Wooden dials deserve a renewed place in watch design, and the argument rests on two things: the visual individuality that natural wood provides, and a craft problem that makers have worked through in practice. What the evidence does not show is a measurable market revival. Sales and adoption figures for wood-dial watches were not found in the sources available for this article, so the case for a comeback is a case about design and making, not about demand.
Start with the right question: which part is wood?
“Wooden watch” is a loose term. A brand may use wood for the case, the dial, the strap or bracelet links, or for accents, and the answer changes from model to model. Before you weigh any claim about durability, water resistance or care, confirm which component is wood.
JORD’s Meridian, for example, is described by the brand as a reinforced wood case. That description does not establish that the dial is wood. Reading a product page for “wood” and assuming the dial is wood is the most common way buyers end up with the wrong expectations.
Why no two wood dials look the same
The strongest case for wooden dials is visual. Grain, figure and colour are not printed onto the surface in a repeatable pattern; they come from the material itself. Two dials cut from the same species can differ noticeably, and that variation is the point.

Bettél describes this directly. The brand says most of its dials are made from white beech or American walnut, and that each dial carries its own colour and grain. Its case wood, Kiaat, is a separate material from the dial wood, which is a useful distinction to keep in mind when reading any maker’s copy.
Lisa Wong, a dial maker profiled by the American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) in a May 2017 feature, takes the same idea further. Her website, as quoted in that feature, says: “Our dials use mixed materials. We don’t print pictures and numbers on the dials like other manufacturers, we combine materials such as brass, wood, and shell to create faces, colors, and looks.” The wording is attributed to her website and reproduced by the AWCI; it is not presented as a direct interview quotation.
The engineering problem: wood moves
Wood responds to humidity and temperature by expanding and contracting. Inside a watch, that movement is a real design constraint, because a dial that changes shape can warp, crack or lift from its mounting. Any honest discussion of wood dials has to start here.

One documented approach: brass-backed veneer
In the AWCI feature, Wong describes her method. She sources veneer, stains and finishes it, sands it to thickness, and lays it over an electroplated brass base. Her early experiments showed that a brass plate beneath the wood helped address the wood’s movement within the watch.

Other makers may stabilise wood differently, and the feature does not describe a standard that every wood dial must meet. It is still a useful example of how hybrid construction works: the wood provides the visible surface, and a metal layer provides the stable structure underneath.
How long the problem took to solve
Wong told the AWCI that resolving the movement problem took a couple of years of experimentation. That is her own reported timeline, not an industry statistic. It does suggest that a wood dial that looks simple on the wrist usually reflects a considerable amount of trial and error behind it.

How current makers use wood
Bettél: artisan production in Cape Town
Bettél says its watches are made in a workshop in Muizenberg, Cape Town, and that most dials are white beech or American walnut. Because the brand is a small-scale artisan producer, the practical questions for buyers are the ones that matter most with any niche watch: how the dial is finished, how the watch is serviced, and what support exists when a part fails. The brand’s materials statements answer the first question; its pages do not, in the sources available here, state a water rating or warranty term.
Patek Philippe’s 2021 desk clock: a historical parallel
Patek Philippe’s magazine describes its 2021 Only Watch piece, a desk clock inspired by a 1923 Packard desk clock. American walnut appears there as veneer on the case, not as a wooden dial. The piece is useful as context for wood’s place in horological design, but it is not evidence of a lineage of wooden wristwatch dials.

Thierry Stern, the company’s president, said of the piece: “It’s very interesting to be in the early 2020s and to bring out a piece that in a sense is completely out of its time, because this is not something that people expect today.”

Water resistance, care and durability depend on the model
Care guidance is brand-specific, and no general rule covers all wood dials. Two brands give clear but different instructions:
- HAVU says its watches tolerate normal splashes. Its FAQ gives model-dependent ratings of 3 ATM or 5 ATM, and advises against submerging the watch or showering with it, regardless of rating.
- WoodWatch says its watches should not be showered or swum in. The brand describes using its own branded natural-material wax for care.
The practical rule is to read the specific watch’s manual and warranty before exposing it to water. A rating printed on one model does not carry over to another, and a wax recommendation is a maker’s care instruction, not a waterproofing claim.

Wood is often presented as the greener choice, but the evidence available here does not support a blanket verdict. WoodWatch describes its materials as natural and sustainably sourced. Its story page says the company has planted “more than 575,000 trees so far.” That figure is company-reported, the page does not display a publication year, and it should be attributed to WoodWatch and dated as accessed in 2026. It is not an independent count.

No comparative lifecycle assessment, independent chain-of-custody verification or substantiated emissions comparison against metal or other dial materials was identified. The questions a buyer can actually check are the ones that determine real impact: the species and its source, the finish, how the piece is manufactured, whether it can be repaired, and how long it is likely to last in use.
Comparing wood-dial watches
The table below records only what each brand states. “Not stated” means the brand’s statements on the points consulted did not address the item, not that the feature is absent.
| Brand | Wood position stated | Water guidance (brand statement) | Warranty | Sustainability language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bettél | Dial: white beech or American walnut. Case: Kiaat | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| WoodWatch | Natural wood materials; specific wood component not established here | Should not be showered or swum in | Two years | Natural, sustainably sourced materials; company-reported tree planting |
| HAVU | Not stated | Model-dependent 3 ATM or 5 ATM; advises against submersion or showering | Not stated | Not stated |
| JORD (Meridian) | Reinforced wood case; dial material not established | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
When comparing two watches, or a wood dial against a conventional one, work through these points in order:
- The exact wood component: dial, case, bracelet or accents.
- Dial construction and finish, including whether the wood is a veneer and what sits beneath it.
- Legibility, markers, hands and glare under ordinary viewing conditions.
- Movement type and the maintenance it requires.
- The water-resistance rating and the maker’s use guidance, read together.
- Repair availability, warranty terms and replacement-part support.
- The evidence behind any sourcing or environmental claim.
No comparative tests of legibility, durability or environmental impact were conducted for this article. Do not accept a claim that one dial material is more durable, more readable or more sustainable than another unless the maker supplies product-specific evidence.
What the evidence does not establish
Three gaps matter for anyone deciding whether wood dials are worth buying. First, no independent market-size, sales or adoption statistic for wooden watch dials was identified, so claims of a resurgence cannot be quantified. Second, no published comparison of wear, legibility or lifespan between wood and other dial materials was found. Third, the brand-reported figures cited here, including the tree-planting total, are company statements and should be presented as such.
Within those limits, the case for wood dials is strong on design and reasonable on craft: the grain is individual, the construction problems have documented solutions, and makers are working with the material in deliberate ways. The case is weaker on proof, and a careful buyer should treat it that way.
