Accounts offer two explanations: one ties the watches to his two daughters; another says he kept local time and Argentina time visible while traveling. The personal explanation: a watch for each daughter
Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe told watch publication Time+Tide that Maradona said he wore two watches because he had two daughters. Guadalupe also recalled that the watches were engraved with each daughter’s name. This is Guadalupe recounting a conversation, not a recording or direct published statement from Maradona. Time+Tide’s report also identifies Hublot models associated with Maradona, including a Big Bang Gold Ceramic “Maradona edition” and a Big Bang Sapphire with baguette diamonds; Guadalupe said Hublot gave him two of the latter.

The practical explanation: Argentina time and local time
TyC Sports gives a different account: one watch showed the time where Maradona was, while the other showed Argentina time, keeping him connected to home and family. The outlet places the habit in his Napoli playing period, though its article does not identify a direct first-hand source for that explanation. TyC Sports’ account is consistent with a 2010 TIME article, which attributes the same travel explanation to Yahoo Sports rather than to Maradona himself. TIME’s 2010 report therefore documents an earlier version of the story, not independent confirmation from Maradona.
What the accounts establish—and what they do not
The explanations are not necessarily incompatible: the watches could have carried personal meaning while also serving a timekeeping purpose. But the reporting available does not settle whether either account was the sole reason, whether both applied, or exactly when the habit began.

Infobae’s 2024 report relays Maradona’s brother Raúl Alfredo “Lalo” Maradona saying Diego described one watch as showing local time and the other Argentina time. It also reports former teammate Oscar Ruggeri saying Maradona asked for two identical watches when buying one. Because the original page was not independently available for verification here, these details should be treated as reported accounts rather than decisive proof. Infobae’s report adds context but does not resolve the competing explanations.
