Wipe the Slate Clean: How to Factory-Reset Any Smartwatch Safely

A factory reset erases local smartwatch data—but safe transfer also requires syncing, unpairing, removing account locks, handling payment cards and cellular service, and verifying the setup screen.

Resetting a smartwatch is usually easy; transferring it safely takes more than tapping “Reset.” A factory reset removes data stored on the watch and returns it to an initial setup state, but it may not remove an account lock, cancel cellular service, erase an eSIM, or delete health data already stored online.

The safest sequence is: sync, back up, remove cards and cellular service, unpair and remove the watch from its account, reset it, then verify that the setup screen no longer requests the previous owner’s credentials. The exact menus depend on the brand, model, and software version.

Quick checklist

  1. Identify the exact watch model and operating system.
  2. Charge the watch and phone, then perform a final sync.
  3. Confirm that recent workouts, sleep records, health measurements, photos, and settings have uploaded.
  4. Export any data you need to keep independently.
  5. Remove payment cards, passes, accounts, cellular plans, and eSIMs where applicable.
  6. Unpair the watch from the companion app and remove it from the manufacturer’s account.
  7. Perform the model-specific factory reset.
  8. Wait for the initial setup or pairing screen.
  9. If selling or gifting it, confirm that setup does not request your account password.

What a factory reset actually erases

A reset normally erases information stored locally on the watch, including installed apps, app data, settings, preferences, downloaded media, alarms, goals, and notifications. For example, Google says a Wear OS reset removes watch data, apps, app data, settings, and preferences, while Fitbit warns that a reset can delete stored data that has not yet synchronized, along with alarms, goals, and notifications.

It does not necessarily do all of the following:

  • Delete health or fitness history already synchronized to a cloud account.
  • Remove the watch from the companion app or manufacturer account.
  • Disable an anti-theft or ownership lock.
  • Cancel a cellular subscription.
  • Erase an eSIM.
  • Remove payment cards from every related account.

Apple specifically distinguishes between erasing an Apple Watch and unpairing it. Erasing the watch directly restores factory settings but does not remove Activation Lock; unpairing through the iPhone is the preferred transfer method. See Apple’s transfer guidance and its erase and unpairing instructions.

A factory reset is the manufacturer-supported consumer process for removing local data. Do not treat it as a guarantee of forensic-grade deletion or as a way to erase your complete online health-history account.

When should you reset a smartwatch?

For troubleshooting

Use a reset after simpler remedies fail. First restart the watch, charge it adequately, update the phone, companion app, and watch, then try forgetting and reconnecting the Bluetooth device. Google’s Wear OS troubleshooting guidance recommends disconnecting and resetting when ordinary setup troubleshooting has not worked.

When moving to a new phone

Some watches can connect to only one phone at a time, and changing between phone ecosystems may require a reset. Wear OS says a watch connected to another phone may need to be disconnected and reset before it can pair with the new one. Sync first: resetting before the final sync can permanently lose recent activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before selling, gifting, or trading in

This requires more than erasing local data. Remove the account link, disable anti-theft protection, remove payment cards, and cancel or transfer cellular service. A buyer should be able to begin setup without your name, passcode, or account password appearing.

Before returning or recycling

Use the same privacy procedure even when nobody else will use the watch. Google’s return guidance recommends backing up or transferring data, factory-resetting the device, and removing SIM cards before shipping.

Before you reset: the complete preparation checklist

  • Find the model: Reset menus and backup capabilities vary considerably.
  • Know your credentials: Keep the watch passcode and relevant Apple, Google, Samsung, Fitbit, or Garmin account password available.
  • Sync while the watch and phone are nearby: Open the companion app and initiate a final sync. Check recent records rather than assuming the sync completed.
  • Save important data: Export records if the platform offers an export function and you need a separate copy.
  • Remove Wallet items: Delete payment cards, transit cards, passes, and other tokens from the watch.
  • Handle cellular service: Remove the plan during transfer, erase the eSIM if required, and separately contact the carrier to cancel service.
  • Record trade-in details: Photograph the serial number, condition, and included accessories.
  • Keep accessories organized: Include the charger and band only when the recipient or trade-in instructions request them.

Apple’s iPhone unpairing process attempts to create a backup before erasing the watch. Fitbit users should be especially careful: removing a device before it syncs can delete data that has not uploaded.

Apple Watch

Preferred method when the iPhone is available

  1. Keep the Apple Watch and iPhone close together.
  2. Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
  3. Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
  4. Tap the information button beside the watch.
  5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch and confirm.
  6. For a cellular model, choose to remove the cellular plan when selling or giving away the watch.
  7. Enter the Apple Account password to disable Activation Lock.
  8. Wait for unpairing and erasure to finish.

Unpairing through the iPhone both resets the watch and removes Activation Lock, making it the correct method for a transfer.

If the iPhone is unavailable

  1. On the watch, open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Reset.
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  4. Enter the passcode if requested.
  5. Choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
  6. Tap Erase All.

This erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock. The previous owner must remove it from Find My or iCloud before another person can use it.

If the watch has already changed hands

Sign in to the Apple Account at iCloud.com, open Find My iPhone, select All Devices, choose the Apple Watch, select Erase Apple Watch, and then remove the watch from the account after erasure. A buyer should stop setup if the watch requests the former owner’s Apple Account password.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Samsung’s reset path differs between older Galaxy or Gear watches and Galaxy Watches running Wear OS. Follow the instructions for the exact model; do not assume every Galaxy wearable has a physical SIM or memory card.

From Galaxy Wearable

  1. Open Galaxy Wearable on the connected phone.
  2. Tap Watch settings, if shown.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap Reset, then confirm.

For Galaxy Fit devices, Samsung lists Galaxy Wearable > About band > Reset band.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

From the watch

Look under Settings > General for a reset option. The wording and location vary by model and software version.

If you forgot the PIN

Samsung documents a recovery route that uses reboot mode:

  1. Enter reboot mode.
  2. Select Recovery.
  3. Open the recovery menu.
  4. Select Wipe data/factory reset.
  5. Select Factory data reset.
  6. Reboot after the reset completes.

Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 series models may display an additional recovery menu requiring separate wipe and factory-reset selections. See Samsung’s current reset instructions.

Before a trade-in, Samsung requires the device to be factory-reset and free of reactivation, Google Factory Reset Protection, and other anti-theft locks. Sign out of relevant accounts and remove a SIM or memory card only if the particular model supports one. Samsung also warns that swollen or damaged batteries are not eligible for ordinary trade-in shipping.

Wear OS and Pixel Watch

Wear OS is used by several manufacturers, so Google’s generic path is not universal. Galaxy Watch owners should use Samsung’s instructions; other brands may place the same control in their own companion app.

Wear OS 3

  1. Wake the watch and swipe down.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap General, then Reset.
  4. Confirm and enter the PIN.

Older Wear OS versions

  1. Swipe down and tap Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Disconnect and reset.
  4. If that option is absent, choose Unpair with phone.
  5. Confirm with Done.

After a stuck connection, Google recommends forgetting the watch in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and in the Wear OS or manufacturer app, resetting the watch, and pairing again from the beginning. Menu labels vary by manufacturer, device, and software version; see Google’s reset instructions.

Fitbit

Fitbit trackers, smartwatches, and Ace LTE use different procedures. Do not apply one button sequence to every Fitbit product.

  1. Sync the device first.
  2. Use the exact model’s reset instructions.
  3. Confirm the stored data, alarms, goals, and notifications are gone.
  4. Remove the device from the Fitbit or Google Health account afterward.

Do not delete the entire Fitbit or Google account unless that is your intention. Removing a device before it syncs can delete unsynchronized data, while a reset does not necessarily delete health history already stored online. See Google’s guidance on reset behavior and account removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fitbit Ace LTE exception

  1. Keep the Ace LTE on its charger and connected to Wi-Fi for at least one hour.
  2. Open Settings > System > Disconnect & reset.
  3. Enable Erase eSIM.
  4. Confirm with the checkmark.
  5. Cancel Ace Pass separately if it will not be used with another Ace LTE.

Erasing the eSIM and canceling Ace Pass are separate actions. See Google’s Ace LTE instructions.

Garmin

Garmin reset controls are highly model-specific. The safe general process is:

  1. Sync the watch with Garmin Connect.
  2. Remove the device from the Garmin account.
  3. Follow the factory-reset steps in that model’s owner’s manual.
  4. Confirm that personal data and settings are gone.
  5. Leave the watch at its initial setup state.

Garmin recommends a factory reset before transferring ownership and directs owners to the relevant manual for exact steps. Backup-and-restore features are available only on select models and may preserve settings such as watch faces, alarms, apps, activity settings, timers, or paired sensors. They do not establish that every model backs up the same information. See Garmin’s ownership-transfer guidance and backup documentation.

After the reset: verify that it is ready

The watch should display an initial setup, welcome, or pairing screen. It should not show the former owner’s name, passcode, Home screen, notifications, photos, or personal settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a sale or gift, perform the setup test far enough to confirm that no previous-owner credentials are requested. An Apple Watch asking for the old Apple Account password still has Activation Lock enabled. Similar account or anti-theft prompts on other platforms require the former owner to remove the device from the relevant account.

Also verify that:

  • The cellular plan has been removed and separately canceled with the carrier.
  • The eSIM has been erased where the model requires it.
  • Payment cards and passes are absent.
  • The watch is no longer listed in the old companion app.
  • The recipient can pair it independently.

Troubleshooting common failures

The watch still asks for the previous owner’s credentials

This is an account lock, not necessarily a failed reset. The previous owner must remove the watch from the relevant account. Do not ship or accept a watch that cannot pass this setup test.

The watch will not pair after resetting

  1. Restart both watch and phone.
  2. Update the phone and companion app.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off and on.
  4. Forget the watch in Bluetooth settings.
  5. Remove it from the companion app.
  6. Confirm it is not still paired with another phone.
  7. Reset again only if the official troubleshooting instructions call for it.
  8. Reinstall the companion app if recommended.

You reset before syncing

Recent activity stored only on the watch may be unrecoverable. Fitbit explicitly warns that unsynchronized data can be deleted during reset or account removal.

You have no phone

Apple allows direct erasure from the watch, but Activation Lock must then be removed separately through Find My. For Samsung, Wear OS, Fitbit, and Garmin, use the model’s on-watch reset or manufacturer account workflow; do not assume every platform supports remote erasure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reset option is missing

Check the manufacturer’s support page or exact owner’s manual. Wear OS menus vary by version and manufacturer, and Garmin, Fitbit, and Samsung paths can differ by product family.

The watch has a swollen or damaged battery

Do not charge, package, or mail a watch that is swollen, hot, leaking, or visibly damaged. Contact the manufacturer, carrier, retailer, or local electronics-hazardous-waste program instead of sending it through an ordinary trade-in process.

The watch belongs to an employer or school

A reset may not remove organizational enrollment. Ask the administrator to release the device before transferring it.

For selling, gifting, trading in, or recycling

Keep a record of the serial number, condition, reset completion, and shipment or trade-in confirmation. Remove the watch’s cellular plan and eSIM where applicable, but do not remove physical accessories unless the recipient or program requests them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Trade In is appropriate for owners seeking Apple credit or an Apple Gift Card; valuation depends on the serial number, model, and condition: Apple Trade In. Samsung’s trade-in value and eligibility depend on model, condition, and promotion: Samsung’s trade-in FAQ. Google’s return-preparation workflow is for returns and replacements rather than a permanent resale-price list: Google Store preparation guidance.

Avoid paid “data-wiping” utilities. The built-in manufacturer reset and account-removal procedures are the authoritative consumer route. If the charger is missing, buy a model-specific replacement rather than assuming a supposedly universal smartwatch charger will work.

FAQ

Does a factory reset delete my health data?

It can delete health data stored only on the watch, especially data that has not synced. It does not necessarily delete history already stored in the companion app or cloud account.

Does resetting remove the watch from my account?

Not always. Apple’s direct on-watch erase does not remove Activation Lock, and other platforms may require separate account removal. Unpair or remove the watch through the official app when transferring ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to cancel cellular service?

Yes, if the watch has a cellular plan you no longer need. Removing a plan from the watch and canceling the carrier subscription are separate steps.

Can I recover data after resetting?

Only data preserved in a backup or already synchronized may be recoverable. Unsynced local data can be permanently lost.

Should I remove the watch from Bluetooth separately?

When pairing is stuck, forget it in Bluetooth settings as well as in the companion app. For an ownership transfer, the more important steps are unpairing, account removal, and disabling any ownership lock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a factory reset fix pairing problems?

It can fix persistent pairing problems, but try restarting, updating, and forgetting the Bluetooth connection first. Reset only after syncing any data you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know a used smartwatch is ready for me?

It should show the initial setup or pairing screen and must not request the previous owner’s passcode or account password.

Do I need to erase the eSIM?

If the watch uses an eSIM and is being transferred, erase it when the manufacturer’s instructions require it. Canceling the cellular service is a separate step.
