Short answer: a high-priced G-SHOCK MR-G can combine premium materials, detailed finishing and limited production, but the exact watch and its price matter. Casio’s current MRG-D5000 “Blue Rose Project” is limited to 20 pieces worldwide, yet Casio has not confirmed its final price. It therefore cannot be verified as costing almost as much as a platinum Rolex Daytona.
Which G-SHOCK does the comparison refer to?
The headline does not name a reference, and the available official evidence does not establish a G-SHOCK price that can be directly matched to a platinum Daytona. The closest current example is Casio’s MRG-D5000 “Blue Rose Project,” a sapphire-crystal project in the MR-G collection. Casio says it is planned at 20 pieces worldwide, but its project page states that “Final specifications, price, availability and sales terms remain subject to confirmation.” Casio’s MRG-D5000 project page

That distinction matters: a limited project is not proof of a particular price. Casio’s U.S. page lists a different MR-G, the MRG-G1000B-1A, at $3,000 and marks it sold out. That model shows MR-G can sit in a several-thousand-dollar retail tier, but its price does not establish what the MRG-D5000 will cost. Casio’s MRG-G1000B-1A listing

Materials and finishing vary by reference
Casio positions MR-G as its top G-SHOCK collection, a line dating to 1996 that applies G-SHOCK engineering to premium design and craftsmanship. That explains the collection’s positioning, not a disclosed manufacturing-cost formula or a guarantee of market value. Casio’s MRG-D5000 project page

Materials should be checked against the exact reference. For models in the MRG-B5000 collection, Casio identifies a COBARION cobalt-chrome bezel, a DAT55G alloy band, and a Ti64 titanium case, back cover and buttons. Casio describes COBARION as about four times as hard as pure titanium and DAT55G as about three times as hard. Those claims apply to the MRG-B5000 collection; they should not be attributed to the MRG-D5000 without model-specific confirmation. Casio’s MRG-B5000 materials page
The MRG-D5000 project’s own page identifies sapphire crystal in its bezel. That is a concrete specification for this project, but it does not by itself explain a final price that Casio has not yet confirmed. Casio’s MRG-D5000 project page

Limited production affects access, not proven value
Casio plans 20 MRG-D5000 pieces worldwide. A separate announcement says the MRG-B2100HR-1A is limited to 800 pieces worldwide, with a planned November 13, 2026 release. These are different watches and different production runs; neither number establishes a resale premium or makes the models equivalent in price to a Daytona. How does it compare with a platinum Rolex Daytona?
Rolex’s official catalogue includes a 40 mm platinum Cosmograph Daytona, a distinct chronograph product. Its specifications and the MRG-D5000’s materials describe different watches with different purposes; neither material prestige nor limited production alone says which is the better purchase. A valid price comparison requires the exact G-SHOCK reference and Daytona reference, country, currency, date, tax treatment, and whether the figure is authorized-retailer pricing or a secondary-market asking price. Rolex’s localized live listing may show prices by market, while Casio’s MRG-D5000 page leaves its price unconfirmed. Without a dated, geographically specific price for both watches, “almost as much” remains unverified.
What to check before treating the price as comparable
- Reference: Confirm the model number. Do not transfer the MRG-G1000B-1A’s listed price to the MRG-D5000.
- Price basis: Match country, currency, tax treatment and date, and distinguish authorized retail from resale asking prices.
- Specifications: Compare model-specific materials and functions, not collection-wide assumptions.
- Availability: Separate a planned limited run from a confirmed release, current stock or actual sale price.
- Purpose: Consider whether the purchase is for a rugged functional watch or a scarce luxury collectible; the sources do not establish comparative investment returns, service costs or resale performance.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Official Casio material supports the MR-G collection’s premium positioning, the MRG-D5000 project’s planned 20-piece run and sapphire bezel crystal, and a separate $3,000 U.S. listing for the sold-out MRG-G1000B-1A. It does not provide a confirmed MRG-D5000 price, a cost breakdown, or evidence that its price is objectively justified. Rolex documentation confirms a 40 mm platinum Daytona, but a meaningful price comparison still requires matched market and date information.
