Why did Cartier discontinue the Roadster?
The reason is not established. The sources reviewed do not include a Cartier or Richemont statement explaining the commercial or strategic decision, so weak sales, changing fashion, collection rationalization, or a shift toward another model would be speculation.

Cartier’s 2004 Richemont annual report described Roadster as “firmly positioned as a Cartier leading light” and noted that year’s Roadster Chrono launch and a smaller ladies’ model. The Roadster launched in 2002. WatchTime reports that the original line was discontinued in 2012 and that the collection returned in 2026. Cartier’s current Canadian collection page also describes the Roadster as making a comeback after its 2002 debut. The Roadster is therefore not still discontinued, although a pre-owned watch from the earlier generation is distinct from the current collection.

Cartier’s Canadian page presents seven current models. The relaunch coverage describes seven variants in two sizes: a large case measuring 47 × 38 mm and a medium case measuring 42.5 × 34.9 mm. Hodinkee and WatchTime report changes to proportions, lines, bracelet, and ergonomics while retaining recognizable Roadster styling. WatchTime says more than a hundred specialists were involved in redevelopment; that is the publication’s attributed figure, not an independently audited production statistic. What changed in the 2026 Roadster?
The current large-model product page gives specifications for reference WSRD0014; they should not be assumed to describe every current model or any earlier Roadster. Cartier lists an automatic 1847 MC movement, a steel case measuring 47.2 × 38.7 mm, 10-bar water resistance, a bracelet, and an additional navy rubber strap with an interchangeable system. For the relaunch, Hodinkee reports an 1847 MC movement in the large model and a 1899 MC in the medium model. Cartier’s description of the design highlights its speedometer-inspired dial, conical crown, headlight-shaped date magnifier, rivets, and screws. Confirm the specifications of the exact reference you are considering rather than generalizing from a size or collection name.

There is no universal yes or no. A legacy Roadster may suit someone who prefers its particular design or wants a specific earlier reference. Whether an individual watch is worth its asking price depends on its exact reference, size, material, condition, service history, completeness, seller protections, and fit. The sources do not establish that Roadsters generally appreciate or that discontinuation makes them rare or a guaranteed investment.

Use this checklist before buying an older Roadster
- Identify the reference and size. Check the reference on the watch and its documentation, then compare the dimensions with how it sits on your wrist. Designs and specifications vary across generations and references.
- Inspect condition and originality. Review the case, crystal, dial, hands, crown, bracelet, clasp, and any replacement parts. Request clear photographs and consider an independent inspection for a consequential purchase.
- Ask for service records. Request dated documentation and details of work performed. If the history or condition is uncertain, account for possible servicing; no fixed service cost is established here.
- Check authenticity, provenance, and protections. Review consistency between the serial and reference, the seller’s authentication process, return terms, and any included papers or box. A listing alone does not establish that a particular watch is suitable.
- Compare like with like. Use the same reference, material, condition, completeness, and service status when comparing pre-owned asking prices. Steel, gold, quartz, and automatic examples are not interchangeable price comparisons.
- Compare it with the current range. Consider the 2026 watch’s official specifications and Cartier’s current service and warranty information alongside the older watch. Price, dimensions, movement, and design details may differ; try both if possible.
