the hands are functional, but their interaction gives the dial a story collectors can recognize and discuss.

How is the modern Copernic different from the vintage original?
Raketa later reinterpreted the Copernic. Time+Tide’s 2019 introduction describes a 40.5 mm case and calibre 2615, with a golden-orb hour hand as the sun, a hollow silver-ring minute hand as the moon, and a blue-and-black gradient dial. It reports accuracy of −10/+20 seconds per day, 40 hours of power reserve, and a launch price of €1,150. That price is a historical launch figure reported in 2019, not a current market quote or a statement of present availability. See the 2019 modern-model introduction at Time+Tide.
Kenyon’s 2020 account describes the modern re-release somewhat differently: a larger blackened-steel case and red dial highlights, set against the original’s more pared-back, rougher character. These are descriptions from two Time+Tide articles, not a single definitive specification. The 2019 piece also reports that Raketa consulted cosmonaut Alexander Ivanchenko on the modern dial; that detail is publication reporting, not separately confirmed here.

Which one should a buyer look for?
The choice is between period character and a later interpretation, not simply “old” versus “new.” The vintage original offers the historical look Kenyon wore; the modern version has its own case, dial treatment, and reported movement specifications. The available coverage does not establish current pricing, market availability, condition, or service history for either.

- Period character: Decide whether the original’s simpler, rougher appearance or the modern model’s more contemporary treatment is the point for you.
- Dimensions and finish: The modern version was reported at 40.5 mm in 2019; the cited sources do not provide comparable dimensions for Kenyon’s vintage watch.
- Movement and condition: The 2019 article identifies calibre 2615 for the modern interpretation. It gives no equivalent movement or condition details for Kenyon’s individual vintage example.
- Originality and service: For a vintage listing, ask for clear photographs, evidence of originality, and service documentation where available. The cited articles do not verify any particular example.
- Price and seller evidence: Compare the actual watch, its condition, provenance, and seller information. Neither article supplies current transaction data, so neither supports a present-day valuation.
