The official listings checked on October 7, 2026 showed USD 765 before US sales tax for the blue, date-equipped WLCA003ND and €740.83 before tax for the no-date panda WLCA005. Those are different regional listings and configurations—not one worldwide price. Whether it is a “budget” chronograph depends on your alternatives, local costs, service options, and whether you want an automatic watch rather than quartz.
What you get for the price
The attraction is a mechanical chronograph package with specifications often sought by watch buyers: a 41 mm stainless steel case, sapphire crystal and display caseback, a Seiko NE88A automatic movement, and 10 ATM (100 m) stated water resistance. The two official listings reviewed have a 20 mm strap and a 45-hour power reserve. Their prices are regional page prices checked on October 7, 2026, before tax; confirm the current price and terms for the exact reference you are considering.

Which version and dial layout should you choose?
Blue, date-equipped WLCA003ND
The US-listed version has a blue sunray dial and date. Its chronograph layout includes central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute counter, and a 12-hour counter; the listing also specifies small seconds, stop seconds, and tachymeter and telemeter scales. If you want the date, check that the exact reference offered to you is WLCA003ND rather than assuming all watches in the collection share its layout.

No-date panda WLCA005
The European-listed panda version omits the date and is shown with a brown strap and deployment buckle. The page’s title specifies ostrich leather, while its URL and some merchandising labels use “croco.” Because the material description is inconsistent, verify the chosen SKU’s current product details before buying rather than generalizing the strap material across variants.
Fratello’s 2018 launch-era review described six dial variations and date and no-date options at that time. That is a historical account of the collection, not confirmation that all those variants remain available. See the Fratello review.

What the NE88A movement adds
The NE88A is an automatic chronograph movement. William L. 1985’s manual lists a 45-hour power reserve, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and 34 jewels. It also says the watch can be wound by hand and recommends at least 55 clockwise turns at the normal crown position when the watch is fully stopped. The manual’s wording is direct: “This watch is an automatic watch equipped with a manual winding mechanism.” See the manufacturer’s instruction manual.
Fratello’s prototype-era review identifies the movement’s column wheel and vertical clutch. In general, a column wheel controls the chronograph’s start, stop, and reset functions; a vertical clutch is intended to reduce hand jump or shudder when the chronograph starts. Seiko explains these mechanisms for its 8R family, but that page concerns caliber 8R46, not the NE88A in this watch. Fit and ownership considerations
Check the 41 mm case on your wrist
The listed case diameter is 41 mm and the strap width is 20 mm. Diameter alone does not establish how a watch will wear; wrist shape, lug-to-lug length, thickness, and personal preference matter too. Those fit dimensions are not established by the listings summarized here, and no wrist-fit assessment is available. If fit is a concern, try the watch on or confirm the complete case measurements with the seller.
Understand the water-resistance qualification
The product pages state 10 ATM (100 m), but the manual warns against operating the crown or pushers underwater. It also notes that aging gaskets or a shock to the crown can affect water resistance. Treat the rating as a specification, not a reason to actuate the controls underwater, and follow the manufacturer’s current care guidance.

Know the warranty and strap setup
The US listing states a one-year warranty from original purchase; the manual describes a twelve-month warranty subject to its terms. Read the current regional warranty terms before purchase. The manual also explains how to use the easy-bar levers to remove and reattach straps. A 20 mm replacement strap is a possible option, but confirm its width and attachment compatibility.

The most useful independent coverage cited here is Fratello’s 2018 review, which the writer says was based on a prototype supplied by the brand. It comments positively on the case finishing and describes the movement’s industrial appearance, but it is not a recent long-term ownership report. The reviewer wrote, “Time will tell how well this movement performs over the years.” That prototype-era review does not establish long-term reliability or today’s service experience.

Fratello also recounts a €500 preorder price for the Kickstarter-era campaign and says the brand’s first 2016 campaign had a €36,000 goal and raised €191,000. Those are historical campaign figures, not current retail prices or results for the automatic chronograph’s campaign.
How to decide if it is right for you
Compare it with other automatic chronographs on the details that affect both use and ownership, not price alone:
- Movement and service: Decide whether you value an automatic chronograph and whether suitable service is accessible where you live.
- Fit and configuration: Check case dimensions, date or no-date layout, dial, strap material, and buckle for the exact reference.
- Practical specifications: Compare crystal, stated water resistance, chronograph counters, and warranty terms.
- Total purchase cost: Confirm local taxes, shipping, current stock, and the seller’s return and warranty terms.
A quartz chronograph can serve the same timing purpose but represents a different ownership proposition. Movement type is a preference and trade-off, not a simple quality ranking. The William L. 1985 makes most sense when its mechanical movement and styling are the point; if you mainly need an uncomplicated timing tool, compare quartz options on their own merits.
