The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional and Rolex Cosmograph Daytona are both mechanical chronographs, but the choice comes down to how you want to interact with the watch and which design story appeals to you. The specific Moonwatch reference compared here is manually wound, measures 42 mm and has a 50-hour power reserve; the Oystersteel Daytona is self-winding, measures 40 mm and has an approximately 72-hour reserve. Those figures apply to the references below—not every watch in either collection.

Which exact watches are being compared?

“Moonwatch” and “Daytona” each cover multiple models and configurations. To avoid treating either collection as one fixed specification, this comparison uses the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional reference 310.32.42.50.04.001 and the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Oystersteel reference 126500LN.

Specification Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional
310.32.42.50.04.001
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Oystersteel
126500LN
Winding and movement Manual winding; Calibre 3861 Self-winding; Calibre 4131
Power reserve 50 hours Approximately 72 hours
Case diameter 42 mm 40 mm
Water resistance 5 bar / 50 m 100 m
Chronograph presentation Chronograph and tachymeter functions Chronograph with a tachymetric scale

Specifications are those published for the cited references: Omega’s user manual and Rolex’s product information. Case diameter alone cannot predict fit or comfort on an individual wrist.

How do winding and power reserve affect everyday use?

Moonwatch: manual winding

The cited Moonwatch uses Omega Calibre 3861 and must be wound by hand. Its 50-hour power reserve is the manufacturer’s stated figure for this reference. Manual winding means the wearer takes an active role in keeping the movement running.

Daytona: self-winding

The cited Oystersteel Daytona uses Rolex Calibre 4131 and is self-winding. Rolex gives it an approximately 72-hour power reserve. For a wearer who rotates watches, the longer stated reserve may mean more time off the wrist before the movement stops, though actual use depends on the watch and wearing pattern.

Neither winding system is objectively better: choose the routine you prefer. The specifications describe these two references, not every Moonwatch or Daytona.

How do their sizes and water-resistance ratings compare?

The Moonwatch’s stated 42 mm diameter is 2 mm greater than the Daytona’s 40 mm. That is a measurement of case diameter, not a promise that one will feel larger or more comfortable on your wrist; fit also depends on the watch’s overall proportions and your wrist.

Omega specifies 5 bar / 50 m water resistance for the cited Moonwatch, while Rolex specifies 100 m for the cited Daytona. These are manufacturer-published ratings, not activity recommendations. Consult the relevant manufacturer’s instructions for use and care rather than inferring a suitable activity from the number alone.

What distinguishes their chronograph designs and histories?

Both watches offer a chronograph and a tachymeter-related function or scale, but they express that purpose through different brand identities. Omega connects the Speedmaster Moonwatch line with spaceflight. In its 13 January 2026 announcement of new Moonwatch models, Omega described Calibre 3861 as “the most advanced evolution of the famous Calibre 321 that NASA astronauts trusted on the Moon.” That is Omega’s characterization of its movement lineage, not an independent ranking.

Rolex describes the Daytona as designed for professional racing drivers and presents its tachymetric scale as part of that racing identity. These histories and design cues can help distinguish the watches emotionally, but they do not establish that one chronograph is more useful for a particular owner.

Omega also announced two inverted black-and-white dial Moonwatch models in January 2026: one in steel and one in Moonshine Gold. Both are 42 mm and use Calibre 3861. They are additional design variants, not the exact reference used for the specifications above. Details are in Omega’s announcement.

What do they cost, and why is “Daytona price” imprecise?

At the time the Rolex US collection page was accessed in 2026, it showed 47 results and Oystersteel examples listed at $16,900 USD. This is a changeable displayed price for examples on that page—not a guaranteed transaction price, a quote for every 126500LN configuration, or a price for every Daytona. The Rolex US Daytona collection includes a range of models and materials.

The cited official sources do not establish a comparable current US price for the specified Moonwatch. Compare exact references and configurations in your market: material, dial, bracelet or strap, availability and retailer status can all matter. No current secondary-market value, wait time or service-cost comparison is established here.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the Moonwatch if you prefer manual winding, the Moonwatch’s spaceflight identity, or the specific 42 mm reference and its stated specifications.
  • Choose the Daytona if you prefer self-winding, the cited model’s approximately 72-hour reserve, a 40 mm case, or the Daytona’s racing identity.
  • Before deciding, compare the exact watch: reference number, case material, dial, bracelet or strap, warranty, current local price, availability and seller or retailer status.

Rolex states on its product page: “Only official Rolex retailers are allowed to sell and maintain a Rolex watch.” That describes Rolex’s stated retail and service channel; it does not establish the status or reliability of every secondary-market seller.
