The serpent is important to Bulgari because it became the defining form of Serpenti: a watch and jewelry design that joins a coiling, flexible shape to skilled goldsmithing. Since Bulgari says the first Serpenti bracelet-watches appeared in 1948, the motif has changed repeatedly while remaining recognizable. The house associates it with transformation and ancestral energy; its significance also draws on the serpent’s broader history in art and mythology.
How Serpenti began
Bulgari’s account places Serpenti’s beginnings in the 1940s. The Second World War constrained production and access to materials, the company says, prompting a turn toward warm yellow gold rather than diamond-encrusted platinum. Bulgari also describes the period as one of softer, sinuous forms inspired by nature. This is the house’s retrospective account of the design context, not independent archival confirmation.
Bulgari dates its first Serpenti bracelet-watches to 1948. Their distinctive combination was a spiral Tubogas bracelet and a geometric watch dial. The result made the serpent more than an image applied to a watch: the bracelet itself coiled around the wrist, translating the animal’s form into wearable construction.
Bulgari’s history of the 1940s describes the introduction and its period context.

Why the construction matters
The design’s impact depends on how the band was made. Bulgari describes Tubogas as gold strips wrapped around a core to create flexible, rounded bands without soldering. Producing even tension required highly practiced artisans. That technique let the bracelet bend and coil while retaining a continuous, sculptural appearance—qualities that made it especially suited to a serpent-shaped watch.
In Serpenti, therefore, form and craft reinforce each other: the coiling body is both the visual idea and the practical structure. Bulgari’s account explains the technique and its connection to the watch’s flexible band in its 1940s history.

What the serpent symbolizes
Bulgari describes Serpenti as imbued with “perpetual transformation and ancestral energy.” That is the house’s interpretation of its own icon, not a universal definition of serpent symbolism. The language suits a design that sheds any single fixed appearance while keeping its characteristic coil: transformation is expressed through both the motif and its history of reinterpretation.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum offers a wider cultural lens, connecting serpent imagery with mythology and themes including femininity. Its exhibition also presents Bulgari’s Serpenti as a sequence of interpretations across decades, from historical jewelry to newer designs. These contexts enrich the motif but do not reduce every serpent image—or every Serpenti design—to one meaning. See the museum’s Bulgari–Serpenti exhibition and Bulgari’s Serpenti heritage page.

Why it remains a Bulgari signature
Serpenti’s importance rests on continuity through change, rather than on one design frozen in time. Bulgari says the icon evolved substantially through its iterations while retaining its original essence. Across those changes, the coiling serpent remains legible, while the treatment can shift between more abstract or more figurative forms and different expressions of jewelry-watch craftsmanship.
That balance gives the house a lasting signature: a recognizable motif with room for reinvention, grounded in a construction technique that makes the serpent’s flexible body part of the object itself. The available historical account establishes the 1948 origin and Tubogas connection, but it does not provide a complete decade-by-decade chronology or identify a specific designer as the originator.
