Grand Seiko announced the SBGP017 on June 7, 2022, as part of a year-long celebration of the 44GS’s 55th anniversary. The company identifies the original 1967 44GS as the first watch to embody its “Grand Seiko Style,” a design code it describes as nine principles that continue to inform the brand’s designs. The SBGP017 is a Heritage Collection model, not a mechanical watch: it uses the quartz Caliber 9F85. Its anniversary designation refers to the 44GS design, rather than a claim that the SBGP017 itself reproduces every detail of the 1967 watch.
What makes the SBGP017 different from a regular 44GS?
A dial inspired by Shinshu clouds
Grand Seiko says the blue-toned dial texture evokes clouds forming around the mountains of Shinshu, where the company says its quartz watches are made. The brand describes mornings when a “sea of clouds” extends across the lowlands. That is the manufacturer’s stated design inspiration. 44GS design details and finish
The anniversary watch connects to the 44GS through the design language Grand Seiko associates with the 1967 model. The official US Boutique listing also describes Zaratsu polishing on the case. The distinctive blue dial and anniversary markings make this a specific limited edition within that broader design family; the sources do not establish that every 44GS-style model shares the SBGP017’s dial or specifications.
What does the 9F85 movement do?
Caliber 9F85 is a quartz movement with time and date functions. Its time-difference adjustment lets the hour hand move independently without stopping the seconds hand, so changing time zones does not interrupt seconds timekeeping, according to Grand Seiko. The manufacturer also describes three details intended to refine operation and display:
- Backlash auto-adjust mechanism: intended to prevent visible shudder of the seconds hand.
- Fast date change: a date-change mechanism designed for a quick transition.
- Twin-pulse control system: allows the minute and seconds hands to reach the edge of the dial.
Grand Seiko says the movement’s fine finish and tempered blue screws can be viewed through a sapphire case back. The US Boutique specification listing, in turn, identifies a stainless-steel caseback; consult the actual watch or seller’s documentation if the caseback configuration matters to a purchase. How accurate is the SBGP017?
Grand Seiko’s stated accuracy for Caliber 9F85 is +5 to -5 seconds per year at temperatures from 5°C to 35°C. The Japanese release describes this as annual accuracy of ±5 seconds when worn on the wrist within that temperature range. The US Boutique listing gives an approximate three-year battery duration; Seiko Watch Co.’s Japanese release likewise states an approximate three-year battery life. Actual battery life can vary, and neither source presents this figure as a measured result for an individual watch.

How many were made, and what did it cost at launch?
Grand Seiko announced a worldwide limited edition of 2,000 pieces, planned for July 2022 availability through Grand Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers. Is the SBGP017 still available?
The Grand Seiko US Boutique product page currently labels the SBGP017 “No Longer Available.” That status applies to the official US Boutique listing; it does not show whether other retailers have stock or whether individual watches are being offered on the secondary market. The available official information does not establish live inventory elsewhere or a current resale price. If considering a pre-owned example, verify the seller, condition, serial number, authenticity, and included documentation directly.

Is the Grand Seiko SBGP017 worth buying?
It is a strong fit for someone seeking a limited 44GS anniversary design with a distinctive blue dial and the convenience of a high-accuracy quartz movement. The published 40.0 mm diameter, 10.7 mm thickness, and 46.2 mm case length give useful dimensions to compare against a watch that fits comfortably; trying it on is still the best way to assess fit. Its 10-bar water resistance and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance are published specifications, not independent performance test results.
The key trade-off is that the SBGP017’s appeal rests on its particular design, anniversary connection, and 9F85 quartz features rather than mechanical movement. Whether it merits a particular asking price depends on the individual watch and seller: the official sources establish historic market prices, but not present-day resale value or condition-adjusted pricing.
