The modern 116400GV is the clearest version to assess: it pairs a green sapphire crystal with a 40 mm Oystersteel case, and Rolex says the Milgauss was designed to resist magnetic interference up to 1,000 gauss. Rolex discontinued the model in 2023, so buying one now means evaluating a specific pre-owned watch or any remaining dealer inventory, not choosing from the active catalog.
Why the Milgauss is on my shortlist
The appeal is unusually focused: the Milgauss connects a recognizable design to a practical engineering story. Rolex says it was created in 1956 for engineers and technicians whose work exposed them to magnetic fields that could disrupt mechanical watches. The name and specification give the watch a clear tool-watch identity, while the green crystal makes the modern GV versions visually distinctive.
That combination is a reason to consider the watch, not proof that it will outperform another watch in every magnetic environment. Rolex describes the Milgauss as designed to resist interference up to 1,000 gauss while maintaining chronometric performance; that is Rolex’s product claim and intended use. Rolex’s Milgauss user guide sets out the history and resistance claim.

Is the Rolex Milgauss still in production?
No longer in the active lineup as reported on March 27, 2023. Hodinkee reported that Rolex discontinued the Milgauss, including the green-crystal black-dial and Z-Blue 116400GV versions. That is a dated report, not a guarantee about later announcements or individual dealer stock. Availability is listing-specific; no live inventory is established here. See Hodinkee’s March 27, 2023 discontinuation report.
For a buyer, discontinued status changes the shopping task: identify the exact reference and configuration, then judge the individual watch and transaction rather than assuming any listing is equivalent.

How I would assess a pre-owned example
Confirm the reference and configuration
Start by verifying whether the watch is a 116400GV Z-Blue, a black-dial GV, a non-GV 116400, or a vintage reference. Do not use the modern 116400GV specifications as a proxy for vintage models. Have a qualified specialist check the actual watch and its components; the reference number or photographs alone do not establish authenticity.

Inspect condition and originality
Assess the case shape and wear, bracelet condition and stretch, crystal, dial, hands and any service parts. Ask what has been replaced or refinished and whether the seller can support those claims. A specialist’s inspection of the specific watch is more useful than a general statement that a model is desirable.
Review documentation and service history
Ask what documentation accompanies the watch and request available service records. Check the seller’s account independently. Papers and records can help establish provenance and service context, but their presence alone does not guarantee authenticity or condition.

- Automatic Watch movement: NH35A movement imported from Japan is of excellent quality, A good movement determines the value of a watch. When we wear a watch, the swing of our arms will drive the pendulum to rotate, and the winding in the watch will drive the chain of the watch, Push the time operation, and wear the rotating handle head for 20-30 turns for the first time
- Pagani Design 1733 Size:Watch thickness: 14 mm/0.55 inch. strap width: 20 mm/0.79 inch. The circumference of the watch is 240 mm/ 9.45 inch and the diameter is 10 mm/1.57 inch. The watch is designed for adult men. If your wrist is relatively small, we have distributed gadgets to adjust the strap
- Green Sapphire Crystal is a unique watch crystal that is scratch and fade resistant and is only used on this watch. Its light green hue runs throughout the crystal, turning almost luminous at the beveled edges. It is the result of a secret process that takes years of development to master and takes weeks to produce
- Z-Blue dial Green sapphire crystal was introduced on the PD1733, setting a precedent in watchmaking. This crystal is now combined with an electric blue dial that hints at the iconic lightning-shaped seconds hand.
- Excellent Customer Service: If you encounter any product quality or function problems after receiving the watch, please contact us in time to solve the problem for you. Generally, you will receive a response within 12 to 48 hours after sending the message.
Check the transaction protections
Before paying, confirm who performs authentication, whether there is a return window, what warranty applies, which payment protections are available, and what terms govern the transaction in your jurisdiction. Read the actual seller or marketplace terms rather than assuming protections are universal.

WatchCharts reports a last authorized-dealer retail price of $9,300 for the 116400GV in February 2023. That is historical retail context only: it is not a current asking price, a completed-sale result, an appraisal or a fair-value estimate. WatchCharts’ 116400GV model page gives that dated figure.
To judge a current asking price, compare listings and completed sales for the same reference, condition, completeness and geography. Without condition-matched current evidence, there is no sound basis here to call the Milgauss appreciating, rare at a particular level, or a guaranteed store of value.
When it could be the right purchase
The Milgauss makes the strongest case if its scientific history and particular design are what you want to live with, and you are comfortable buying through the pre-owned market or finding remaining inventory. It is a weaker fit if the decision depends on a promised return, a universal current price, or an assumption that discontinued automatically means scarce or valuable. The deciding question is whether a verified example in suitable condition is worth its specific asking price to you.
