It is a distinctive vintage take on the Day-Date—not merely a two-tone model—and documented examples show meaningful variation in movements, dials, bezels, gemstones, and condition. The design is the appeal; auction records alone do not establish what a particular watch is worth today.
What makes a Day-Date a Tridor?
Rolex introduced the Day-Date in 1956. It was the first calendar wristwatch to display the weekday spelled out in full as well as the date: the weekday window sits at 12 o’clock and the date at 3. Rolex describes that launch on its Day-Date model page.
“Tridor” refers to the three colours of gold in the bracelet: yellow, white, and pink (often described as red) gold fused into its center links. Phillips’s catalogue describes the design as a three-gold version of the Day-Date. Its essay places the introduction in the mid-1980s, while Dorotheum’s specialist catalogue says the first Day-Date with a yellow, red, and white-gold bracelet appeared in 1988. The safest historical description is therefore mid-to-late 1980s; Rolex’s reviewed official material does not establish a precise start date. Dorotheum says production ended in the early 2000s, but that endpoint is likewise an auction-catalogue account, not an official Rolex production record.
The bracelet is the defining visual feature, but “Tridor” does not mean every example is otherwise identical. Catalogued watches vary in reference, dial, bezel, gemstone setting, and case material. No production-volume figure is established in the cited sources, so rarity should not be expressed as a percentage or production count.

- Pagani Design 1662 Men's Watch: Pagani Design GMT features a black dial, two-tone ceramic bezel, independent 24-hour hand and 24-hour scale bidirectional rotating outer ring, which can display the time in two time zones at the same time: the date display on the simple design dial creates a simple, high-quality appearance. (Note that the bezel of the red series is not made of ceramic)
- Automatic watch: Equipped with an automatic movement, it mainly transmits kinetic energy through the natural movement of the wearer's wrist. It is self-winding, durable, and has a long kinetic energy reserve without the need for batteries.
- Clear reading: Like all professional watches, the GMT watch is equipped with a self-luminous display to ensure excellent readability anywhere, even in the dark. The large hands and simple hour markers - triangle, circle, rectangle - are filled with luminous material, emitting a long-lasting glow.
- 100 meters waterproof: The watch is waterproof to a depth of 100 meters. Do not put the watch in a hot bath. Waterproof for daily use, cold shower, hand washing, rain, splashing water, cold shower are no problem. It is not recommended to wear the watch in a hot bath. Water vapor will corrode the waterproof rubber ring, and most watches do not have water vapor protection.

What documented Tridor examples tell us
Auction catalogues provide useful examples of configurations, not a complete specification for every Tridor. The following records show both recurring features and variation:
| Record | Documented details | Price information |
|---|---|---|
| Phillips, Geneva Watch Auction XIX, lot 141 (2024) | Reference 18239B; dated to 1990; 36 mm; white-gold case; automatic calibre 3155; yellow-, white-, and pink-gold President bracelet. | CHF 33,020 realized result for this single lot. |
| Phillips, Geneva Watch Auction: SEVEN, lot 115 (2018) | Group of three Tridor watches from 1986 and 1990, with calibre 3055 or 3155 and differing gemstone configurations. | CHF 58,750 realized result for the group of three; it is not a per-watch price. |
| Sotheby’s, Important Watches 2025, lot 2108 | Circa-1994 reference 18239; 36 mm; calibre 3155; three-colour President bracelet. | No price figure cited here. Sotheby’s warned that accuracy had not been tested and that it could not guarantee the authenticity of individual components after repair or restoration. |
| Dorotheum, 2023 listing | Circa-1990 reference 18239B; approximately 36 mm; calibre 3155. | Estimate of EUR 19,000–28,000, not a realized sale price. |
These records support 36 mm as a documented size for the cited examples, not as a claim that every Tridor has the same dimensions. They also show why reference and movement should be checked on the individual watch rather than inferred from the name.

Why both calibre 3055 and 3155 appear
Rolex’s official history says calibre 3155 replaced calibre 3055 in 1988 and brought double quickset, allowing both the day and date to be set quickly. Phillips’s group of Tridors includes watches with either movement, consistent with examples spanning the transition. That history does not authenticate a specific watch: its movement and records still need to be examined.
Rolex gives this context in “Day-Date — The Choice of Presidents”. Phillips documents the group configuration in its Geneva Watch Auction: SEVEN lot 115 catalogue.

How to assess a vintage Tridor
Start with the whole watch, not just the three-colour bracelet. The Tridor treatment is visually specific, and a catalogue description or attractive photograph cannot resolve originality, condition, or current performance. Sotheby’s explicitly cautions that its movement was not tested for accuracy and that the authenticity of individual components after repair or restoration could not be guaranteed.
- Reference and case: Compare the reference and caseback markings with the seller’s description and the watch’s documentation.
- Bracelet: Check that the bracelet has the yellow-, white-, and pink-gold center-link configuration. Examine end-link and clasp stamps, condition, and stretch; look for signs of polishing that may soften edges or alter surfaces.
- Dial, bezel, and stones: Confirm that the dial, bezel, and gemstone configuration match the specific example being represented. Catalogued Tridors are not uniform in these details.
- Originality and service: Ask which parts are original, what repairs or restoration have been performed, and whether there is a movement service history. A stated calibre or auction description is not a substitute for inspection.
- Provenance and purchase terms: Review available provenance, box and papers, seller disclosures, and whether an independent inspection is possible before purchase.
If a seller cannot document or permit checks on the features that matter, treat the uncertainty as part of the buying decision rather than assuming that the Tridor name settles it.

What auction numbers can—and cannot—say
The cited records establish that Tridors have appeared at auction, but they do not establish a current market-wide value. CHF 33,020 was Phillips’s realized result for one 1990 reference 18239B lot in its 2024 Geneva Watch Auction XIX. CHF 58,750 was the 2018 Phillips result for a group of three watches, not an individual-watch valuation. Dorotheum’s EUR 19,000–28,000 figure was an estimate in its 2023 listing, not a sale result.
When comparing prices, keep the auction house, lot, currency, date, and result type attached to each figure. A group sale, an estimate, and a single-watch realized result are not interchangeable, and none alone establishes what a different watch should cost.
Wrist Game or Crying Shame?
Wrist Game. The Tridor makes the Day-Date’s precious-metal character unusually legible: its bracelet brings three gold colours together in a design that is more distinctive than a conventional single-colour President bracelet. The case, dial, bezel, and gemstone variations give individual examples their own character, while the Day-Date’s full weekday display remains the recognizable foundation.
The verdict depends on buying the actual watch, not the romance of its name. A convincing example needs coherent documentation, carefully assessed condition, and clear disclosure of movement and component history. Without those checks, the unusual bracelet is not enough to turn uncertainty into a good purchase.
