If what you love about the Speedmaster Moonwatch is its historically styled presentation, the Hesalite version is the one to consider. It is not a requirement for every fan: OMEGA sells the current Moonwatch Professional in both Hesalite and sapphire. The Hesalite steel-bracelet model is reference 310.30.42.50.01.001.

Which current Speedmaster has Hesalite?

OMEGA’s current collection is called the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional. Its black-dial, stainless-steel Hesalite model with a steel bracelet is reference 310.30.42.50.01.001. It has a 42 mm case and a manual-winding calibre 3861. OMEGA also lists a Hesalite version on a nylon strap, reference 310.32.42.50.01.001.

For the steel-bracelet model, OMEGA’s product sheet specifies a 20 mm lug width, 47.50 mm lug-to-lug measurement, 13.54 mm thickness and approximate weight of 134 g. It lists 50 m water resistance, a 50-hour power reserve, METAS Master Chronometer approval and resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. These specifications are for reference 310.30.42.50.01.001; check the specification sheet for another reference before assuming every detail is identical. OMEGA’s product sheet

What Hesalite adds to the Moonwatch’s appeal

The case for Hesalite is chiefly about design and historical presentation. OMEGA describes the Moonwatch’s spaceflight heritage and says the collection received NASA flight qualification in 1965. That history helps explain why a fan might prefer the Hesalite configuration, but it does not show that the crystal on today’s watch is necessary for spaceflight, or that it caused the original qualification. In its 2021 Moonwatch guide, Hodinkee describes the Hesalite model as having a painted dial logo and a solid caseback. Those details distinguish its presentation from the sapphire configuration and may matter to someone choosing between the two. They are design differences, not proof that one version is objectively better. Hodinkee’s model guide
