Why the TAG Heuer Monaco Watch and Monaco Grand Prix Shared Anniversaries in 2019

In 2019, Heuer’s Monaco watch marked 50 years and the Monaco Grand Prix marked 90 years since its first race. The milestones share a motorsport setting but commemorate separate histories.

2019 marked two separate milestones: 50 years since Heuer launched the Monaco watch in 1969, and 90 years since the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929. The anniversaries converged around a shared motorsport setting, but they measure different histories: one is a watch’s launch anniversary; the other is elapsed time since the inaugural race, not the 90th annual edition.

Why did both anniversaries fall in 2019?

Heuer introduced the Monaco in 1969, and the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) dates the first Monaco Grand Prix to 1929. Counting elapsed years brings both milestones to 2019: 50 years for the watch and 90 for the race. The race figure does not mean that 90 editions had been held.

The ACM says the club was founded in 1890. Its General Commissioner, Antony Noghès, proposed a race on Monaco’s streets after the club faced difficulty gaining recognition while its competitions took place outside the principality. Prince Pierre inaugurated the circuit on April 14, 1929, ahead of the first Grand Prix. The ACM records that he made a ceremonial lap in a Voisin Torpedo driven by Race Director Charles Faroux.

What made the original Heuer Monaco different?

TAG Heuer’s official magazine dates the Monaco’s release in Geneva to March 3, 1969. The brand describes it as the first water-resistant, square-faced automatic chronograph; that “first” claim is the company’s characterization. At a time when round cases and light-colored dials were familiar choices, the Monaco stood out with a square steel case, metallic blue dial, red seconds hand, domed glass and crown on the left side.

Its movement was part of that identity. The original Monaco used the Calibre 11 automatic chronograph, with the left-positioned crown reflecting the movement’s layout. The combination made the watch visually distinctive as well as technically notable.

How did the watch connect to Monaco motorsport?

The name was part of Heuer’s broader interest in motor racing. The ACM says Jack Heuer’s interest in racing instruments in the late 1950s inspired him to name watches after circuits and races, including Monza, Silverstone, Montreal and Monaco. The shared name links the watch to the principality’s racing identity, but the watch and the Grand Prix remain distinct subjects with different anniversary dates.

  • The watch is powered by the motion of the wearer's wrist. If the watch is not worn for 8 or more active hours per day, it will run slower than usual or even stop briefly.

A separate moment in the Monaco’s popular history came in the 1971 film Le Mans. TAG Heuer’s magazine recounts that Steve McQueen chose a Heuer Monaco for his character. The film centers on the 24 Hours of Le Mans, not the Monaco Grand Prix.

How did TAG Heuer mark the watch’s 50th anniversary?

TAG Heuer celebrated the 2019 milestone with five limited editions, each drawing on a decade in the Monaco’s history. The brand’s vintage collection page describes their decade-linked color themes:

2009–2019 Charcoal dial with black-gold accents

These were anniversary interpretations of successive periods, not a single unchanged design reproduced five times. For example, the 50th Anniversary Automatic reference CAW211X.FC6468 is listed by TAG Heuer as discontinued. Its specifications apply to that reference alone: a 39 mm steel case, Calibre 11 automatic movement, 40-hour power reserve, 100 m water resistance and 22 mm lug distance. The brand’s discontinued listing means readers should not assume this particular edition remains available new from TAG Heuer.

What happened at the first Monaco Grand Prix?

The ACM’s history says 16 cars started the inaugural race. It reports that “Williams” won in a green Bugatti 35B after 100 laps, in 3 hours, 56 minutes and 11 seconds, at an average speed of 80.194 kph. These are figures from the club’s account of the 1929 race; the online page does not state its publication date.

Did the partnership continue after the 2019 anniversaries?

Yes, in a later and specific form. In May 2020, the ACM announced TAG Heuer as official sponsor and timekeeper of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, alongside a special Monaco watch for that event. That partnership followed the 2019 anniversaries; it should not be treated as a 2019 announcement or as sponsorship of the original Grand Prix.
