OutdoorGearLab and Travel + Leisure both name the Outdoor Research Ferrosi their overall pick, while REI Co-op Trailmade is a strong value alternative. For colder weather, changing temperatures, leggings comfort, or rough terrain, other models may suit better. The nine options below bring together category recommendations from separate 2026 reviews—not a single head-to-head test.
How to choose hiking pants for your conditions
Start with the conditions and movement you expect, then weigh comfort, mobility, breathability, durability, features, versatility, fit, and weather resistance. A lighter, more breathable pair can make sense in warm conditions; a more durable or weather-resistant option may be preferable on rough trails or in cooler, wetter weather. Those are trade-offs, not guarantees of performance.

- For general hiking: Look for comfortable movement and enough breathability for your usual pace and climate.
- For variable weather: Consider wind and light-rain resistance, while remembering that water-resistant hiking pants are not necessarily waterproof.
- For changing temperatures: Convertible pants offer a way to adjust coverage and ventilation without changing trousers.
- For all-day wear: Check fit, waistband comfort, and pocket placement alongside fabric performance.
Nine women’s hiking pants to consider
These picks reflect different categories in three publications’ 2026 guides. Each source evaluated its own selection, so the list is a use-case guide, not a shared ranking.

OutdoorGearLab highlights the Ferrosi’s stretch, mobility, breathability, light weight, and versatility; Travel + Leisure also selects it as its best overall. It is a sensible starting point for hikers looking for one pair for varied outdoor use. OutdoorGearLab notes UPF 50+ for this model in its explanatory text; that is a clothing rating, not a guarantee against sun injury.

OutdoorGearLab names the Trailmade its value pick, and CleverHiker calls it a budget pick. Travel + Leisure selects it as best lightweight. Those category labels make it worth comparing if price or a lighter feel is a priority, but the reviews do not establish a live price or guarantee current availability.

3. Best hiking leggings: Stio Glide Tech
OutdoorGearLab recommends the Glide Tech in its hiking-leggings category. A legging-style fit may appeal to hikers who prefer close-fitting stretch over a traditional trouser cut. 4. Best year-round option: Arc’teryx Gamma Pant
OutdoorGearLab recommends the Gamma for year-round hiking, and CleverHiker also names it overall. OutdoorGearLab says it resists wind and repels light rain, but is not fully waterproof. Choose it for those stated weather characteristics, not as a substitute for rain pants in sustained rain.

5. Best work-to-trail pick: prAna Halle Straight Pants II
OutdoorGearLab places the Halle Straight Pants II in its work-to-trail category. That makes this model a candidate for someone who wants a hiking pant with a more everyday role as well. 7. Best winter pick: Arc’teryx Kyanite

8. Best for heavy-duty use: Fjällräven Keb Curved
OutdoorGearLab’s heavy-duty category points to the Keb Curved. It is an option to investigate if durability on demanding terrain matters more than choosing a lightweight pair. Check the current product specification and fit for your needs rather than assuming a category award guarantees a particular level of protection.

9. Another category alternative: KUHL Freeflex Roll-Up
CleverHiker includes the Freeflex Roll-Up among its category picks. It adds a separate publisher’s option to the list, but the available category summary does not establish a single best use for it here. Compare its current features, fit, and intended use with the other candidates before deciding.

The recommendations come from separate editorial testing programs, not one combined test. OutdoorGearLab says it tested 18 women’s hiking pants for its 2026 guide and has bought and tested more than 50 pairs since 2012, hiking hundreds of miles in varied conditions. Its page was updated May 14, 2026.

CleverHiker says it researched more than 40 women’s hiking pants and tested 13 pairs on 13 backpacking trips across 11 wilderness areas in the Southwest. It describes months of evaluation covering comfort, mobility, durability, features, and weather resistance; its guide was updated April 2, 2026.
Travel + Leisure says it tested 38 pairs and updated its guide September 25, 2026. These counts describe each publisher’s reported review process. They are not market-wide statistics, and they should not be added together or presented as a single shared comparison.
Quick Recap
Check the current model before you buy
- Confirm the exact model name and version; product details can change.
- Check current price, size range, and stock with the retailer. Prices in review guides are publication-time references, not verified live offers.
- Use the retailer’s current size guidance and return policy to assess fit; a review cannot predict fit on an individual body.
- Match weather claims to the conditions you expect. In particular, the Gamma’s stated light-rain resistance does not make it waterproof.
