A GMT watch can appear to show the wrong time even when it is working as designed: its regular hour and minute hands may show local time while a separate 24-hour hand shows a reference time. A moved bezel, incorrect time-zone or daylight-saving setting, or misaligned hands can also cause a mismatch. Identify the watch and movement first, then use the instructions for that exact model—GMT setting sequences are not universal.
First, identify which time each display shows
Look at the dial and your watch’s manual to identify the regular hour and minute hands, the 24-hour hand, and any rotating bezel. On many GMT watches, the regular hands show local time and the 24-hour hand shows a chosen reference time. Because that hand completes one rotation in 24 hours, read it against a 24-hour scale; a 12-hour dial alone may make morning and evening seem interchangeable.

Functions vary by movement. TUDOR’s tutorial explains its arrangement this way: “THE REFERENCE TIME IS INDICATED BY THE RED 24-HOUR HAND COUPLED WITH THE REGULAR MINUTE HAND.” That is a description of the models and method in its GMT tutorial, not a rule for every GMT watch.

Check the bezel
If your watch has a rotating bezel, check whether it has moved from the position used to read the intended time zone. On some watches, shifting the bezel changes the zone indicated by the 24-hour hand without changing the watch’s underlying time setting.

Confirm what the 24-hour hand represents
Work out which zone the 24-hour hand was set to track, then compare its reading with that zone’s current time. Some designs let you change local time independently of reference time; others use different setting steps. TUDOR’s tutorial describes setting reference time with the 24-hour and minute hands, adjusting local time separately, and using the bezel to read a third zone. Citizen’s caliber 9054 manual provides a different, movement-specific procedure. Follow the instructions for your own watch rather than transferring steps between models.
If the discrepancy is one hour or 30 minutes
On a watch with electronic city, time-zone, or daylight-saving controls, check that the selected home city or time-zone and DST setting match your location and the date. Casio says an incorrect time-zone setting can produce a one-hour or 30-minute offset on the module covered by its guidance. Its time-adjustment support explains the relevant checks. A mechanical GMT watch may not have electronic city or DST settings, so do not look for controls it does not offer.

If a hand points to the wrong position
When the selected time is correct but a hand does not point where it should, the problem may be hand alignment rather than the time-zone setting. Consult the exact model’s manual for its reference-position or hand-position correction procedure; the names and steps depend on the watch. Casio’s module 5672 troubleshooting guidance covers time-zone offsets and hand alignment for that module. Do not use its procedure on an unrelated watch.

A safe troubleshooting order
- Identify the make, model, and movement. Find the model or caliber information on the case, paperwork, or manufacturer’s support site.
- Read the display correctly. Use the manual to determine which hands show local and reference time, and whether the 24-hour hand is read against a bezel or another scale.
- Check the bezel and intended reference zone. If local time is correct but the second-zone reading is not, verify the bezel position and the zone the GMT hand is meant to show.
- Check electronic settings if your model has them. Confirm the home city or time-zone and daylight-saving setting for the location and date.
- Use the model’s hand-correction procedure if alignment is the issue. Follow the precise manual for the watch’s reference-position adjustment.
- Contact the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker if it remains wrong. Do not force the crown or guess at a reset or repair sequence.
Manufacturer instructions support model-specific setting and alignment checks; they do not establish one universal reset or repair procedure for an unidentified GMT watch.
