His 2020 award-winning graduation watch established the first; Fading Hours, the debut watch from Tokyo-based Quiet Club, puts the second on display. Its place among the finalists for the 2025–2026 Louis Vuitton Watch Prize adds meaningful recognition, though it is not a guarantee of future success.
Who is Norifumi Seki?
Seki is a Japanese independent watchmaker based in Tokyo and Head of Watchmaking at Quiet Club. In a 2024 interview with MONOCHROME Watches, he traced his interest in watchmaking to his teenage years. After buying a watch with money from a part-time job, he began wondering how it worked. A documentary about Japanese independent watchmaker Masahiro Kikuno also showed him that one person could make a watch.
Seki researched the craft, bought a book by George Daniels and enrolled at Hiko Mizuno Watchmaking School in Tokyo. After his studies, he spent about three and a half years at a vintage watch shop, gaining experience repairing and restoring different kinds of watches. That background helps explain the practical streak in his work: unusual displays and mechanisms are not just visual flourishes, but attempts to make a watch function in a distinctive way.
What did Seki win in 2020?
Seki won the 2020 F.P. Journe Young Talent Competition with his graduation project, a pocket watch featuring a spherical moon-phase display and a vertically rotating drum calendar. The official competition document identifies him as 23 and records his graduation from Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry in March 2020.

The design tackled practical layout challenges. Seki explained in his 2024 interview that a large flat moon disc would take up too much dial space, so he used a sphere to make the moon-phase indication both prominent and workable. The two-part sphere used different materials; the calendar replaced conventional discs with a drum. The competition document also notes challenges with the vertical calendar’s operation and with redesigning and manufacturing the balance wheel.
The movement was not wholly built from scratch: Seki said about half of it was based on a Valjoux 7750, while he made the balance wheel and other components himself. That distinction does not diminish the achievement. The project shows an early ability to adapt existing watchmaking architecture while developing original solutions for the parts that mattered to the design.

How does Fading Hours show that same inventiveness?
Quiet Club is a three-person venture involving Seki, CEO Hokuto Ueda and design lead Johnny Ting. Seki engineers its mechanisms. The team’s debut, Fading Hours, is a mechanical alarm watch conceived as a gentle audible signal for moving into or out of focused work.
As reported by Hodinkee on 23 December 2025, the dial acts as the sounding surface: a vertical hammer strikes it from behind to create the alarm. A single crown button operates the alarm functions. When the alarm is set, a normally hidden pair of alarm hands becomes visible; the bezel is used to adjust the alarm time. The approach is characteristic of Seki’s work so far: the mechanism and display are organized around what the watch is meant to do, rather than added as unrelated complications.

What does the Louis Vuitton Watch Prize finalist status mean?
The official Louis Vuitton Watch Prize finalists listing includes Fading Hours by Quiet Club among the finalists for the 2025–2026 edition and identifies the project as based in Tokyo. This is a second notable recognition for Seki’s work, following his 2020 competition win. It means the watch reached the finalist stage; it does not mean it won the prize.

- CLASSIC WHITE DIAL WITH BLUE HANDS – Clean white dial with striking blue hands and bold Arabic numerals for easy reading at a glance. Vintage-inspired design that draws compliments. A timeless aesthetic that works equally well for business or casual wear. 40mm case size offers substantial wrist presence without being overwhelming
- AUTOMATIC SELF-WINDING MOVEMENT – Powered by wrist motion during wear, no battery needed. Manual winding available as backup for occasional use. For optimal performance, wear regularly or hand-wind 15-20 turns daily. Note: Power reserve may not last overnight without regular wear or winding
- SCRATCH-RESISTANT MINERAL GLASS – Reinforced mineral crystal resists scratches and scuffs from daily wear. Clear exhibition case back lets you view the intricate mechanical movement. Durable construction for reliable everyday use
- COMFORTABLE BROWN PU LEATHER STRAP – Soft, flexible PU leather strap designed for all-day comfort. Adjustable buckle closure fits most wrist sizes. 20mm strap width complements the classic dial design. (Note: For extended durability, avoid prolonged exposure to moisture.)
- VERSATILE & EASY-TO-READ DESIGN – Bold numerals and contrasting blue hands ensure quick time reading in various lighting conditions. 13mm slim profile fits comfortably under shirt cuffs. Ideal for work, weekends, travel, or casual outings. 3ATM splash-resistant for hand-washing and light rain
Together, the two recognitions point to a career with momentum: first, a student project that drew attention for its inventive mechanical displays; now, a collaborative debut built around an unusual functional alarm. The finalist listing supports the significance of Fading Hours, but the long-term case for Seki rests just as much on the coherence of the work as on awards.

Seki has said he wants to make more watches under the Quiet Club name, while a brand under his own name remains a longer-term dream rather than an announced plan. In the 2024 MONOCHROME interview, he said, “For now, when it comes to brands and branding, I want to make more watches under the Quiet Club name.” He added: “For the longer term, there’s of course a dream of creating my very own brand, under my own name.”

His stated preference for craft over scale is another clue to the kind of career he hopes to build. “I would rather stick to lower production numbers and improve my skills that way rather than focus on higher volumes,” he told MONOCHROME. It is a personal goal, not a verified production policy for every future project.
Seki has also described the appeal of watchmaking as a balance between utility and expression: “What I find fascinating is the duality of watches. It has to be a functional tool to be considered a watch, but it can also be an art form.” His spherical moon phase and Quiet Club’s alarm offer two different interpretations of that idea.
Why Seki is one to watch—not a sure thing
The case for Seki as a potential major name is grounded in a promising progression, not a prediction that can yet be treated as fact. His student watch demonstrated original thinking within a movement that was partly based on an established calibre. Fading Hours applies mechanical ingenuity to a defined use, and its finalist status gives the project current external recognition. Those are strong reasons to follow his work.
What remains open is how that early promise develops: what Quiet Club makes next, whether Seki eventually launches a namesake brand, and how audiences respond to the watches over time. For now, the most accurate description is that he is a young independent watchmaker with a distinctive problem-solving approach and an increasingly visible platform.
