Verdict: The Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph is compelling if you want a substantial, space-associated chronograph with a clear place in Fortis’s history. Its strongest case is the combination of B-42 design and documented brand connection to the Russian space program—not a proven claim that every version flew on every mission. Treat the older watch as a reference-specific collector purchase: confirm the exact model, movement, condition and service history before buying.
Why the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph attracts attention
The appeal comes from three things that overlap but should not be confused: a purposeful chronograph design, Fortis’s space-watch story, and the interest of a recognizable B-42 reference. Whether it is worth buying depends on which matters most to you.

- For the design: The B-42 name and chronograph layout give the watch a distinctive, instrument-like identity. Judge the actual example on your wrist; the available sources do not establish dimensions or fit for every reference and production period.
- For the function: A chronograph adds elapsed-time measurement, but exact subdials and other functions depend on the reference. Do not assume that every Official Cosmonauts watch has the same movement or displays.
- For the heritage: Fortis’s own manual calls the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph the official watch of the Russian space program since 1994. That is a brand statement, not an independent space-agency endorsement or proof about every reference and mission.
- For collecting: The B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph reference 638.10.11 is specifically identified in Fortis’s 100 Years book. A correct reference, original configuration and sound service history matter more than a broad label in a sales listing.
What the space-watch connection establishes—and what it does not
Fortis says it was founded in Grenchen, Switzerland, in 1912, and its official history presents the 1990s as the beginning of its space-watch chapter. Its instruction manual makes the specific claim that the Official Cosmonauts Chronograph has been the official watch of the Russian space program since 1994. Attribute that wording to Fortis.
There is a more specific visual record for the 638.10.11: Fortis’s 100 Years book identifies it as the B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph and depicts the chronograph in weightlessness in the ISS Cupola. That supports a documented connection in Fortis’s own material; it does not, by itself, establish that all watches in the family were used in space or that the Russian-program claim applies to every later mission.

For a buyer, the distinction is useful. If you want a watch with a brand-documented space association, the story is part of the appeal. If you require independent mission-by-mission evidence or agency confirmation, the cited brand material does not supply that.
How to identify the B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph
Reference 638.10.11 is the identifier Fortis’s book gives for the B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph. Do not treat “Official Cosmonauts” alone as enough to establish that a listing is for this chronograph: the family also includes day-date and Chronograph Alarm models, and Fortis’s materials distinguish configurations.
A Fortis-branded product listing hosted on Wix describes a chronograph, hour and minute displays, small seconds, 12-hour and 30-minute counters, and day/date, as well as bracelet and strap choices. Because it is on a third-party subdomain and model details can vary, use it as corroboration rather than a definitive specification for every 638.10.11. The listing displays CHF 3,150, but that is a listing snapshot, not a dependable current price or market valuation.
Fortis’s manual also discusses the F-2012 caliber’s separate power-reserve indications, UTC/GMT second time zone and AM/PM display. Those are caliber-specific details; do not attribute them to every Official Cosmonauts Chronograph without verifying the movement in the exact watch.
Older B-42 or current Novonaut?
The Novonaut is a distinct modern collection, not simply a renamed B-42. Fortis’s history says it launched in 2023, built on Official Cosmonauts DNA but re-engineered. The current Novonaut collection page lists Werk 17 and a 60-hour power reserve for that movement.
| Question | B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph | Novonaut |
|---|---|---|
| Generation and identity | Legacy Official Cosmonauts model; Fortis’s 100 Years book identifies reference 638.10.11. | Distinct current collection; Fortis says it launched in 2023 as a re-engineered successor built on Official Cosmonauts DNA. |
| Movement information | Verify the exact watch’s movement from its documentation; the available material does not establish movement details for every B-42 variant. | Current Fortis collection page lists Werk 17 and a 60-hour power reserve. |
| Price information | A Fortis-branded Wix listing displayed CHF 3,150 at retrieval; this is not a verified current price or market valuation. | Fortis’s collection page displayed variant prices of CHF 4,700, CHF 4,900, CHF 5,150 and CHF 5,500 when retrieved; prices and availability can change. |
| Best reason to choose it | The historic B-42 identity and the particular condition or configuration of an individual pre-owned example. | A current Fortis implementation with the modern collection’s listed specifications and retailer support to verify at purchase. |
The comparison is intentionally limited: available Fortis material does not establish a complete, reference-by-reference specification set for all B-42 versions. Compare the exact watch and exact Novonaut variant rather than filling gaps by inference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before buying a 638.10.11
- Match the reference. Ask for clear photographs of the watch and its reference documentation. Confirm that the seller means the B-42 Official Cosmonauts Chronograph, not a day-date or Chronograph Alarm model.
- Verify movement and functions. Request the movement caliber and documentation for the particular example. Check its chronograph counters and calendar against the reference-specific description; do not infer F-2012 functions from the family name.
- Assess condition and service. Request service records, details of chronograph operation, and photographs showing wear or damage. A listing’s description is not a substitute for a documented service history or an independent inspection.
- Check originality and configuration. Confirm whether the bracelet or strap is included and whether it is the configuration you want. The Fortis-branded listing mentions both bracelet and strap choices, but that does not establish what accompanies a particular pre-owned watch.
- Compare the actual transaction terms. Check the seller’s return policy, warranty, availability and final price. No current inventory or independent market-wide valuation for the legacy reference is established here, so do not use the Wix listing as a benchmark.
So, is the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph worth buying?
It is worth pursuing if you want the older B-42’s identity and appreciate a chronograph with a space connection stated in Fortis’s own materials. It is a less straightforward choice if you mainly want the newest Fortis execution, a specific set of functions, or a purchase supported by current product availability: compare it with the distinct Novonaut and verify its current details directly.
The decisive question is not whether “Official Cosmonauts” sounds persuasive, but whether the individual watch is the right reference, in the right condition, with the movement and configuration you expect. Buy the evidence attached to the watch as carefully as you buy its story.
