Those activities can strengthen the audience, skills and connections the sector relies on. They make the FHH an important contributor—not a proven, uniquely indispensable cause of industry growth: its published sources do not quantify an independent effect on sales, jobs or production.
What the FHH is—and what “crucial” means here
Founded in 2005 by Audemars Piguet, Girard-Perregaux and the Richemont Group, the FHH describes itself as a neutral point of reference for watchmaking subjects. Its stated mission is to spread watchmaking culture internationally and present the watch as an object of art and culture. The foundation’s account of its 20th anniversary credits industry figure Franco Cologni with the original vision of conserving and transmitting that culture. FHH’s official website outlines its mission and activities.
In this context, “growth” is best understood as the conditions that help an industry endure and develop: public interest, informed professionals and opportunities for sector-wide discussion. The FHH’s stated work addresses those conditions. Its sources do not demonstrate that the foundation alone is necessary, or measure how much its work changes the industry’s economic performance.
How the FHH supports the sector
It brings watchmaking culture to wider audiences
Watches and Culture by FHH, created in 2021, uses content, events, exhibitions and international meetings to engage both the public and professionals. Making the craft, history and industry easier to understand can help people recognize what distinguishes a watch beyond its function. That is a plausible way to cultivate interest, but FHH does not report how much this programming affects consumer demand.

It teaches watchmaking knowledge
The FHH Academy trains and certifies watchmaking knowledge for professionals and enthusiasts. In an article published during its 2025 anniversary year, the foundation reported that the Academy had trained more than 40,000 people and issued more than 15,000 certificates since it began in 2014. These are cumulative figures reported by FHH; they indicate educational reach, not independently measured job creation, productivity or industry-wide skills outcomes. FHH’s site provides information about its Academy and programs.
A more recent example is an academic collaboration announced by FHH and the Gemological Institute of America on September 17, 2026. The organizations said they intend to combine their expertise and networks to create learning opportunities and broaden access to horological knowledge worldwide. This is an announced collaboration and stated aim; the announcement does not establish completed results.

It creates a forum for industry dialogue
The FHH Forum is described as a platform for discussion, information and debate. Convening people across the sector can help circulate ideas and surface shared concerns. The FHH presents this as a way to contribute to shaping the industry’s future, but its published account does not specify or measure downstream policy, commercial or production effects.
How the FHH differs from the Swiss watch industry federation
The FHH and the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) have different mandates. The FHH focuses on culture, education and convening. The FH describes itself as an association that represents member firms, protects and develops the Swiss watch industry, coordinates members’ interests and provides legal, economic and commercial services.

The FH says it represents around 500 members, or more than 90% of Swiss firms active in the production and sale of watches, clocks and components. That figure describes the FH’s stated membership and scope; it is not a measure of FHH participation or impact. See the FH’s “Who are we?” page for its description of the federation.

The FHH’s contribution is clearest as a set of mechanisms: it promotes understanding of watchmaking, offers structured education and creates space for industry exchange. Its reported Academy totals show substantial cumulative reach, while the cultural and Forum pillars describe additional ways it seeks to serve the sector.

Those activities support the argument that the FHH can help create favorable conditions for the watch industry’s development. They do not establish a quantified causal link to industry growth, nor show that no other organization could perform similar work. The most accurate description is that the FHH is an important cultural and educational contributor to the ecosystem, rather than the sole engine of its economic success.
